Kevin Klein, who was an integral piece of the Rangers’ run to the 2014 Stanley Cup final and the club’s 2014-15 Presidents’ Trophy season before breaking down last year, is contemplating retirement from the NHL, The Post has learned.

Sources report Klein, who was a healthy scratch for all but one playoff game following a regular season in which persistent lower back issues limited him to 60 games, is leaning toward leaving the NHL and continuing his career in Europe.

Individuals with knowledge of the situation stressed that a final decision has not been made even as the 32-year-old righty defenseman held a going-away party over the weekend.

Klein, who has been working out at the Blueshirts’ practice facility, has one year at $2.75 million remaining on his contract with an accompanying $2.9 million cap hit. If he does indeed retire from the NHL, the Rangers would thus gain an additional $2.9 million of 2017-18 space.
solid career

but Im rooting for him to retire. Give him the Marty Biron retirement package (ie. make him whole with a cushy gig at MSG).
Excellent

This stuff seems shady, but as long as Gorton/Sather dont come out and admit the shady like Lou did a few years back - i'm fully supportive.

Still need to figure out this similar solution for G/Staal though, damnit.
Girardi is a guy would I could really see taking the

Biron retirement after next season, if not bought out.

Key thing to note here is that KK is (potentially) doing this after not playing in the playoffs. You're not going to convince Girardi to hang them up when he's on the ice with 2 minutes to go in a tie game.
Re the Biron package

Brooks does mention Klein wants to continue to play in Europe.
Thanks for your service KK

and looking back we can say the trade was a good one. That said, his play had fallen precipitously, and he and the organization were at a crossroads. I wish him luck in whatever he decides to do.
