OK, JB and Paul Blake, and others...gidie sent me the original threads (including the Joe Pesci meme), both of which I have cut and pasted here...let the Maui discussion resume...


Maui for Honeymoon- Anyone with Tips/Advice?

So I'm getting hitched in a a few months and we are looking to go to Hawaii for the honeymoon for about 10 days (I preferred to go to Europe, as if my opinion mattered). We are using a travel agent who is a friend of the family but I wanted to hear what some of you guys have to say.

She recommends the Andaz Maui since she believes it's a beautiful 5 start resort but all I see is the $530 a night price tag. I was looking at the Hyatt Regency as well which is still a 4 star place at about $100 a night less. She mentioned that she may be able to get me in at a more favorable rate at the Andaz so maybe the difference could be closer to $50-$60 a night.

Now, she also mentions that breakfast is not included at the Hyatt and you just cannot compare the level of service and amenities. I'm fine paying up for a great trip but my fiance and I aren't high maintenance people and can't imagine we would be displeased with a 4 star resort on Maui. I'd be happy sleeping face down on the beach as long as I'm 10 drinks deep, which I plan to be.

Has anyone stayed at either of these places or anywhere else on Maui? We are heading over to the big island after 7 days on Maui to go on some volcano hikes and whatnot. Should be a great trip but interested to hear people's thoughts.

You won't be disappointed. Been lucky enough to have been back to Maui several times over the years. Andaz is a newer property in the Wailea area and very nice. Wailea is a great area with many hotel options. My personal favorite is the Four Seasons. Just an unbelievable experience. Depending on when you're going, the rates may not be much more than the Andaz. If you're okay going to a 4 star, I would recommend the Marriott Wailea. It's next door to the Andaz and a great facility. I believe it was recently remodeled as I've been looking into booking a stay there later this year.

we did 7 days there and then 3 on Oahu.

Stayed at the Sheraton at Kaana'paali. Got 3 nights free when we booked. Breakfast wasn't included in my deal and I recall it being pretty expensive at the resort.

We did a helicopter tour, a whale watching trip out of Lahaina (it was Feb so the middle of whale season). Otherwise we just hung out at the beach/pool or drove around sight seeing.

I can give you some great spots to scout. Been there 4 times.. and spent some decent time on island.

You can get Apartments with their own private beach access for those prices. If you want more of an all inclusive though, I'm not the best guide for that. I stayed at the Marriot on Kaanapali, but haven't done anything else and the experience with the exception of the beach wasn't anything compared to the more local feel. I'd go the Air b n' b route on either Lahaina-side or Kihei-side.

Last time I went to AirBnB (or the other site which I forget now) and rented a 3 bedroom in the Kaanapali Alii condo. It was great, right on the beach newar Whalers Village, and ended up cheaper than the neighboring hotels (like Marriott). If you want a hotel I prefer the Hyatt Regency. The lobby is like a tropical forest, and they have some excellent facilities such as the Swan Court dining room on the pool, grotto bar in the pool, and numerous other beach and poolside restaurants.

it was the greatest trip of life, you won't be disappointed. I can't recommend the four seasons enough, it's all you need in life.

Rent a car (wrangler, open top), do the road to hana, go snorkeling if that's up your alley. All the outdoorsy stuff is fun; but so is sitting by the pool/beach, getting drunk and consummating those nuptials early and often. Enjoy.

and stayed at the Four Seasons and it was beyond anything I have ever experienced. I have friends who stayed at the Andaz and the pictures looked beautiful as well.

My only regret was that we were so active on Maui, that we almost didn't get a chance to take advantage of the pampering at the Four Seasons as much as we could have.

So keep that in mind-- if your plan is to spend most days exploring all that Maui has to offer, driving around the island, you won't be at the hotel as much as you think.

Whatever you do, make a reservation NOW for dinner at Mama's Fish House for sunset and mention it's your honeymoon and see if you can get a table with the best view. It was absolutely breathtaking.

... I won an all expense trip through work and spent the week at the grand Wailea resort... place was amazing... the only part of the trip that wasn't pleasant was the flights there... if your flying in from the east coast I would advise a layover in Denver or cali... I went from Hartford to Dallas and the flight from Dallas was a total bear and that alone would make me not want to go again.

Its been several years since we were there last but consider 2 points (updates welcome)

1. Do NOT book excursions days in advance ... go to Lahaina early the day of and most prices should be at least 50% lower than normal.

2. Do NOT take the 'road' around the northwest side of the island ... (which looks like a shortcut from the airport to Kaanapali) it's 1 lane at times and fairly treacherous ... for us, it was white knuckle the whole way.

You also might consider the 7 day 5 island round trip cruise from Maui. ENJOY

first, though, for the OP...definitely get a reservation for dinner at Mama's Fish House...expensive but well worth the ambience, food and view...perfect for a honeymoon trip....my wife and I were there about 5 years ago...

I disagree with the negative comment about the Road to Hana...I agree it is a narrow road and all but I thought it was worth the effort to do it...our problem was the lack of parking at some of the places we wanted to stop along the road...

now for my questions...we are going back for two weeks later this year...thought about doing one in Maui and one in Kauai but decided not to...I am thinking about dividing our time on Maui between two resorts, one in the north and one in the south...

north would be the Honua Kai in the north and the other would be the Grand Wailea in the south...anyone have any experiences at either one?

Sit thru one for an hour and they will give u a villa (studio) probably for around 2.5k for the week (or less)
Never found it to be any high pressure annoying sales pitch either

did you go to Kauai the last time you were there? I split my honeymoon between Maui and Kauai and I'm very glad I did. Kauai was absolutely beautiful and a nice change of pace.

Also, if you want to get away from it all, I'd rec staying at the Hotel Hana Maui, which is at the end of the famous "road to Hana." It's beautiful and completely removed from everything, at least it was nearly 10 years ago.

Spider wasn't talking about the road to Hana, he was talking about the other road from the airport to Kaanapaali that hits the NW corner of the island.

stayed at kaanapali, Sheraton, right on black rock - great snorkeling.

agree with most of the comments.

We did the road to Hana, but we did that on a small tour van. It was great because the guide was extremely knowledgeable and described everything really well, some people used to buy a CD they'd put in their car and it would narrate the drive as you went. Glad I did it wouldn't do it again.

We did haleakula (the volcano for sunrise). it was freezing, but worth it. Glad I did it, wouldn't do it again.

Spent a lot of time in Lahaina, did one snorkel cruise out to Molokini. Great snorkeling tons of fish, some barracudas, even a shark and some giant sea tutrles. I'd do it again. Booked morning of - as someone else suggested and it was much cheaper, nice barbecue lunch with all you can drink mai tai's and rum punch plus beers.

went parasailing out of lahaina. Fun, thought it would be more exhilarating, once you get up in the air it's eerily peaceful, but no thrill rush. Glad I did it, wouldn't do it again unless it was cheap.

I also recommend the Hula Grill, in lahaina (I believe), great food, great views, they make this hula grill sauce I brought home with me and put it on everything. like a sriracha but sweeter.

On the big island I recommend the Hawaiian Style Cafe. I think there is one in Kona and one in Hilo. I got some kind of barbecue beef that was incredible and for some reason they serve pancakes with everything.

as is the Four Seasons. Wailea is the 'latest and greatest' development in Maui, just as Kaanapali was in the 80s and Kapalua in the 90s. Kaanapali is more family-oriented so it might not be exactly what you're looking for in terms of a sumptuous honeymoon experience. I love the Hyatt Regency Maui, though, for sentimental reasons. One of my favorite hotels in the world.

Consider the Ritz Carlton Kapalua, too.

we did our first 5 nights there then did the next 5 nights at the Four Seasons in South Maui (Wailea). Whatever you do, stay in the more expensive place last if you split your trip up. The Hyatt was awesome but the Four Seasons was spectacular.

...but the first week of May I was at the Grand Wailea Resort in Maui and it was amazing. In case you missed my first post though if you are going to have a layover avoid Dallas. Having a layover in cali or Denver is much better

When we were in Maui about 5 years ago, I asked tons of locals about Mamas Fish House. Not one recommended it. From what I know from talking to people back home or reading here,it is very good with a great view and very expensive which is what locals told me. I'm always looking for something different so we went where the locals went and there are all over the place.

The 2nd place I would take issue is the Road to Hana. It's a whole day affair. If you have time to kill, that's one thing. It's a long slow winding drive. At many of the stops that you'd want to make, you will either not find parking or you'll have to wait for parking and this happened way too happen. If I had to do it again, I'd pass on the drive. The passenger will get to see stuff but the driver will have a nerve racking day. There are so many nice things to do in Maui.

As an aside, and this may not apply to you in any way, we visited 4 islands. Kauai was my favorite followed by Maui. My wife had Maui first and then Kauai

I went 4 years ago. Newark to San Fran, 45 min layover, Maui 4.5 hours later.
Mama's, Gannon's, and Maui Executive Chef table were my favorites.
Mill House is also good food.
Road to Hana, meh
great advice from locals.
Uncle Charley's in Paia, real good breakfast.

during whale season, it was pretty amazing just sitting and watching them breach over and over. It's like the Pacific Life logo. We also went scuba diving and saw some pretty amazing stuff like giant sea turtles. I had never gone scuba diving before (or since actually) but there was a free lesson offered in the hotel pool and afterward you could pay to go out for real.

Its a condo building on Kaanapali Beach right in the middle of things. Great location and condo's. Same price or less than the neighboring hotels and you get a condo, not a room. Plus you can still go to any hotel restaurant if you want.
