NFT: Baseball fans: Bang the Drum Slowly

Below is the link to the 52-minute stage production for TV starring a very young Paul Newman.

I was reminded of it when DennyDenville pointed out on another thread that Aaron Judge and Rob Refsnyder are best friends. For those unfamiliar with the play (which was adapted from the novel by Mark Harris and later turned into a movie starring Robert DeNiro and Michael Moriarity), it's about a catcher and pitcher who are road roommates and the friendship they forge under bittersweet circumstances.

Here's the plot summary from Wikipedia...
Quote:
Harris's narrator Henry "Author" Wiggen, a star pitcher, tells the story of a baseball season with the New York Mammoths, a fictional team based on the New York Giants, as noted in the author's book Diamond: The Baseball Writings of Mark Harris. In the novel, Wiggen befriends a slow-talking catcher from Georgia named Bruce Pearson who is more ridiculed than respected by his teammates. When Pearson learns he is terminally ill with Hodgkin’s disease and is to be sent to the minor leagues, Wiggen rallies his teammates to keep the catcher among them and inspires Pearson to become a better player before his time runs out.

young Deniro, right? The movie is a low-budget, sentimental yawner that gives very little evidence of Deniro's nascent talent. Mean Streets was an intimation of that. Michael Moriarity , who always seems bored and laconic in any role, seems particularly so as his caring teammate.

No, I mean the young Paul Newman. Click on the link in the OP.
Thanks, Milton.

I enjoyed it, and unlike Retro, I also enjoyed the movie.
