QB Davis Webb going to extremes to learn Giants offense

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Everyone from the New York Giants that talked about quarterback Davis Webb immediately after he was selected in the third round of the NFL draft seemed to mention that he was the son of a coach. At the time, it seemed like a notable point that was being somewhat overstated in the sales pitch.

Maybe they were onto something though. If the Giants were insinuating that Webb takes the game seriously, it makes sense now that it can be put into context.

Webb takes diligence to unique levels. He isn’t just going through the motions trying to learn the Giants offense. He’s not simply working hard either. He seems to be doing everything possible, including coming to work every day during OTAs and minicamp with personalized questions for each coach and quarterback.

“I have a ton of questions. I write them out every day,” Webb said after the Giants concluded minicamp Thursday. “I have Eli [Manning] questions, Coach [Mike] Sullivan questions, Coach [Frank] Cignetti questions, Josh [Johnson] and Geno [Smith] questions. You have it all different. They’ve all been responsive. I’m just thankful and blessed to have that type of room around me. Some guys don’t have that.”

we'll see how that translates to the field but

Actually, as a back-up, one of the fundamental responsibilities is to know the offense and be able to assist in the class room, sideline and scout teams. So basically not blah, blah, blah but a primary part of his job to get to know the offense.

Actually, the article talks about how hard the offense is to master, and how Eli looked BAD in practice often his first year in the system.

So after reading the article, sounds like there's a lot more to it than just blah blah blah it's practice. IMO
I don't even understand the "blah blah"

or "prove it on the field" posts. It's the offseason, why even post on the board just to say that? Hearing good reports about our rookies makes for a nice read and it's great to hear that Webb is going above and beyond to try and get better. But yeah, who cares...
I feel pretty comfortable in predicting
djm : 6/18/2017 12:31 pm : link
That Webb will start at least 20 games for this franchise. Whether he's a good or great long term qb remains to be seen but he's going to get a shot here. The mere fact that he's got talent and works hard bodes well. Giants are loyal to kids like Webb.

It's anything but bla bla bla. When was the last time we heard any positive press for a giants qb not named Eli manning? I'd say it was 1999 when Kerry Collins was displaying NFL caliber ability in practice.

It's always a good thing to see young players getting talked up like this, especially a qb. They don't always pan out but this bodes well. Like I said, I think he's going to start for the giants at some point. Whether he holds the job and displays staying power is another story.
In a related story, backup QBs Geno Smith and Josh Johnson

Watch out for this kid.
BigBlueWhale : 6/18/2017 2:08 pm : link
He throws lasers and he wants it bad. Giants were extremely fortunate to land this kid in 3.

Why was he still there?

Looks like all the teams needing a QB pulled the trigger early - Bears (Trubisky), Chiefs (Mahomes), Texans (Watson). Understandable. As a ND fan, I think the Browns f#cked up really bad taking Kizer over Webb in the 2nd. After looking like they were in "wait until next year" mode after passing on a QB in round 1, they take Kizer in round 2? What's the logic there? Very stupid move. And they took the wrong guy.

And then the 2 other teams who should've been looking QB - the 49ers and Jets - pass on him twice, to take LB Rueben Foster, S Marcus Maye, CB Ahkello Witherspoon and WR ArDarius Stewart. Nice adds - but when you need a young QB and Webb is sitting there? This could be twice the 49ers have passed up on a big time QB playing right under their noses when they really needed one.

Maybe I'm wearing my blue tinted glasses but these are the types of idiotic moves we needed to land a QB prospect of this calibre in the 3rd.
Smart kid

He must realize that he has a real opportunity in front of him, one that Ryan Nassib never legitimately had, which is a chance to earn his way towards becoming a franchise qb.

Certain teams like certain type of players. I mean look at all the teams who drafted a QB before Marino in '83? Webb could have went in Rd 1 or Rd 2, he was a steal for us at the end of Rd 3.

Evidence that the Browns made a mistake? Kizer has been impressing while sharing first string snaps, at first string pace, in Cleveland.

As for Giant QBs that have impressed and gotten good press/fan push, there's some clear selective memory going on by a couple posters in this thread. It won't take much work to dig up old Nassib articles or BBI posts. Just root for Webb to work out; you don't need to go overboard with the in the moment homerism.

No, claiming no QB on the Giants over than Eli has gotten any "impressed" hype since 1999 and that it means he's going to start 20 games here and that other teams were clearly wrong because their "impressive" rookies can't possibly be as good a Giant one does.

Uconn didn't say some of that I did. And I never said other teams were clearly wrong based on anything.

Hey this is fun I'm gonna take all the comments on one thread and attribute them to one specific poster!

All I said was its rare to see a young giants qb get this kind of positive praise this early on. I don't remember seeing nassib or any other young qb get talked up this early. And I think, stay with me here, that based on webb's physical talents, work ethic, timing of his arrival here and the giants penchant for trusting the process that Webb will be given a chance to start once Eli is done. Don't like it? Tough shit! It's my prediction and I'm sticking with it.
And really
djm : 6/18/2017 5:09 pm : link
Is it so hard to fathom that Webb will be given a shot to be the man here in a few years?? And if he's given a shot the giants aren't likely to ditch him after 4-6 games. They will likely give the guy 1-2 seasons before pulling the plug.

Shame on me for thinking this way. What do I know.. I've only been following this team's every move for 35 years now.

Well, there's no negative difference between what Eli was as a prospect and Webb... oh wait, that was the Nassib hype.

djm: The other teams being so wrong was about another poster. My comment wasn't just about you.

For the record, I hope Webb is such a monster success they can cut Eli after this season and start him next. Hope isn't always likely nor does it require revising the past to gas it up more though.
Anyone think it's possible he becomes the primary backup

can't take the information for what it is and leave it at that. The rookie is working hard and so far impressing in camp. Signs of optimism!

But there are the fans that have to read that as "Yes! We landed the next Tom Brady! Other teams are fools for passing on him!"

And then there are the "wake me when he does it in the Superbowl" crowd who couldn't care less if the guy is working hard and looking good, or not showing up to camp since everything that happens in camp is completely meaningless.

There is no reason anyone needs to draw any conclusions about this kid anytime soon. That is to come later. Just enjoy that the first signs are positive.

it's as if people can't see the positives in Webb because they feel it's being disloyal to Eli

you root for the uniform - and Eli will not be wearing it for that much longer. Webb certainly has the talent/work ethic to make this transition much easier ... and more enjoyable.

+1
Weaknesses
annexOPR : 6/19/2017 12:12 pm : link
"Lean body type with minimal body armor. Allows pressure to alter his process and disrupt his accuracy. Doesn't consistently reset his base once moved from his spot. Ball placement looks perfect on some passes and erratic on others. Needs to lead his receivers better instead of leaving them out to dry or making them work for the catch. Too willing to challenge heavy coverage, leading to frustrating decisions. Relies on his preordained reads and doesn't consistently anticipate defenders. High volume of throws within five yards of the line of scrimmage in the Cal offense and faces a steep learning curve digesting a pro-style offense."

Work out. Mechanics. "Too willing" = "gunslinger" if the experts like you. More than enough time for a "learning curve".

Shanahan had his eyes on CJ Beathard, and has his very rational and thought out process for picking him......and as you know as the owner of #2 overall he had a genuine look at the entire draft for QBs.

Even if Webb was better than Beathard, he wasn't good enough in his eyes to pass up on non QBs that will make an impact.

Drew Boylhart's concerns...

Davis might fit a west coast offense but his lack of consistency and accuracy getting rid of the ball, will affect his ability to be successful in any style of offense. All of his problems come from his lack of mechanics in his footwork. It affects his accuracy, velocity, and consistency. Davis also lacks common sense in his decision making thinking he is a better passer than he is and trying to make passes his talents suggest are not his strengths.

I don't think the Giants stole a 1st round pick in the 3rd round, but being good enough to warrant a 3rd round pick is nothing to sneeze at. After missing out on Phil Simms, Bill Walsh felt Joe Montana was good enough to warrant a 3rd round pick and it turned out okay. I'm optimistic about Webb. I was also optimistic about Nassib.

p.s.--I think the article is unfair to compare the number of INTs Eli was throwing in practice when first learning the system to how many Webb has been throwing. For one, Eli was going up against the first string DBs, Webb has been going up against guys who will be out of football in September (for the most part). Second of all, it's false to suggest that throwing fewer INTs in practice is an indicator of how well you know the system. It could simply mean you are taking fewer chances in practice. And practice is the time to be testing the limits on what kind of chances to be taking. Kind of like a kicker testing his range before kickoff so the coach knows from what distances he will be good to go in each direction. I'm not saying it's good to be throwing INTs in practice, I'm just saying I wouldn't read anything into it one way or another.

That's fine, your a 49ers fan and have probably already started the rationalization process. But QB is the most important position in all of sports. Just hope for your sake they didn't make the exact same mistake again. Aaron Rodgers should be your QB right now.
