NFT: Fall asleep for a few mins wake up panic breathing, wtf?

montanagiant : 6/18/2017 6:40 pm
So every now and then I will lay down to go to sleep and go through about an hours worth of what I described above. can go months without it happening then hit a couple weeks in a row where it happens all the time. Usually occurs when I am in a higher stress jobsight I am running.

Anyone else ever have this happen? Internet seems to think this is anxiety but I have also seen where some say Narcolepsy. I don't really stop breathing i just semi wake up and start breathing heavy and fast.
i have had breathing issues
Vanzetti : 6/18/2017 6:50 pm : link
not exactly what you describe but something close

it's probably something you are dreaming. but check your pulse next time it happens to make sure it is not afib--as long as it is regular (no matter how fast) you are fine

i'm not a doctor obviously but this type of weird shit just happens as you get older. probably nothing to worry about if it goes away for extended periods.
Stress

It would happen more often if it was anything else. Sounds like you have yourself preconditioned for it now.

As always, see your health professional instead of us idiots on here.

Not a fun thing. Hope you work it out.
Really?

"this type of weird shit just happens as you get older"

Not. If it does, there is something wrong.
Sounds like sleep apnea

do you dream about suffocating, as well?
Yeah have an appointment set for next week
montanagiant : 6/18/2017 7:24 pm : link
And yes it actually becomes something you create in your head prior to going to sleep because you're worrying about it

Talk in your sleep? Do you have a ton of nightmares or have trouble dreaming at all.

Do you have acid reflux?

Do you get sinus infections all the time?

Does your chest feel tight in the morning when you wake up?

you have to understand you could have PTSD. While you don't work on the front lines, your job is to get peoples lives back together after a disaster as quickly as possible for them to resume a normal life.

You already have posted on here how you upset you were because you thought your reputation was being damaged by a false claim that you could prove false.

It's not normal my friend. Glad you have an appointment.

There are a lot of members on here that you can reach out to if you ever want to talk.

You know who they are.

Sounds like panic attacks. Not an age thing at all. I had them from early 20s to early 30s.

Its sleep apnea. Possibly central sleep apnea. What you described is exactly what I have. Get it checked.
Point is that
ctc in ftmyers : 6/18/2017 8:36 pm : link
it can be anything.

There is a reason doctors go to medical school.

Well said.
Don't lose sleep over it (pun intended) until/unless the doc actually finds something to worry about.

I've had it for a number of years but didn't know it until I got married and my wife told me I stopped breathing and used to wake up all the time out of breath.
Good luck with your testing and hope it tells you what is going on
Hmmm

Sounds like stress to me I used to wake-up all time and couldn't go back to sleep worried about a summer rental property I owed whether I was wondering if it was going to rent out or if something was going to happen to the house when I was not there. Say in the winter if pipes would freeze up and break. Which happened once causing 60k in house damage. Thank god it was covered by insurance but still was hell to go through. That said got rid of the house and issue was gone. There is a point when you realize its not worth your health and always thinking about it. So I would say from experience make better life decisions. I always got the same feeling when money was a issue or if things pile up that need to get finished. So I have always made sure these issues would not happen anymore.

I've had a few recent stretches of waking up in a panic. Literally jumped out of bed a few times. I don't know what it was.. I'd have a couple of week-long stretches where it would happen but it hasn't happened in a while.

Hard to explain. It wasn't that I couldn't breathe - I'd just suddenly snap out of being asleep and my heart would be racing and I'd be all disoriented and out of sorts.

It basically felt like someone put an air horn in my face while i was fast asleep and sounded it. Except there was no noise or anything.

No idea what it was. I'm assuming it was just stress or something. I never went to the doc or anything for it. It just kinda stopped happening.
There are many sleep related problems
Marty in Albany : 6/18/2017 11:43 pm : link
Sleep apnea is a very common one and it is easy to diagnose. It is a good place to start.

Good luck.
Same here, sleep apnea.
smshmth8690 : 6/18/2017 11:46 pm : link
I know you plan on getting it checked out, but until then, if you have trouble sleeping, try a recliner. I find that it helps my apnea a bit.
Could be both sleep apnea and stress.
idinkido : 6/19/2017 5:35 am : link
Advice about getting it checked out is sound. Also, you need to learn how to diffuse the effect stress has on you.
Glad you are getting it checked out
buford : 6/19/2017 7:22 am : link
I just heard that Carrie Fisher died partly from sleep apnea which caused a heart attack. So it's scary.

I used to wake up at 2-3 in the morning regularly like this. I did have a cortisol issue because of irregular blood sugar. If your blood sugar gets low, your body will pump up the cortisol which obviously will wake you up. So in addition to getting other things checked out, make sure the test your blood sugar.
