From Dave Te-Hey Big Blue-Play Scouting Director

nflscouting : 6/19/2017 1:16 pm
Okay guys, I am identifying some of the players I feel are rising stars and also looking at talent that might fit what I feel will be Giants needs after the season. Time for Big Blue readers to play college scouting director. Look at the current roster, gaze into the future. Based on the current talent base, name me three areas of need, if you were setting the draft board up for 2018. I'll chime in over the next few weeks with players I think match the Giants criteria to fill those spots.

OL and CB seem like the obvious areas to me.

I remember reading that we don't really have many LBs locked up after this year so that makes sense to me too.

I think RB on offense and DT on defense would be in that second tier of potential needs next year.

This +1. OG or OT is the primary. It doesn't matter. The cupboard is bare and need to be restocked.

If we're trying to forecast a first rounder, the smart money is on any of DE/WR/CB.
OT, OG, CB

Think Giants may run into contract hell and may not be able to retain talent like Pugh and DRC. OT is questionable. TY, Dave
My feeling is......
Ed A. : 6/19/2017 1:57 pm : link
they will go for a LB, DT, OT, CB and a RB. Not necessarily in that order.

Agree with this. The way this team has been built and coached, these are the 3 positions we place most value on and depend on most.

While we're mostly set there entering this season, barring serious injury bug, we likely need to plan ahead for the following:

- Assuming we back up the brinks truck for OBJ, there's no guarantee we will be able to pay Shepard too when the time comes. That's 3-4 years away still, but should we have the chance to grab another elite cost controlled WR, we could well do so as early as next year's. Also, Marshall, while a nice add this year, isn't someone we would count on for the future

- While loaded at CB this season, DRC is nearing the finish line. I'm sure we'll look to add another elite CB soon - our top 3 are essentially all starters in today's NFL

- JPP and OV are elite when healthy - but neither were healthy a full season last year, and we saw how steep the drop off to our backups was. We tried to add depth, but are definitely ready for our next elite DE find

I'd rank them DE 1, CB 2, WR 3 in terms of needs,

OT and RB are needs too if we can find an elite player
Cb, PK and OL

Might need to draft another qb if Webb craps out
A lot depends on Flowers.. but assuming he improves

Edge Rushing OLB, an every down Running Back, and #2 WR (Marshall's eventual replacement). Thinking about this just reminds me that this current Giants roster is stacked!
QB....

I think the OL will surprise everyone this year.

I think edge rusher is a pretty significant need. I know we have a lot of money tied up in JPP and Vernon, but neither is a pure pass rusher at this point. Find an edge rusher and move JPP inside on passing downs.
Thankfully not too many to choose from

OT - One piece could fix a lot
S - A ball hawk would make a really good defense Great
LB - A 4 down rangy LB who can cover
Just to play devil's advocate for a moment re. CB:

Three of the team's biggest 2018 cap numbers belong to cornerbacks. While it's true that Rodgers-Cromartie is a potential cap casualty - an aging, expensive star whose workload has to be managed - he's also a game-changer in his current role. So, unless you assume 2017 is his last year in blue, 2018 might be a bit early to throw even more resources at the CB position.

I really hope Moss develops into a rotational asset at DE. Keeping Vernon and Pierre-Paul fresh has to be a priority. The DT rotation might need help too. At this point, it's Harrison, Tomlinson's potential and a lot of blank space in 2018.

will definitely affect who we keep for 2018 season. DRC is one of my favorite players and feel he definitely makes winning plays but shit happens.
