NFT: Yankees trade possibilities

blueblood'11 : 6/20/2017 6:18 am
Now that Torres is on the shelf for the rest of the year it looks like the Yanks may be in the trade market for third base help. One name that was mentioned was one time Yankee Solarte. He was part of the deal that brought Headley over from the Padres. Even though Headley is showing signs of hitting better again he is far from being clutch.

Solarte is having a better year and is more consistent as a hitter. Plus he's a free agent so why not go get him and think about Headley moving to first base. He's played there before. For as inept as he can be at times he's a better option then Chris Carter who is a strikeout machine. It's almost halfway into the season and the Yankees are still waiting for him to get on a roll. I'm not holding my breath.

And still a huge NO.
If Bird is out for the long haul,

Which seems increasingly likely, a call across town to the Mets about Bruce could be a decent fit, purely depending on price.

I'm in favor of giving Austin the job immediately, but there seems to be some aversion to doing so.

Another, NO. Cannot sacrifice the future for now. Bird will be up sooner or later and likely sooner.
moving Headley to !B solves nothing. Just moving an unproductive

The Yankees and Mets would never make a major deal, but if they did, the guy you would want for 1B is Duda, not Bruce. Perfect Yankee Stadium swing, good fielder, and a FA after the season
As bad as Headley and Carter have been, we need to trade for

pitching, and then more pitching, before we trade for positional players. We have some guys who can take over in the IF (Austin, Wade) at some point this year. We don't have any pitching depth either in the rotation or bullpen.

Someone made the comment yesterday that the team may be using Austin as trade bait which is why we have not seen him moved up.

He's a pure 3 month-rental. Mets allegedly tried like crazy to move him over the summer, to no avail. He's hit well this year, but given that 1B is arguably the deepest position in the majors, the underlying assumption is that the price is cheap.

Crazy to consider giving Mike Ford a stab at first if Bird can't get

The Yanks NEVER had any intention of contending in 2017- this was always planned as a rebuild/growth season with the kids, slowly integrating them over the season.

IMO, given Cashman's comments, the Yanks are NOT going to make big trades to try and stay in contention. Instead, they will continue to call up prospects and see what they have internally.

This isn't 2009- where it was "all in"- win or else. This is a different plan. If injuries and ineffectiveness cause them to fall out of the race, I doubt- based on Cashman's comments- that they will take major steps or trade prospects to save the season.

With all that said, the Yanks ARE in 1st place- and even if they lose that- they hold a significant wild card lead. Not to saw that it will hold, but people are getting ahead of themselves.

Don't build up unrealistic expectations of the Yanks making big trades. Last year, someone on this site kept going on about how the Yanks OWED him for his fandom to make moves to stay in the race and felt betrayed when they sold off at the deadline. That was the right move then- and would be the right move again at the July trade deadline if they fall out of the race.

This team was not constructed to be a playoff contender in 2017. If they do it by accident, great. But if they fade, they will look to cash in on their vets- Gardner, Pineda, Carter, Clippard- and Headley- if they can.
good points Rich
Victor in CT : 6/20/2017 10:15 am : link
they have a plan. I hope they stick to it. I'm glad the days of George are gone when they went out and brought in a slug like Raul Mondesi becuase someone made an error in a June loss.
Rich other than Gerrit Cole who is getting ahead of themselves here?
Stu11 : 6/20/2017 11:14 am : link
And I'm sorry when you are in first place approaching July you are in it to contend. Of course nobody expected this but here we are. I'm not saying all in trading our blue chippers, but Cash will make a trade for a vet maybe using the B prospects if he feels it will best help the team. I guess some of you are better than me. Sorry when the Yanks are in first and have a good exciting team I'm not going to be like Awww shucks we lost, lets go get'em tommorrow! As a fan I get invested. I have it in perspective, I'm enjoying this immensely and sorry when you are a contender you're not playing with house money. Now that Houston is coming back to earth, there is no team in the AL that is prohibitive favorites to make the WS over us. There are no guarantees of the future.

And the poster I cited in my post identifies himself.
Adding a pitcher young pitcher like Cole
superspynyg : 6/20/2017 12:35 pm : link
is not just a move for now but for the next 10 years.

Having said that;
1 I do not think the Yanks will give up what It would take to get him.
and
2 Not sure the Pirates want to trade him right now unless they get a Chris Sale haul (i.e #1 MLB overall prospect plus 2 top 20 overall prospects). We are not doing that.

But we could add a better SP 1b or 3b. Maybe not a stud.
Cole has had 1 good season in 5
Phil in LA : 6/20/2017 12:37 pm : link
fuck him. Not worth anything we have to offer and probably have better guys in the system.

him.
Yea Cole just seems to be a disaster waiting to happen in the AL East
Stu11 : 6/20/2017 12:52 pm : link
You have to be careful with those NL pitchers. Unless they have ridiculously dominant stuff its a lot tougher to pitch in the AL, especially the East.

This thinking dosent preclude them for making a move for this season and beyond. If there is a way to get a starter controlled for next year also a move could be justified.

This is correct. In fact, there is a good case that can be made that this would be Cashman's "power play"- add someone who is controlled for years and is young enough to be in their prime throughout those years of team control. In that way, you do not disturb the base plan- and in fact, enhance it.

The central question is whether it is possible to make such a deal without Torres, Frazier, Adams or Rutherford being part of the deal and upsetting the apple cart.

Absolutely true. But teams and fans seem to over value their people.

I would be happy with the Yanks
superspynyg : 6/20/2017 2:12 pm : link
getting into the ALDS this year (and taking it to 5 games).

I would extremely happy with winning the division.

I would be ecstatic if they made the ALCS and won 2-3 games.

I do not see us in WS this year. But it could happen.
There is definitely a price that makes sense for Cole for the Yankees
Heisenberg : 6/20/2017 2:15 pm : link
I'm not convinced that PIT has devalued him to the point where they'll accept what the Yanks would give.

His struggles aside, the Yankees liked him enough to draft him in the first round. They might still like him as a potential fit.
Beyond Cole who are
blue2 : 6/20/2017 3:41 pm : link
the starting pitchers that many of you want the Yankees to acquire for scraps?

Aces in baseball cost to much and their risk of injury is to great to shell out what it would cost to have one.

Building a deeper and more consistent pen seems like the better option.

The most interesting starting pitcher on the free agent market for me is Tyler Chatwood. I think his best baseball is in front of him, not an ace but a solid rotation piece.
Yankees should target

Vargas from KC. Cheap durable and consistent

I think Torres and Adams should be the untouchables. They can afford to part with either Frazier or Rutherford, but I wouldn't let go of both. My preference would be to keep Rutherford, he's more of a wild card because he's further removed from the majors, but given the current OF depth, I think the later ETA is a good thing, not a bad thing.

If the main piece in a trade for Cole is Frazier, that's a win for the Yankees. But as others have said, that may not be nearly enough.

You just don't know when to stop digging, do you.

The Yanks are NOT going to go after Cole, and they are NOT trading Frazier for Cole.
I am definitely against trading any prospects for stopgaps. Bring
Jim in Hoboken : 6/20/2017 10:13 pm : link
the youngsters up and see what they can do. Bring Wade up to play 3rd, if he fails bring Andujar up in a couple of months. Let's see what the young ones can do.

Solarte does nothing to enhance our chances this year.

The Yanks are good and exciting this year because of the youngsters, not veterans like Headley, Ellsbury, or Holliday. People didn't want to trade Gardner one month ago, how about now?

This year is gravy, promote the prospects and see which ones distinguish themselves.
