NFT: Suggestion needed from BBI WWI Book Barrons

superspynyg : 6/20/2017 11:15 am
I am taking my wife to Paris in Sept. I have convinced her to go on a tour of Normanady. I would like a good book that is a good read (not just jargon) about D day to help prepare my self for the experience.

What are your suggestions?

Thanks in advance..
I'm assuming you meant WWII?

My favorite D-Day books are Cornelius Ryan's The Longest Day, Antony Beevor's D-Day, the Battle For Normandy, and Alex Kershaw's The Bedford Boys, about the men from one small town (Bedford, VA)in the first wave of the 116th Infantry at Omaha Beach. They had been National Guardsmen, so they were all in the same company. Nineteen of them were killed.

and Martin Gilmore, two of the best historians of all time, both have books on D-Day that are quite good. Gilbert's volume is shorter, probably less than 200 pages. There is a book called Double Cross which is a fun read about all the different D-Day deceptions but I forget the author.

Overlord by Max Hastings is also another option.
