Snacks, Jackrabbit, Olivier, JPP .....

grizz299 : 6/21/2017 9:35 pm
What is the success rate for QB taken in the first ten? 50%. or less?
For high priced free agents in their first year...???

Include Robinson in the package and we really were gifted with some astute maneuvering. Brilliant even.
I'd say everyone but the injured Oliver exceeded expectations...and that's particularly rare in the first year when some guys back off to count the money or try too hard to justify it. Think of it...not just good players, 4 guys who can be mentioned among the very best at their positions..
All the howls.."you can't buy a defense"..probably is true as a generality, just makes JR's achievement stand out.
And the yowls when he overspsent for the Safety and CAnty in 2011...all that did was bring us a superbowl.
The Man doesn't get enough credit. Dignified, hard working, well spoken and classy individual who worked his way thru the system..Kudos.
My hunch...Ellison isn't getting much pub right now but he's gonna be very important.
Last year was a miraculous haul by Reese.

You left out, "He's a credit to his race."
As much as I defended the signing
Ten Ton Hammer : 6/21/2017 10:49 pm : link
Chris Canty was way overpaid for what he did. And judging from his radio work he's a prick, too.
OV didn't meet expectations?
est1986 : 6/21/2017 11:02 pm : link
He only made the second all-pro team, he finished top of the league in tackles for a loss, and he was maybe top 3 in total QB pressure's (hits/sacks/hurries). Not to mention he played the whole year with a shattered hand and played damn near every snap.

OV was playing with a broken (some say shattered hand) for most of the season. Still compiled a respectable 8.5 sacks and killed in other deep metrics like pressure and QB hits. Not to mention helping anchor one of the best rush defenses in the NFL.

I for one am excited for a season when the best 4-3 DE tandem on the planet can use both hands :-)
Giants' Olivier Vernon has been playing with 'shattered hand' - ( New Window )
If he didn't meet expactations its only

because of what he got paid. Other than that he was really good.
How did the Jets let Snacks walk?
JohnB : 6/22/2017 8:11 am : link
Really?

I don't follow Gang Green so if anyone does, please explain to me why he hit the open market.

And years ago, how did they let Kareem McKenzie walk? Don't think they know shit about evaluating talent and building a team.

How did the Jets:

Believe in Rex Ryan
Think Mark Sanchez would be a franchise QB
Draft Geno Smith
Let Snacks walk etc

OV 2nd team All Pro playing hurt.
BigBlueWhale : 6/22/2017 9:04 am : link
That's a stud. He went up a notch in my book, not down.
I know it's only preseason, but check out the level he was playing at before getting hurt vs. DAL. Preseason or not, it was an elite level of play you rarely see. Reminded me of Strahan the way he was using leverage to control blockers and playing run/pass.

They spent a lot of money in 2015 to be short-term competitive, if I remember correctly. Didn't they get Marshall and Decker and a few others?
Poorly stated, didn't mean to be
grizz299 : 6/22/2017 10:02 am : link
critcial of Oliver and meant the remark within the context of the injury and the excessive minutes he logged.
He was not though the demon pass rusher that I expect to see this year.
The greater point was how good and how unlikely the haul.
I note that now you can't compliment a man without a racial context...I have always supported JR and if someday I criticize him that, according to one poster here, will likely make me a bigot. Too bad...sad really.
If anything
Johnny5 : 6/22/2017 10:11 am : link
I think they all exceeded my expectations. Just a great haul all the way around... and definitely worth every dime we spent.
Reese has had his share of hits and misses, like any GM.
Big Blue Blogger : 6/22/2017 11:14 am : link
Canty and Boley arrived in 2009 (along with Rocky Bernard, who was eventually cut and re-signed cheaply). Rolle was a 2010 addition. Those signings paid off down the stretch in 2011, bu the overall ROI was mixed. Rolle was a leader on Perry Fewell's unit. That's a bit of a double-edged sword in itself.

Reese has also been criticized for the money given to Baas in 2011 and Beatty in 2013, and for throwing good money after bad on Chris Snee and Mathias Kiwanuka, among others. Martellus Bennett was a very good signing in 2012, and wound up droving his own price tag out of the Giants' range. Key 2013 gamble Jon Beason didn't pan out at all. Rodgers-Cromartie has been highly productive since arriving in 2014. The FA class of 2015 (Harris, Thomas, Vereen, Casillas) has been so-so, with Casillas being the one overachiever.

Then came 2016. I don't think Reese suddenly became brilliant. (He was always smart, and still is.) Maybe the pro-personnel evaluation process improved. There must be some luck involved as well, with good fits for a bunch of major needs, and all the new arrivals staying healthy. Mostly, I think the team had a truckload of cap space for the first time in forever, and spent it very well.
Grizz is very articulate

and well spoken, a credit to his race and ethnicity.

He also said that OV was the only player who did not EXCEED expectations which to me is true, and does not indicate any disappointment.
My point Grizz is

that the job JR has done is completely irrelevant to his skin tone. Your language makes it sound surprising that a man of his skin tone can be well spoken and dignified Just sayin'...

I don't know how this triggered you...

But clearly it did.

Seems to me, though, that you're the one who injected race into it with your "credit to his race" comment. What grizz wrote about Reese could be applied to any successful GM.
Maybe it's generational, Klaatu.

Have you ever heard of a white dude referred to as "dignified and well-spoken"? Let's judge the man on his merits.
If you ask me,
Mark C : 6/22/2017 3:34 pm : link
the drafting of OBJ, moving up to get Collins, the signings of Snacks, Jackrabbit and Vernon, and the repair work done at TE during this offseason, should shut up all the Reese haters for five years, minimum.

And, if Webb turns out to be the next franchise QB, Reese should have this job for as long as he wants it.

SHOULD, yes.

If the Giants lose week 1 somehow, the haters will be back. [DIDN'T ADDRESS THE OL RABBLE RABBLE]

I would kill for another RT like McKenzie ...
Dignified, well spoken and classy?

Jerry Reese? I think JRs a heck of a good GM. Don't understand how people kill this guy at all. But when I see this guy's pressers about the last words I'd use to describe him would be classy or well spoken. Did you happen to catch TCs farewell presser where JR said the Giants failures weren't his fault? JR seems like a tone def stiff prick to me. Good GM. May very well be remembered as a great GM. But not exactly Mr Personality based on what I've seen.
