Giants are $7.6M under the salary cap according to NFLPA records. Only four teams (Eagles, Rams, Lions, Ravens) have less money available.
Can always just hand the keys over to Webb

and cut Eli to open up more cap space.
$7.6m

Is plenty as there are always restructurings. We could cut
A few guys in a heart beat and get to $15m. Not an issue.

Although I believe you are being sarcastic, however cutting Eli this year at this point would create a dead cap value of $31.6M; meaning the Giants would have to cut a bunch of other players to get under the cap.
When dollars are needed...

JT Thomas can be cut. Surprised he is still on the team, although there was something said about how the Giants could be waiting for him to be cleared medically to return in order to avoid an injury settlement.
More dollars
ny2plano : 6/22/2017 10:17 am : link
Kerry Wynn and Will Tye could also be cut to free up some money.
Good.
Keith : 6/22/2017 10:20 am : link
We are a contender, we should spend the money available. I can't complain about any of the money spent the past 2 seasons. Other than OBJ, he's a cancer who needs to be traded before he makes money.

Will Tye? He's tied with five other players for the 47th through 52nd highest cap numbers on the team, at $615K. So cutting him doesn't really free any offseason cap space.
JT has to pass a physical to be cut
est1986 : 6/22/2017 10:55 am : link
Guarantee he is milking it at this point in order to temporarily avoid the inevitable cut.

Sorry about that.
Over the cap
Pete in MD : 6/22/2017 11:14 am : link
was pretty close in their estimate of a little over $8M in cap space. Spotrac only estimates it at $6.4M.

Based on what, and for what purpose? If the cut is "inevitable", isn't he better off getting cut now?

The simpler explanation is that the Giants have kept Thomas on the roster because there's no urgent reason to cut him until they know how far his recovery has progressed by August, and how hard the other LBs get hit by pre-season injuries.

Actually, while the poster was being facetious, your response is false.

Since we are now in the post June 1 period, if the Giants suddenly had a brain cramp and cut Eli today, they would actually SAVE $500,000 against the cap, as Eli would only count for $19,200,000 instead of the current $19,700,000.

Of course, the whole discussion is meaningless at this point- the Giants are not going to cut Eli at this point of the season.

However, it IS worth noting that when the league year starts in 2018, Eli is due a $5M roster bonus- and cutting or trading him before June 1 would result in him counting for only $6.2M against the cap- saving the Giants $16M in cap space.

I don't think that happens- but the idea that getting rid of Eli is a cap crusher is now completely false.
Plenty of moves
PaulN : 6/22/2017 12:08 pm : link
Kerry Wynn, Owa Odighizuwa, J.T. Thomas, Valentino Blake, Nat Berhe, Roger Lewis, Dwayne Harris, Tavarres King, Shaun Draughn, and Geno Smith all could be cut. That should clear some space. There are also some contracts that could still be restructured also, this is really not an issue.

Yes lets cut guys now before camp. Good plan
People are getting too tied up in misinformation
rich in DC : 6/22/2017 1:16 pm : link
Remember that the Giants were very careful not to create problems down the road with lots of restructures to create cap space.

Sure, they forced Harris and Vereen to take pay cuts- but did not kick the cap can down the road.

Besides, even if they had $10M or $20M in cap space right now, who is there to spend it on? They are retaining cap space to cover for the inevitable IR hits and signing in-season bodies to fill the roster.

I think Paul's point was that there's room for maneuver if the Giants eventually want to clear space to sign somebody, or perhaps to front-load an extension. FWIW, I think Wynn and Thomas are the only names on that list worth mentioning. The others either don't make much or (as in Harris's case) carry dead-money hits that would offset the savings.
The cap now
Marty866b : 6/22/2017 1:29 pm : link
Means little as everyone is signed. We have enough money to sign a veteran if one shakes loose that the team believes it needs. The cap will be important soon as the season is over.
Right
PaulN : 6/22/2017 3:31 pm : link
The guy is just trying to show how intelligent he is, let him.
There are moves that can be made to create cap, these are players that could, COULD, be let go.

PaulN : 6/22/2017 3:38 pm : link
The Giants are in a win now mode. They are not worrying about the cap, I wish I never posted, I was just trying to make a point they could create space, it was a stupid thread. We want to win now. The team is geared for a run now, there is no room to worry about the cap when the team has a history of managing it well, when you are ready for a run your cap space should be lower, you have valuable assets. The next two seasons are the time for the Giants to get that 5th ring.

If he fails the physical on the opening day of training camp, they can cut him at the cost of $1M, if my read on the CBA is correct. And the $1M can be recouped if/when he signs with another team (again, if my reading of the CBA is correct).
Why do they need cap space now?
Mike in Boston : 6/23/2017 6:18 am : link
It's kind of a meaningless stat, as you only need cap space if you have a deal with someone you are about to sign. At this point, the most likely deals are with some marginal player who is cur from some other team, in which case we will cut some other marginal player to get the room. Or we might need to sign an injury replacement, but, again, guys who are available mid season can usually had for close to vet minimum. You can also roll it over to next year, or accelerate resigning a player you want like Beckham or Pugh.
Well it's not entirely meaningless
bhill410 : 6/23/2017 6:28 am : link
As you can cArry over the unused portion to next year.

Yes, as I said. But to make a meaningful comparison on that basis, you'd also have to know the cap numbers of the players on the teams who are signed for next year, and how many players that is for each team. otherwise you are just looking at one portion, and probably not the most important one, of the teams' 2018 cap position.
OMG ONLY 4 TEAMS HAVE LESS?!?!
annexOPR : 6/23/2017 7:46 am : link
Probably because this roster is loaded with talent. It's a good thing.

seems to me
fkap : 6/23/2017 8:33 am : link
not spending to the cap means a team is looking to maximize profit, possibly at the expense of fielding a quality product.

people constantly point to the cap as a restraint on quality of product. Over the last several years, since the last league contract, multiple teams routinely are well under the cap. that is a benefit to the owners.

The Giants have always spent to the cap. being a few million from the limit allows them leeway if something comes up, but is basically up to the cap.
The fact that we have $7.6 given last year's spending spree is amazing
SGMen : 7/4/2017 7:15 pm : link
We are fielding a good team. We kept our defense in tact, well outside of DT Hankins who maybe wasn't great but was still young and better than Bromley, Thomas or Bryant (veterans) and likely better than the rookie D. Tomlinson (at least to start the season as he'll improve) so ???

But overall, we are in good shape. I'm not sure how we'll look at season's end as Vernon's, Snacks, Eli, Jenkins and others contracts go up I believe. But you always see restructures, surprise cuts.

The only cut of merit we could make to open more space this year is JT Thomas. I mean, you could cut DRC too but that would be stupid given his level of play of position inside as a slot guy.

Bravo to Reese and company.
