NFT: New York Knicks Top 10 Worse Franchise Moves

Earl the goat : 6/22/2017 1:54 pm
Not in any order

1. Drafting Fredric Weiss over Ron Artest
2. Signing Alan Houston to 6 years 120 million contract
3. Trading Camby and draft pick(nene) for Mcdyess
4. Signing Noah 4 years 78 million
5. Trading for Stephon Marbury
6. Making Phil GM. So far
7. Letting Pat Riley walk or resign
8. Trading Clyde
9. Trading Ewing
10. And I'll get beaten up for this one but trading for Melo and resigning him to a No trade contract

Thoughts?? What did I miss?
I'll disagree on Weis
LCtheINTMachine : 6/22/2017 2:00 pm : link
Yes it was a wasted pick but Artest would likely have flamed out in NY and wouldnt have lasted long. The Knicks would have been better off picking Kirilenko but calling a pick at No. 15 the worst move in franchise history is incorrect since those picks usually don't become anything more than role players.

Bringing in Melo is much worse IMO.
No mention of Eddy Curry

Good Call I missed that
You missed one
GeofromNJ : 6/22/2017 2:06 pm : link
Trading Camby, Novak, 2016 first-round pick, and two future second-round picks for Andrea Bargnani. Camby was a very good player and the draft pick was unprotected as I recall.
Hiring Layden was way worse than Phil so far.
Keith : 6/22/2017 2:11 pm : link
Hiring Isiah was worse so far. Phil seems to be trying to take that trophy though.

Good call again
That list is really bad by the way.
Keith : 6/22/2017 2:12 pm : link
As far as personnel moves, there was like 10 worse than all of the ones you listed.
That list is not even close.
larryflower37 : 6/22/2017 2:20 pm : link
Here is one
Knicks trade Marcus Camby, Mark Jackson, and the seventh overall pick in the 2002 draft for Antonio McDyess.
If they trade KP
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/22/2017 2:23 pm : link
It'll rank up there pretty high.
Selling to the Dolans
spike : 6/22/2017 2:23 pm : link
.
The Curry sign and trade was the worst.
Keith : 6/22/2017 2:24 pm : link
Francis, McDyess, Bargnani, Jerome James, Allan Houston(yes he was a good player, but that contract!), Shandon Anderson, Howard Eisley, trading Ewing. There are so many. Layden and Isiah head the list though.
Hiring Isiah
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/22/2017 2:27 pm : link
ranks up there too.

What a disaster that regime was. I didn't think it could get worse, but then Phil appeared on the scene.
Honestly, I think Layden was much worse.
Keith : 6/22/2017 2:32 pm : link
Signed a bunch of terrible ball players like Anderson and Eisley to massive contracts. Isiah at least was able to add some talent before he signed them to massive contracts.

1. Layden
2. Isiah
3. Curry

That has to start my list.

Larry Flowers. Read closely. It's on the list

#1 Dolan becomes owner of Knicks
#2 Hiring Isaiah Thomas
#1...
M.S. : 6/22/2017 2:42 pm : link

...awarding New York an NBA franchise.
You really need top 20 not 10
arniefez : 6/22/2017 2:43 pm : link
and that might not cover the Dolan years.
Hard to say if "letting" Riley walk is on the list
mfsd : 6/22/2017 2:53 pm : link
he may well have left anyway even if the Knicks offered him all he asked. He wanted his empire and country clubs in Miami

Similar to letting Checketts go - he left when Knicks wouldn't give him full control...but who knows if he would have stayed with the current ownership situation anyway

Either way, what a pathetic commentary that we can debate which moves do and don't make a top ten worst moves list
Loved the Knicks from late 60's thru the Ewing years
PatersonPlank : 6/22/2017 2:57 pm : link
It's been "Jets-like" ever since. What a shame, but they are a joke now.
Isaiah Thomas has to be on this list
teso56 : 6/22/2017 2:58 pm : link
In some capacity. The Frederic Weis pick was lame but not something that set them back years like Thomas, Jackson, Marbury or Melo.
Letting
PaulN : 6/22/2017 3:23 pm : link
Scumbag Dolan take over everything is by far the worst trade, event, whatever you want to call it happen to the Knicks, and it isn't even close.

With Jackson
Samiam : 6/22/2017 3:37 pm : link
In his 3 years here, he's had 1 first round pick which he hit out of the park. If he hits another one out of the park tonight, the universal condemnation of his performance would have to be measured and wonder how he would have done if the team hadn't given up the first round for crap. There is nothing that Jackson could do that would match the stupidity of throwing in an unprotected 1st round pick for Bargnani who Toronto pretty clearly wanted to get of. One of the stupidest trades in the history of the game as far as I'm concerned. Jackson clearly screwed up with the Noah contract and handling Melo especially giving him a no trade but his performance is not as bad as a few of his predecessors. but, he can a long way towards redeeming himself with the right pick tonight. I just wish the team hadn't won some meaningless games in the last weeks or maybe Fox could have been the pick. Reminds me of when the team could have had Curry but settled for that Jordan something.
I mean...
Jan in DC : 6/22/2017 4:01 pm : link
You could just list contracts:

Howard Eisley
Shandon Anderson
Allan Houston
Jerome James
Eddy Curry
Steph Marbury
Chris Dudley
Clarence Weatherspoon

I mean, I could just keep going. There's a ton of them.

Sorry not seeing Mark Jackson on the list.. My Bad..
Going back a little further
mfsd : 6/22/2017 5:31 pm : link
Why did we let Mark Jackson go? He and Ewing had some great chemistry early on. IIRC, they thought he wasn't good enough to play half court football against the Pistons of the era

Noah and Lance Thomas belong on this list.
Not resigning Xavier McDaniel
twostepgiants : 6/22/2017 5:54 pm : link
To pursue Harvey Grant. Whom they failed to sign

This started a chain reaction of terrible moves. They then trade Mark Jackson for Doc Rivers and Charles Smith.

They also traded for Tony Campbell and Rolando Blackman to fill some of the void and both those moves failed miserably.

There is a decent chance this cost them the 1993 NBA Title and a series win over the Bulls

That Knicks team in 92 took Bulls to 7 games. They were primed to break out. This is before Starks and Mason emerged ias stars in 93.

Jackson was the perfect PG for Ewing. Xavier had the needed toughness.

Jackson and McDaniel were just a massive difference from Rivers and Smith.

The Knicks had room to make deals and sign free agents in 93 and it just all blew up once Xman left and they backpedaled to fill the hole.
Scott Sterling turned down
Phil in LA : 6/22/2017 5:57 pm : link
Luis Orr for Chris Mullins

and Louis Orr for Clyde Drexler.

Also traded the #1 that became Scottie Pippen for Juwan Oldham.

Once the Knicks
Phil in LA : 6/22/2017 6:05 pm : link
had a promising young power forward named Lonnie Shelton. Then they signed Marvin Webster to team with him. So, then Commish, Larry O"Donnel took Lonnie Shelton off the Knicks and gave him to Seattle as compensation...

Good summary. XMan was a bad SOB. I was sitting under the basket with my friends parents when he was still with Seattle and got into a brawl with Oakley right in front of us
Using the Amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups
DennyInDenville : 6/22/2017 6:22 pm : link
Right AFTER picking up his CLUB option.

By FAR the biggest waste of precious resources and could have amnesty Stoudemire, signed a new Robin for Melo and maybe have another couple good seasons..

They didn't choose not to sign McDaniel. They had cap room that summer to acquire another player, but only if they held off re- signing McDaniel. Under the CBA at the time, they were free to pay McDaniel without concern about the cap.

They thought they had an understanding with him and his agent to wait, but he decided to sign with the Celtics.

Good point.

But we really didn't prioritize him and we went after a younger guy who played his position.

We really alienated him

It was totally unnecessary as well as we had him and Mason at SF.

Ewing, Oak, Mase and XMan is one of the toughest most intimidating front courts in NBA history

It was dumb on many levels. What we needed was another shooting guard.

Mason didn't play SF at that point. He hadn't developed as a scorer yet, and was strictly used as backup PF/C.
One things for sure

XMan would have slammed that rebound home in game 5 against the Bulls. Fucking Charles Smith
