NFT: 6/23 Knicks Thread: The Day After

Jon in NYC : 6/23/2017 5:55 am
Very solid draft for the Knicks. I give it a solid B. I know most of you don't love Frank, but I think we'll be very happy with what he provides long term.

Since we've beaten the Frank talk to death, I thought it would be helpful to talk about some other guys and look at the roster construction.

With their first 2nd rounder, they took Damyean Dotson.

6'6, 44% 3PT shooter, solid athlete, seems to have upside as a passer and defender. Major knocks are that he's already 23 and has limited shot creating ability. Seems like he could step into the role Justin Holiday had.

With their second 2nd, they took Ognjen Jaramaz

Seems to be a plus athlete with good size and handle, but a subpar shooter. Probably unlikely he plays in the NBA next year but who knows.

They also signed Nigel Hayes who I think has a real shot at making the team. Smart kid, good passer, rebounder, defender. Can't shoot a lick. Good 15th man, good locker room presence.

And Luke Kornet, who seems to be able to shoot and block shots, but do practically nothing else. Apparently he signed a two way contract, so they can just bring him back and forth between NYK and Westchester? I'm honestly not quite sure how these things work. It's a new rule I believe.

Here's a crack at the current depth chart:

C. Willy/Noah/KOQ/Plumlee
PF. KP/Lance/Ndour
SF. Melo/Kuz/Hayes
SG. Lee/Dotson
PG. Frank/Randle

Woof. That is one trashy NBA roster. But that's okay.

Next step has to be moving Melo imo. Rebuild around a KP/Frank/Willy core, tank, and use the next top pick they get to bring on a high profile scorer.

Then I guess there's no reason to think they might be a good starter in the NBA.

Already explained my comment on KP, my frustration with that pick isn't KPs play it's the ass monkey who's shopping him around. But you're right, it's not a conversation worth having. You, and apparently a lot of other good BBI posters have a lot more faith in the Knicks than I do. Nothing would make me happier than being totally and completely wrong about the course of the Knicks.

I don't necessarily have great faith in the Knicks. I for sure don't have great faith in your logic or scouting abilities. That is all. Nothing more nothing less

No idea if he has NBA level talent. But his skill set is optimal both for the triangle and the modern NBA.

The top 10 in that draft look pretty bad already.

KAT
Russell
Okafor
KP
Hezonja
Cauley-Stein
Mudiay
Don't know about Stanley Johnson. Frank is okay. Lol at Winslow.

Looks pretty bad a few years later. You can only laugh when people complain they think a guy is only potentially as good as George Hill, a guy who was a borderline all star for a 50 win team. If Frank ends up on the same level as Hill, we should be THRILLED. There is a greater then 90% chance neither Monk nor Smith ever pan out to that level.

This x100.

If Frank can put up 14-5-5 with great defense and 3 pt shooting, that's an immensely valuable player.

The question is more is he a instant offense guy or someone you play 30 plus minutes a game because he becomes a plus defender or can play some 1.

Agree with this.

He'll be at least a semi-efficient scorer. The question is can he give you anything else. If not, how valuable is that 17 PPG really?

Butler also had a successful season with rondo at point this past year, who is essentially a poor mans Rubio at this point. Spacing isn't ideal but Wiggins is a better 3 point shooter than wade and KAT (and even dieng) have range out to the 3.

Some good points about why not to have passed on Monk. Well, I think they're good points, and what do I know questioning the highly successful and well run Knicks organization. Those with faith in the Knicks "successful scouts" and Zen Master need not bother reading.

Regarding resigning Rose, might good to keep him around to mentor Dotson on the NBA dating scene.

On NJ.com. The website that goes on about the eagles great SB chances year in year out.

FYI I wanted monk. But I have no evidence that he will turn out better than frank. Let's not pretend he was a guaranteed lock at 8. He fell 3 spots farther, behind a guy with questionable knee health and a team that stocked on yet another center. If you're so confident that monk is going to be better than all the guys taken ahead of them why not just wait for SL and the season to play out rather than trying to convince everyone right now through fucking New Jersey .com articles?

You are making this thread very difficult to continue reading. The constant whining about players you know absolutely nothing about is getting incredibly tedious. Can we let this play out for awhile? You couldn't pick any of these players out of a lineup. Just stop. No matter how awful the Knicks have been, I will trust their opinions over yours every single time. We get it. You think Frenchy sucks because you watched some YouTube video of him and Monk is going to the hall of fame. Because you've heard his name on Sportcenter. Can we move on now? The miserable negativity about something NONE of us know anything about is tired.
I think Monk will be a good player - not Ray Allen,
Ira : 6/25/2017 11:33 am : link
but a good scoring 2. I still like Frank better for his versatility. He's also a good shooter, but he's very good defensively, can play 2 positions and is very good in ball movement.

I think Monk will be more Ben Gordon than Ray Allen. More of an instant offense guy off the bench, can get by with him at the 2 if you have a taller PG to help out defensively, and has just enough play making ability to play the 1 for short stretches if needed. Another guy he reminds me of is a short JR Smith, limitless range, super athletic but has a tendency to settle for the jumper rather than use his athleticism to get to the rim.

Sorry Shock, didn't realize this was the thread where we all get together to applaud the great work of Phil Jackson. Seriously, if anyone asked me a week ago if I could round up 10 people who had faith in Jackson I would have said no way. Exactly. Not one single person has claimed that without a doubt, Frank will be the better player. People just want to take a wait and see approach. The only ones talking in absolutes are the ones absolutely certain that the Knicks made the wrong choice. Then this guy makes false statements about how everyone that isn't immediately bashing the choice before seeing it play out are apparently Phil apologists and proclaiming championships. When in doubt, make shit up to fit the narrative!

It's been three days of you saying the same exact thing. Don't know what the point is at this juncture. Not to mention, despite Knicks threads seemingly always coming down to two extremes, theres a difference between optimism about a pick and sycophantic obedience to the will of Phil and dolan.

nygiants16 : 6/25/2017 4:03 pm : link
there was a time in the beginning of the season where i wanted rose back but now there is no reason, knicks should be tanking next seaskn he doesnt fit...

i think if he does bring him back, going by what he said, i think he would be the 2 guard as the slasher scorer, if knicks were closer to competing he would be a fit at that position but knicks are not ready for that yet
That Rosen article is horrifying.
bceagle05 : 6/25/2017 4:19 pm : link
Rose won Phil over during the exit interview? What is it with Phil and exit interviews? Rose is gonna play how he plays, and there's no way Hornacek is gonna bench him for guys like Frank and Baker if his job is at stake. If Rose is here it's another half rebuild/half compete mentality that has plagued us since Phil arrived.

I'm willing to bet that you completely blasted the KP and Gomez picks. Wtf does being a foreign player have to do with a negative outlook for this franchise? You know nothing about the player. to be an underrated guy that helps this team win games. I hope his stats and are misleading. All I want is a team first PG that stops opposing guards from putting on a show every fucking night they play the Knicks. Let Monk light up the NBA. I want a guy that flies under the radar and helps the Knicks win. We need that player more than anything.
