NFT: NHL Draft Thread 06/23

Sammo85 : 6/23/2017 7:03 am
Draft being held in Chicago. Will be on NHL Network and NBCSN. Round 1 tonight at 7pm. Remaining rounds conducted Saturday.

Devils have #1 pick. Current thinking is they go Hischier but some smoke Patrick still in play. Unlikely to trade pick and trade down unless bowled over. Some rumors Vegas may try to trade for pick. Devils supposedly very active in trade talks as well. Rumored to be talking to MTL about Galchenyuk and also Hawks about Hjalmarsson/Anisimov. Some thought Henrique may be in play.

Rangers have #21 pick. Not clear who is being targeted but could see them targeting a defenseman prospect. Quite a few should be available around there. Rumors out there Rangers also in on Galchenyuk and are dangling Stepan around the league.

Isles have no 1st rounder. Rumors abound of trying to trade Hamonic for a 1st rounder in a package. Rumors of Flames being very interested.

figures the devils get the top pick the year there's no ovechkin/crosby/mcdavid type ...

Draft day is always interesting from an Isles fan perspective
pganut : 6/23/2017 8:14 am : link
I'm sure we'll see movement of players today, likely Hamonic as you mentioned but I expect others as well as part of a package.

For what it's worth, we entered the 2015 draft without a first round pick, but traded back in which yielded Barzal and Beauvillier, so we all expect the unexpected.
For the Rangers
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 6/23/2017 8:19 am : link
Connor Timmins or Henri Jokiharju, two right-handed defensemen with offensive skill, could be possible targets. Would love for them to get Liljegren though!

Yup. While Barzal still has to come in and take off he looks legit. What a dumb trade by Chiarelli. Good job by Snow in that deal.
I will try and give input

When I can. I watched a crap ton of juniors this year.. not much European.

Go figure...a year when the Isles don't have a first I'm all prepared.

Ooh. In China I watched Chinese woman's hockey. That was very good, actually!
The Hischier vs Patrick debate is a tough one
Jay on the Island : 6/23/2017 9:17 am : link
because if the Devils choose the wrong one then they allow the other to go to a division rival. I am torn between the two. Hischier has the higher offensive upside but Patrick seems like the safer pick who could play in the NHL next season.

there really is no wrong one.

If the Devlis select either, they have a better future than they did yesterday.
Nolan Patrick please

Yep its a tough call for the Devs
Stu11 : 6/23/2017 10:01 am : link
I think I'd ever so slightly lean towards Patrick only because its been so long since we had a good 2-way C with size. Thats a winning type hockey play. All the buzz though about Nico is that he had a superb year though...
Good luck

Tonight Devils. Tough call who to take. Tavares is not Mcdavid or Crosby but obviously a great player. Nolan will be a great building block.

They are reportedly leaning towards Hischier. If is tough but I too would take Patrick 1st overall. His injury history is a bit concerning but hopefully that won't carry over to the NHL as he gets bigger. Fish, as you said there is no McDavid in this draft but I would be thrilled if Patrick or Hischier turn into a Taveras. The Devils need to hit a homerun today and perhaps trade back into the end of round 1 for a defenseman. Mirco Mueller was a good start but they need more help on the blue line.
I know he will likely end up in Toronto or back with the Isles
Jay on the Island : 6/23/2017 10:26 am : link
but with Hall, Palmieri, Henrique and either Patrick or Hischier the Devils might be able to entice Taveras to sign with them especially if the young players like Zacha, McLeod, and Quenneville break out this year. They will have the cap space to sign.

I would expect an extension announcement pretty soon after 7/1.

With Isle fans freaking out every hour it doesn't happen after that
No, the masses who are prone to panic will do so after 7/1
pganut : 6/23/2017 10:51 am : link
I think our group here understands that there's more to it than offer big deal = JT signs. But yesterday's move and what we expect to come will also shape that decision, and I'd be careful not to discount the coaching staff moves the Isles made; it's a huge positive for Tavares. FWIW, I think he never ends up in TOR...they're saying that they have Matthews, so they don't "need" JT. I do feel very confident he will resign with the Isles, whether on 7/1 or sometime after that.
I don't see the upside for Tavares personally to sign prior to

JT likes it here, he has indicated that management has given him a clear direction of the team, which he likes. He LOVES Doug Weight as coach.

They are going to pay him handsomely. Is there a chance he waits til next season and bolts? Absolutely.

No he wouldn't. Besides, your team already has the best JT in hockey.

The Isles will just make due with the other JT.
.
arcarsenal : 6/23/2017 11:25 am : link
You're right about that - Tavares would have to play 2nd fiddle to TRJT - but I disagree that Tavares won't look good in Rangers red, white, and blue.
....
BrettNYG10 : 6/23/2017 11:55 am : link
All those things will be available to Tavares 12 months from now. If the Islanders are a bottom ten team for some reason next year, why would he re-sign?

Conversely, the opportunity is much more attractive if Ho-Sang and Barzal develop.

I think he's a top five skater in the league - two playoff appearances is such a waste for him. I think MTL/TOR are really attractive situations for a player like him.

I know you are joking but some believe it will happen. I don't see how the Rangers would create the cap space needed to sign him. I would put the chances of his re-signing with the Isles at 90%
....
BrettNYG10 : 6/23/2017 11:58 am : link
I don't think the Rangers are that attractive of a destination for a player like him, either. The Rangers have a narrow window with Lundqvist. You're taking quite a bet that they can remain in contention when he's gone. Much rather go to a team with a widening window like TOR, or a team that would be a top tier contender with his addition like MTL.

Sidebar, Capuano officially announced as Associate Coach in FLA

From the Miami Herald:
Quote:
My familiarity with the Panthers has grown a lot throughout the past few years, Capuano said in a statement, and I'm eager to work with such a young, talented group of players.

"And then punish those young, talented players when they don't play my outdated system and do my best to tear 'em down before building 'em back up...smaht and hahd, that's the expectation."

Okay, I added that last sentence, but it was what I know he's saying in his mind. And he's there to coach the D and PK, so that should be interesting.

It is strange. They have the same cap hit. But Saad is signed for 4 more seasons and Panarin for 2 more before UFA and he'll need a bigger extension. That's the only explanation I can think of

not enough.

CHI needs affordable, so you have to think 2 x A prospects and a pick.

2 of:
JHS
Barzal
Pulock
Beauviller
MDC
Sorokin
Sodestrom

MAYBE this years 2nd? If not, next years 1st.

Sounds like another big Arizona trade is in works. Raanta and Stepan likely to Coyotes. 7th overall could be part of it and DeAngelo.
.
arcarsenal : 6/23/2017 12:42 pm : link
Yeah, that's why trades like this never make sense to me. If CHI wanted to move Panarin, I don't really get it, but you're telling me they couldn't get a better package than Saad?

Saad isn't a bad player by any stretch - I just really struggle to believe CHI couldn't get more than that.

pganut : 6/23/2017 12:43 pm : link
But it seems like a deal that didn't necessarily need to be done this year. However, it'll be interesting to see how Panarin's production is affected on a line with Boone Jenner and Alex Wennberg (if he's moving into Saad's slot on L2 or if he kicks Foligno to L2 and slides into the LW1 spot with Dubinsky & Atkinson).
That Stepan deal scares the shit out of me
Giants in 07 : 6/23/2017 12:46 pm : link
First time we have a first round pick in 5 years and it's in the worst draft in that time. Now trying to get a top 10 pick?

Oh and losing two centers in three days?
De Angelo
feelflows : 6/23/2017 12:47 pm : link
is the puck moving dman the Rangers are looking for.

Another AHLer I'm a little familiar with. Moves the puck very well, has a nice shot and good vision.

He's NOT a defensive liability by any stretch, but he also not a very good defensive dman. He's only 21, though.

If it's the 7th pick and De Angelo, it's not a bad trade at all for a back-up goalie and Stepan.
