NFT: NHL Draft Thread 06/23

Sammo85 : 6/23/2017 7:03 am
Draft being held in Chicago. Will be on NHL Network and NBCSN. Round 1 tonight at 7pm. Remaining rounds conducted Saturday.

Devils have #1 pick. Current thinking is they go Hischier but some smoke Patrick still in play. Unlikely to trade pick and trade down unless bowled over. Some rumors Vegas may try to trade for pick. Devils supposedly very active in trade talks as well. Rumored to be talking to MTL about Galchenyuk and also Hawks about Hjalmarsson/Anisimov. Some thought Henrique may be in play.

Rangers have #21 pick. Not clear who is being targeted but could see them targeting a defenseman prospect. Quite a few should be available around there. Rumors out there Rangers also in on Galchenyuk and are dangling Stepan around the league.

Isles have no 1st rounder. Rumors abound of trying to trade Hamonic for a 1st rounder in a package. Rumors of Flames being very interested.

Jesus...this week has been just brutal for MSG and its tenants

Don't know anything about this guy but these scouting reports and reactions are anything but reassuring.

This sounds exactly like the way Manny Malhotra was described when the Rangers drafted him about two rounds too high.

will never stop, but they're always hilarious. No one knows how good this kid will be. Talking about potential ceilings at this point is wild to me.

Gotta trust the staff that has gotten the Rangers to the playoffs 11 out of 12 years. Also, there seem to be more positive comments about him than anything else.

IDK. Lots of Rangers fans are going apeshit, but I won't because I have no idea. It seems like a big reach though. Seems like they could've traded down for him.

Anak, I'm only kidding bud. The Mcilrath thing was funny but you were right in the end. All good, hope it works out with this kid. But I'm concerned, I'll admit.

arcarsenal : 6/23/2017 8:12 pm : link
Bering more serious for a second, if we're comparing the Rangers and Knicks, the teams have totally different needs. A "jack of all trades" or "good but not great" role player actually isn't bad for NYR because they kind of need that. They didn't necessarily need to swing for the fences.

For the Knicks, it probably would have made more sense to specifically target upside. If Frank is more of a role player, it doesn't really move the needle at all. If he's more, awesome. Just doesn't seem like many scouts have him pegged as that.

The last thing I want to even think about right now is basketball, though.

Scouting Report: Two way chameleon moves to the pace of whats required...in J20 looks like a hardnosed superstar...internationally, gives reliable utility playing a simple game...great shot, works well off the walls, and can skate...he could benefit immensely from a NA based draft season.

ESPN Insider Bio:

16. Lias Andersson, C, HV 71 (SHL)
DOB: 10/13/98 | Ht: 5' 11.25" | Wt: 198
2016-17 stats: 42 GP | 9 G | 10 A

Andersson was a solid piece for HV71 and Sweden's World Junior team this season. All he has done is produce wherever he's gone the past few seasons. He won't dazzle with high-end dekes, but there is a lot of skill to Andersson's game. He makes quick decisions, has a quick shot, sees his options well and has good puck skills. He can be a standout offensive player, though that isn't always the case. Andersson might be below average in size, but he's tough and strong for a player his age, and he can kill penalties adequately. I don't love his skating, but he isn't dragging anvils all over the ice, and considering all the other positive attributes in his offensive game, you can live without game-breaking speed.

I doubt the Rangers think he only has 2C potential.

Giroux was the 23rd pick though

General consensus I'm seeing is that he's considered a good player. But maybe could have been had around 12-15. Oh well. I'd like to see us trade 21 now.
It is a bit curious how the Rangers operate when they have a top
Anakim : 6/23/2017 8:22 pm : link
10 pick. They tend to go for the safe picks instead of the home run picks.

Al Montoya was a Goalie and as we know now (and as Fishsticks fans know), you don't go for a goalie high. You can get great goalies later on in the draft.

McIlrath was such a safe pick. There was little doubt he would make the NHL eventually, but his upside was INCREDIBLY limited. I don't think anyone thought he would be more than AT BEST a second-pair defensive defenseman. They passed on guys with much higher potentials in Cam Fowler and Vladimir Tarasenko and it came to bite them in the ass given the careers both have had and how McIlrath is dwelling in the AHL.
Sure, but the point that a lot of these comments about a players
BrettNYG10 : 6/23/2017 8:23 pm : link
Ceiling/floor/potential/etc. is just completely bullshit stands. I have zero issues with the Rangers picking a guy they thought was BPA just because consensus had him going in the teens.

I'm not that familiar with the MLB Draft but isn't signability a huge issue that affects how teams draft? The NHL, especially the Rangers, don't have much of a problem with that. Of course Kevin Hayes was an exception.
I know fuck-all about amateur hockey prospects
bigbluehoya : 6/23/2017 8:24 pm : link
But given the number of times I've heard different analysts refer to the players between 5 and 15 (or some even as broadly as 5 to 25) as fluid/interchangeable/"just a matter of preference", I see little reason to lose my shit about this one.

In fact, I kind of like the idea that he's one of the guys who's seemingly closest to ready for the big show who already just about has the body for the NHL game.

I would hope not. I would hope that they think he has 1C potential. Otherwise, they shouldn't have picked him 7th overall.
I think they key in all of this is
Anakim : 6/23/2017 8:26 pm : link
that he's more than fine as a player but he's terrible value at #7.

At least that's the consensus that I get
.
arcarsenal : 6/23/2017 8:26 pm : link
Who knows. Maybe the Rangers DON'T think he has the same ceiling the scouts do. In fact, if they took him there, they must think it's a bit higher.

I have no idea if they're right or not.. but I doubt NYR said "well, this guy is sorta safe let's just take him"

absolutely, I just mean in terms of success rate for a draft pick making it to the big league. So much projection for a 17/18 year old kid. outside of the elite prospects it's not great odds of success.

which is why I don't put much faith in rankings.

Would have been a great pick mid 1st round but certainly a reach from what you read. They probably thought a player or two that went in top 6 would be there and were surprised when they werent...kinda appears that GoRd Clark is throwing this off on Anders Kallur...

NYR pick Filip Chytil. One of the youngest players in class, and riser this year. He's a skilled, quick forward.

I love how both scouting reports on NBCSN say the weakness for both of our picks is offense :D

bigbluehoya : 6/23/2017 9:14 pm : link
One of the youngest players in the draft; only eligible by a matter of days.

Despite youth, has already played at the highest level in the Czech league. Seems like a high upside guy.

Can't imagine we see him for a few years, but adding a warm body to the pipeline is what you do at 21

More on Chytil:
Anakim : 6/23/2017 9:16 pm : link

31. Filip Chytil, C, Zlin (Czech)
DOB: 9/05/99 | Ht: 6' 0.5" | Wt: 178
2016-17 stats: 38 GP | 4 G | 4 A

Chytil was a regular in the top Czech league as a bottom-six forward for his team, despite being one of the youngest players eligible for the 2017 draft. It was hard for me to get a read on Chytil this season. On the one hand, I see a player with a fair amount of talent. On the other, I never saw him take over a game when playing against his age group, and he was often the best player on the second-best line more than being a game-changer. Chytil is an impressive skater who can be tough to check when he's coming through the neutral zone with speed. His stick skills are above average, and I watched him create chances out of nothing. He moves the puck around fine and is creative offensively. Off the puck, I'd like to see more from him in terms of grit and awareness.

But the conditional pick is top 10 protected, and according to Friedman can be pushed to 2019, and if that happens, Philly also gets a 3rd in that year.

But I have said for a long time that the rangers are not going to be able to rid themselves of the Staal and Girardi deals.

Staal isn't going to waive except for maybe one or two places, and those places are not interested in 4 more years of that contract at any level of subsidy.

The only way to gain any leverage in the situation is to tell Marc that he's the 7th D and will be wearing a suit more than a jersey, and then follow through on the threat.
