NFT: NHL Draft Thread 06/23

Sammo85 : 6/23/2017 7:03 am
Draft being held in Chicago. Will be on NHL Network and NBCSN. Round 1 tonight at 7pm. Remaining rounds conducted Saturday.

Devils have #1 pick. Current thinking is they go Hischier but some smoke Patrick still in play. Unlikely to trade pick and trade down unless bowled over. Some rumors Vegas may try to trade for pick. Devils supposedly very active in trade talks as well. Rumored to be talking to MTL about Galchenyuk and also Hawks about Hjalmarsson/Anisimov. Some thought Henrique may be in play.

Rangers have #21 pick. Not clear who is being targeted but could see them targeting a defenseman prospect. Quite a few should be available around there. Rumors out there Rangers also in on Galchenyuk and are dangling Stepan around the league.

Isles have no 1st rounder. Rumors abound of trying to trade Hamonic for a 1st rounder in a package. Rumors of Flames being very interested.

Good week for the Islanders.
So far, you're right. Still need to make one of the moves we've been hearing about, and I expect that to happen after the weekend. Let the teams get through the draft wrap-up process and start negotiations undistracted. The fact that none of the names rumored to be on the move have been traded anywhere yet means no one's missing out on opportunities. As I told my crew here offline, no move beats a bad move every time. I believe Snow does something to positively impact the Isles.

I agree that the NHL draft is probably the hardest in terms of player evaluation. The majority of these picks are teenagers who are continuing to grow and development. Some will improve with age while other's have reached their peak already. Lou left the Devils in shambles with arguably the worst group of prospects in the entire league. His last few drafts were filled with low ceiling players who never made an impact in the NHL. A great example was refusing to forfeit the 30th overall pick instead using it on Matteau who was a bust. Then the following year the Devils ended up forfeiting a top 10 pick instead.

Shero has begun reloading the system and made a great trade of a 2nd round pick for Kyle Palmieri who has developed into a 30 goal scorer. Plus the Taylor Hall and Schneider trades and selections of Pavel Zacha, Michael McLeod, and now Nico Hischier has finally brought hope back to NJ.

I agree, compass appears to be pointing up for the Devils, and my point wasn't to not get excited about your teams. that would be douchy and maybe it was douchy anyway, not my intent though. Just saying the NHL draft probably has more misses than most sports.

This draft had been compared with 2012. I thought the first round in 2012 is very mediocre. But look at the 2nd round. If you assume these players were all 17/18 during that draft, they'd be 22/23 now, getting old for hockey prospects.

I don't recognize many of these names outside of Aberg, McCabe, Scissons Tierney, Martinook, Nieves, Collberg, and a couple more, and the ones I do recognize are fringy NHL players or still in the minors.

3rd round was better with players like Vecey (though he didn't sign), Matt Murray, Gostisbehere, Parayko but the bulk of these guys are venturing into hockey obscurity.

so when people say "I love that pick" about a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th round NHL player I feel like "really? this maybe the first and the last time you ever see that guy in a [Canadiens] or plug in your team, jersey."

not to be negative, just shows it's really a long shot for almost any of these guys to make it (even the bottom half of the first round is no guarantee)

I wasn't accusing you of anything. I agree the NHL draft is a crap shoot. It is harder to find a franchise goalie in the 1st round than it is to find a franchise QB in the NFL. I would say the majority of the NHL starting goaltenders are drafting after round 1. The only first rounders currently in the NHL who lived up to their billing as first rounders are Price, Fleury, Schneider, Luongo, Rask, and Dubnyk.

I went to the NHL draft when it was in Hartford, CT It was the 1994 draft, I think the league was trying to save the Whale and thought this would help (just a guess). It was a terrible draft and one of the most boring times in my life at a "sporting event" (though I was young-ish).

Highlight of the draft was seeing the stanley cup and getting a picture with it.

I wasn't as high on Hamonic as some. Fine #3 dman, but I thought he got a bit overrated when he first asked for the trade.

Islanders should parlay those picks into another player, IMO. Unless they 100% know Tavares is signing that extension this summer, they need to act like they only have a one year window, IMO. I think the Islander team as constructed will make the playoffs, but they aren't that far off from being in that second tier of teams IMO.

fan, but I admire the fact he's addressed Galchenyuk head on. And I respect his explanation. I still feel like this approach stifles some young players and it takes a great coach to recognize when it's a net negative and find a way to get the most from the player. Regardless great explanation of the Julien/Therrien way.

I think yesterday was a stunning success for the Rangers. I'm not necessarily crazy about their first pick, but this draft went a long way to replenishing the farm system.

They added a 21 year old puck-moving D-Man. A guy who is a potential all-star if he can overcome some temperment issues.

They also cleared a ton of salary space. Staal likely gets bought out next year when he will only have about 7 million left. If Lundquist continues to decline, he gets bought out the year after that when it will cost only about 9 million spread out over 8 years.

So, finally, they have a clear salary map in place under which they will be able to sign all their own RFAs and keep this core together for the next five years.

Stop the lunacy of constantly trading away top picks for overthehill vets in the vain fantasy that the team is a Yandle or Staal away from a cup.

Rangers are not winning the cup with the Penguins and Blakhawks still in their prime anyway. Think longterm and in three or four years Rangers may be lifting the cup if they get a few breaks. If not, they still should be a top 8 team for quite a number of years.

I don't see how this team takes a logical step forward in the next four/five years in your scenario unless you assume they sign a superstar in free agency with the cap space they have.

This type of move in isolation makes me think Gorton is bearish on the team's ability to win during Lundqvist's last year. I suspect there's another move coming - I'd be surprised if the team thought that way.

I found the urgency with which the Rangers tried to trade Stepan a bit odd. He is 26, has a 2 year NMC, and then a 2 year limited NTC. His production is in line with his contract. It struck me as a bit bizarre without something else coming.

I'm a bit disappointed right now - the roster as constructed is probably not making the playoffs.
Isn't the last point a little unfair though?
bigbluehoya : 6/25/2017 12:32 pm : link
Pretty much any team that has 1/3 of the salary cap unutilized wouldn't look like a playoff team. That's what the rangers are at the moment.

I don't disagree that the Stepan situation felt a little bit forced.
I wouldnt compare this roster to last year
Deej : 6/25/2017 12:37 pm : link
While we have this much cap space. Lets see where it goes. Especially what gets added at C and RD. We're losing 2 of 3 of the problematic Ds, and hopefully Skjei eats more of Staal's minutes, and Staal can get some shelter.
Of course - my point was that there's a ton of work to do.
BrettNYG10 : 6/25/2017 12:41 pm : link
Sorry for being unclear.

There are paths to contention - it's just not as clear as it was three days ago.
I wonder when we will hear something regarding Kovalchuk
Jay on the Island : 6/25/2017 12:49 pm : link
An under the radar team that makes a lot of sense is the Nashville Predators. They just lost Neal to Vegas and are looking for a goal scorer. They are a cup contender obviously but I wonder if Kovalchuk would be willing to go there. If so a 2nd round pick next year or a young defensive prospect is fair. Anything more than that would be great.
I was surprised
pjcas18 : 6/25/2017 12:50 pm : link
they couldn't get more for Stepan.

I always wondered why half the Rangers fans on here clamor to trade Stepan and Nash.

Depending on how they use the space I think they'll miss Stepan.

it's weird, you trade you 1C to free up cap space to then have to go out and get a 1C. Unless the 1C is on the roster who are they going to get that's a) better and b) less expensive?

And throw in a racist defenseman (just taking shots at the kid, I never knew about this until I read it).

I don't see why this was a huge issue. He's 26, has a reasonable contract and plays a game that should allow him to age well.

Im not sure his game ages better than any other player, excepting the Cally/Girardi body sacrificing types.

I assume Gorton just didnt want to risk it. He's really been burdened by Sather's NMCs and trades of 1st rounders in his time as GM.

As for pj's point, there simply isnt an argument that moving Stepan for a draft pick makes us better. This is all about his contract.
I think playmakers who rely on hockey IQ tend to age better.
BrettNYG10 : 6/25/2017 1:30 pm : link
But even if 24-26 are Stepan's peak years as a forward, I don't think his decline is going to be as sharp as the two you mentioned - at least during the duration of his contract. I'd be pretty surprised if Stepan isn't at least a 2C in the final year of his deal, barring injury.
Which type of NHL forward ages most gracefully? - ( New Window )
Deej
pjcas18 : 6/25/2017 1:35 pm : link
I know it was about contract.

My point was on the Rangers Stepan is a first line center.

So you trade him get some salary relief.

And now the Rangers need a first line center.

Who are they going to get to be a first line center than is cheaper and at least as productive?

If that new first line center is not on the roster the Rangers are not likely to save cap space by trading Stepan.

Do they re-sign Zibanejad to be a first line center? I don't think so.

You know how I feel about Kevin Hayes.

I do believe JT Miller could be a 1C, he's got the talent to be one, but I don't think the Rangers believe that, so that leaves your first line center as someone not likely on the roster today.

Unless you think it's Kevin Hayes.
I think Zibanejad can handle 1C minutes and Hayes can handle 2C duties
BrettNYG10 : 6/25/2017 1:39 pm : link
But the Rangers went from a strength (center depth, despite not having an elite one) to a potential weakness.
So basically the Rangers
pjcas18 : 6/25/2017 2:07 pm : link
decided that Zibanejad at 4 years (or so) minimum of 4.5 - 5M per (my guess on Zibby's contract) is better than Stepan at his contract 4 years at 6.5.

I don't think Zibanejad is a bad player at all, but he's one of those big guys who doesn't play big so I'd always prefer the bulldog smaller guys if those are my choices.

Of course you need to wait for the training camp roster, but I feel like the Rangers are going to be a worse team unless they pull off a Duchene trade or sign Jumbo Joe.

an if it's a Duchene trade who do they have to match up with COL who wants a D.

Maybe they have a rabbit up their sleeve with this cap room and make a play for an RFA like Ryan Johansen, Tyler Johnson or Leon Draisatl. Though I don't really know how NHL RFA's work in terms of comp picks, and matching.

I actually think Jumbo Joe could make sense for NYR if we can get it done with minimal term.

I know... old, slow, etc. But he's still a fairly productive player. He's only 1 year removed from a PPG season. Maybe he hit the wall this past season and is finally done - but if he'd sign a 1 year deal (I'd grit my teeth on 2 but consider it if the AAV was fair) I'd be interested.
I'd do two years for Joe
Kyle in NY : 6/26/2017 11:08 am : link
I don't really see where else they'd turn for a top 9 center, barring a trade. I'd rather do Thronton for two years than Hanzal or Bonino for 4-5. And those are just about the only options.
Yep.
arcarsenal : 6/26/2017 11:13 am : link
I don't feel like we really have a suitable in-house option, either. Otherwise, I'd be willing to let a younger kid get some burn. I think for a year or two, Joe could be a solid option. I bet he'd be about as productive as Stepan for a fraction of the cost.

Montreal Canadiens among the teams that pending UFA Karl Alzner is visiting on his tour this week... lots of teams interesting obviously

It's a relatively weak UFA class. Most players of value are going to have 10+ teams after them.

This is the type of UFA class that can set a franchise back. You end up overpaying for mediocrity.
It's just such a Rangers move, though
