Draft being held in Chicago. Will be on NHL Network and NBCSN. Round 1 tonight at 7pm. Remaining rounds conducted Saturday.
Devils have #1 pick. Current thinking is they go Hischier but some smoke Patrick still in play. Unlikely to trade pick and trade down unless bowled over. Some rumors Vegas may try to trade for pick. Devils supposedly very active in trade talks as well. Rumored to be talking to MTL about Galchenyuk and also Hawks about Hjalmarsson/Anisimov. Some thought Henrique may be in play.
Rangers have #21 pick. Not clear who is being targeted but could see them targeting a defenseman prospect. Quite a few should be available around there. Rumors out there Rangers also in on Galchenyuk and are dangling Stepan around the league.
Isles have no 1st rounder. Rumors abound of trying to trade Hamonic for a 1st rounder in a package. Rumors of Flames being very interested.
And if my other options are 2 years 12M for 39 year old Andrei Markov I would take a lot of time to think it over. Probably still take Markov but it's close.
I think it is reflective of the paucity of good free agents, and 20 new NHL jobs opening up.

The case could be made that Smith was our best defenseman in the playoffs. Think I would take Smith in your scenario
That's a slight upgrade for Stepan+the additional prospect/pick & salary relief.
I took Clark's comments to be "coach-speak"
If we don't sign Shatty, what do you do with our new influx of cap space? Extend Mika?

Signing Smith doesn't take us out of the running for Shattenkirk - it's still a possibility, but I'm starting to think Gorton doesn't want to go down that path and I don't blame him. I don't think that's a contract that is going to pan out.
If the goal is to win now, maybe it doesn't matter as much. But we just used a buyout on a blue line player who was more a liability than an asset and still have another one on the roster. I'm not sure we should be in a rush to put ourselves in a similar situation again a few years from now with Shattenkirk.
I suspect there will be an amnesty buyout in 2019 or whenever the next lockout is. I'm not too worried about term on any single deal if we can get to 2020 with a decent player.
Just feels very Satherian - but if it makes the team better for the next 3 years or so and we're trying to win while Henrik is here, I can understand the case for it.

plus Clark's comment that they think Pionk, Bereglazov, and Day could make the team.....yeah, I don't see them spending big for Shattenkirk now.

Agree, I posted the list of top free agents by position.
No one screams must sign, which leaves things ripe for overpays.
I'd probably rather bring in Yakupov or Grigorenko on a PTO
Here is the list again:

2. Vanek
1. Versteeg
C:
5. Derek Ryan (who?)
4. Bonino

G (who cares), no franchise goalies are free agents.

Lots of interest in Patrick Marleau coming off 27-goal season. Toronto, Anaheim, NYR, SJ, Carolina, Nashville, LA all in the mix.

Skjei was by far the best defenseman on the Rangers in the playoffs and 2n and then McDonagh 3rd best is a distant 3rd. Smith over Markov even at their current ages is ridiculous. Only question I'd have is $$$ for Markov. $6M is too much.

Yep. Forgot about Skjei. Damn, he was good.

Thanks.
I think we could do worse than signing Marleau or Thornton short-term. We wouldn't be signing either player to be a centerpiece here and it's not like they couldn't get SJ anywhere - the team is a year removed from a SCF appearance due largely in part to those two (obviously Burns and Pavelski even moreseo)
I don't love the idea of signing older guys in a decline. I just fail to see where we're getting a productive C from right now. Gagner wouldn't be a bad option but boy are the pickin's slim.
Post-season numbers.
Given Lundqvist's age, they need to pick a direction - go for it, or rebuild. Half-assing either direction isn't the route to take right now, where 3-4 years ago I thought it made sense to think longer-term.

You go ahead and build your team based on that and I'll build my team based on other factors.
I'll take Skjei, you take Smith we'll see who wins more.

I think those numbers illustrate why Skjei/Smith make such a good pairing.

Certainly a possibility. I agree that they shouldn't spin their wheels somewhere in the middle.
I still feel like NYR really aren't that far from being a contender but how we address the C position is going to have a major impact on whether we get closer or further away.
I'd prefer to get a younger player - but I also think NYR with the 2015-16 version of Thornton could win. Super risky because Joe will probably fall somewhere between this past season and 2 seasons ago - but there's also the possibility that he's even worse than this past season which would be crappy.
Really hope we can find a way to unload Staal. I don't trust AV to deploy him correctly if we don't.
I still want Kovalchuk - I doubt it's realistic, though.
It makes more sense to me to really try and go for it and win now because we're much closer to that than a team that needs to tear it all down and rebuild, IMO.
Go in now, deal with being awful in a few years and hope we land a generational talent in the draft to re-spark the franchise down the road.
Or we can just sign Tavares as long as he's cool with playing 2nd fiddle to the real JT.
If you get Radulov then Kovy gets more realistic too - even if it's still a pipe dream.
I want Radulov back on the Canadiens, but I'd rather they roll with Drouin and Galchenyuk than give up the significant $$$ on Radulov and lose Galchenyuk.
I don't see them signing both.
and then the Canadiens can make a play for Duchene who may not be special, but he's a legit C on the dots and a 55 - 65 pt scorer on a normal team.
Radulov + Kovy would basically use all available space, flies in the face of getting younger, and would preclude any additional spending on the defense, which I still think is needed.
I'd certainly take him - just going to be a bit costly, methinks.

then why trade Stepan and buy out Girardi? to add a bunch of small questionable pieces?
I would hope they traded their first line center to use that space to sign a big fish or extend people on the team who need to be extended.
Radulov is a finisher with grit and edge. He's exactly what the Rangers need IMO. Team is way too finesse.
The Rangers don't have a ton of holes, they are a contender today, but you need a goalie to win, and after Hank who is it? A guy like Radulov on a 4 year deal that coincides with Hank is a perfect fit IMO.
If you don't go all in now when do you do it? Clock is ticking. Losing Nash next year (probably) - he'll be a FA at least, Hank getting older, McDonagh and Zuccarello UFA's year after that.
Frankly, my view of the cap space is to significantly invest in the defense. Turn the weakness into a strength.
That won't take all of the space. As for the forward group, I still think there's a trade to be made. I could see them trading a Miller or Hayes + for a 1st/2nd line C that is either overpaid on a contract with remaining term or close to UFA and extendable right now.
If no trades, can't tie up a lot of the $ for too long. Will need it very soon for Miller, Hayes, McDonagh, Zucc (or their respective replacements)
I just think that adding guys who are already 30+ for 5-6 year deals is counter-productive.
Seems like no matter how you slice it, NYR short-term contention is most dependent on forwards that are already there taking steps forward.

You know my thoughts on Hayes, I'd trade him in a second, I think of JT Miller like I think of Kreider - should be a star, and if he's not a star it's his coaches fault.
but if you trade Hayes who takes his spot? Is that guy on the roster? If not you're creating another hole.
My thoughts on Radulov were Mika and Hayes are the 1C and 2C (in whatever order) and if Radulov is on the RW you can have a different level of center - you don't need a Crosby with Radulov. He's one of those lefties who prefers RW and he's sound defensively.
he's a very heady player, very physical and gets or sets up the greasy goals, but also has the skills to wow you.
It's really a shame most of his prime was spent in the KHL.
Adding a 3C is a hell of a lot easier if you already have a 1C and 2C.

I'm not a Duchene fan. I think he was something like -35 last year. Practically didn't score in second half.

I don't put much stock in numbers, especially +/-, when your team is that far out of the playoff race that soon and you're the rumor of trade talk the whole second half. I don't have much question about Duchene's abilities.
He's not an elite 1C, but he's at worst a 2C and I'd take him on my team any day. I'd even consider him just for his faceoff prowess alone.
Sometimes people don't realize how crucial having a dominant face off center is, for those late game offensive/defensive zone drops.
Duchene I believe was #1 in the NHL on the dots last year.

I agree about Duchene. As as the Islanders go, he would fit perfectly as the #2 center. Duchene would not need to worry about carrying the team.
However, Sakic is looking to get a package for Duchess as if he is a #1 center.
I didn't blame him at last year's trade deadline. But, this insistence is going to backfire. The longer he waits, the less he will get, imo. Duchene alone will not return assets that will restart a franchise.
I still hope the Isles get Duchene. But the rumored deals are as far as I would go. In other words, Sakic can't have Barzal, Beauvillier, or Ho-Sang.
NHL brass continually tries their best to F-up a great thing. Initially I thought no olympics made some sense, but the more I thought about it, that's strictly an ownership/league view. And the NHLPA should have some say and worst case the league should have used it as a bargaining chip.
The Ilya Kovalchuk situation remains murky, but whispers have grown over the last 48 hours that he'll likely return to the KHL next season.
Slava Malamud @SlavaMalamud 4m4 minutes ago
Today, SKA will make its final push to keep Kovalchuk in a face-to-face meeting. Expect literally all of the money to be thrown at him.
#Isles have reached out to pending UFA Justin Williams, according to his agent. Long list of suitors, would be an interesting fit.
Now that his game 7 streak was broken he'd be of no interest to me.
Pouliot (EDM) on waivers today for a buyout
He's small, but there's a lot of talent there.

I wasn't aware of the NMC. He's a solid second/third liner, if CBJ ate some of that I would have thought there'd be takers.

Someone will sign him. and I agree, he's solid 3rd liner grit/sand paper guy with some skill still.

Saves NYR a little extra cap space, I believe. 2-3M, IIRC.
