NFT: Phone Upgrade Help

Bob in Vt : 6/23/2017 10:20 am
I currently have a Samsung Note 4 and I am looking to upgrade to a newer phone (without spending too much). I like the bigger screen the Note 4 has as it is easier on my eyes.

I am on Verizon and will likely stay with them as they have good service in the area where I live.

I initially looked at the Pixel XL. That looks like a nice phone. Also looked at the Samsung S8 (kind of narrow for the length of the phone), the S8+ (may be reaching levels of too big). I am also looking at the Moto Z Force Droid, as it got decent reviews and is on sale with Verizon right now. The Moto offers Mods that can be attached, but I doubt I would use any of them.

I am just looking for a good smartphone to check things on the web, make calls/texts and play songs (I have several hundred songs on my Note 4). Battery life is important as I don't like having to charge the phone every couple of hours.

Any opinions for someone who is not overly tech savvy ?
In your case I would definitely go for the Pixel XL

i have the normal Pixel and love it
Probably the Pixel

Always on a clean/latest version of Android...but it is not cheap by any means.

I am still on my Nexus 6P...tempted to get a Pixel...but really hard to justify carrying around a $750 phone around. May end up going with a One Plus 5. GSM phones.
I have the S8+

Is the best phone I've ever owned, by far. Best camera on the market, fast, expandable memory on top of the 64GB, great size, huge screen. It's awesome.
Highly recommend Republic Wireless...

...reasonably priced Motorola phones, reasonable monthly rates, though with a cellular-data limit.

We were able to get our family's monthly (5 phones) down from about $350/month (Sprint) to around $100 a month. Huge difference.

Issues with your Note 4 currently? I am still using a Note 4 as well on Verizon. Ordered a new Anker battery off of Amazon for $15 bucks and it's given the phone a second life.

I am in the same boat, the Droid phone you mentioned was on sale at best buy for $5 bucks a month a couple of weeks ago but the specs are aged. Insane battery life apparently.

Pixel XL still pricey, waiting to pull the trigger once it is marked down. Pixel 2 can't be too far off.

Another option could be the Note 7.. apparently Samsung is going to be re-selling all of the recalled phones with a new working battery. Have to imagine it will be priced fairly since the Note 8 is due in August.
An outside the box alternative is the LG V20

The LG V20 is not as sexy is some of the other phones discussed but you can buy it unlocked from B&H for only $449. I am considering it at that price point to replace my Note 4. I like some of the other options Note 8 (soon) and S8+ but at $449 will definitely consider the V20.

Yes, my battery on the Note 4 was dying. When it got to 30%, the phone would just turn off. Also got very hot occasionally.

Bought a new battery a while back and it has really helped. But the phone is beginning to feels its age. I am not in a huge rush to get a new phone, but laying the groundwork for when I do .. which, should not be that far off.

I like the Pixel XL and the S8+, but they are just so pricey. It is just hard to justify that kind of phone for what ?i use it for. That was main reason I was looking at the Motorola

Get a Motorola G5+. $299. Compatible with Verizon. 64 gb of storage. Does everything you need a phone to do if you are not a huge picture taker or gamer.

And if the phone meets and untimely demise at $299 your not slitting your wrists.

It's a good phone and a great value. But it has a smaller screen than he was looking for.

Is either 20/month for 2 years ... or $299 for a 2 year contract.

Does that look like a decent bargain for a 5.5" screen phone ?

5.2 v 5.5 is a quarter of an inch diagonally. considering the price differential...it is worth considering.

The Note 4 has a 5.7 inch screen. And a small increase in diagonal size translates into significantly larger screen area. The Note 4 has a 25% larger screen.
I also have the note 4.

Going on 3 years with it which seems to be unheard of. Had to replace the battery as mentioned above but thats it. Every now and then I'll wipe the cache to keep it fresh. Great phone. I am intrigued with the Pixel xL once (if) the note craps out.
