Nets drafted Texas C Jarrett Allen, dubbed Afro Samurai. Most mocks had him going 15-20, so looks like a good value pick. Very different player than Lopez and a much better fit to the system Nets are trying to run.

Nets second rounder was SF Alexander Vezenkov, stash pick

Looking forward to see what the Nets try to do in FA. Would be nice to add Porter or MCW, but probably a long shot.
Nets have some promising starters
giantsfan44ab : 6/23/2017 10:52 am : link
D-Lo, Lavert, RHJ, and Allen at the 2-5. Don't know what the 2019 draft consists of but a top 3 pick that's ideally a PG could round off a nice core.

by MCW, I meant KCP. I was close.
The Nets had a

really good past couple of days. I can't believe Allen fell that far. He's a lottery pick talent and has pretty big upside IMO.
I like the Allen pick
hitdog42 : 6/23/2017 12:35 pm : link
his upside is large- he fits the mold of needing development and the teams time horizon.

he has a smooth looking shot, he protects the rim, runs the floor, and he can defend the perimeter on a pnr switch... something the team has not had and is vital now.

What to do now? I prefer them to go after Otto Porter... then KCP. porter is a true 3, and 2 way player and fits the motion offense well.

i think going forward they still need that stretch 4/5 type that can shoot from the outside.

a good week for the franchise though
Nets just need to get players
giantsfan44ab : 6/23/2017 12:41 pm : link
That may prevent the C's from getting yet another top 3 pick
After my initial negative reaction to
D-Rod : 6/23/2017 12:52 pm : link
Including a pick in the Russel trade, I've come around to understand and appreciate the trade. It was the type of move they had to make. Allen is also what they needed, a mobile and long big to cover ground on D. He also has a decent stroke that could develop range with time. Picked up a stash with their last pick, just wish they would purchased another pick to obtain another stash

Otto Porter has to be their top target, he checks off all the boxes for them. A long 3 who can shoot and still very young with further development possible. I'd also like then to take a flier on Nicolo Melli as a stretch 4. Don't see the need for KCP.
What's your preferred starting lineup now,

preferred lineup

Lin, Russel, Levert, RHJ, Mozgov
we're crushing the over on this thread
Eric on Li : 6/23/2017 1:41 pm : link
from an overall POV it's hard to be infinitely more optimistic than 12 months ago. Marks/Atkinson have shown that they are the goods in numerous ways - good finds from the D/G league, LeVert was a great draft pick, Lin and Booker were solid FA pickups, Atkinson's system looked great, and even the moves they intended but didn't work out look good (especially the TJ offer sheet).

So for me personally, that's the lens I use when looking at the moves they've made this year. Russell has obvious potential and his performance in his age 19/20 seasons shouldn't go overlooked. He fits the style of what they've been targeting (shooting and passing) and I think he will mesh really well with Lin. Who knows what Allen will be but I like that they went for upside. The Nets are an easy team to take pot shots at but considering the lack of resources the fact that they have at least 2 dynamic young guards Russell/LeVert to build on is extremely impressive. In fact, I don't think it's crazy that by the end of next year people might prefer those 2 guys to Jaylen Brown and Tatum.

The rest of this offseason will be very interesting in terms of how Marks addresses the frontcourt with the $30M in cap room. Mozgov and Booker are grinding vets and RHJ flashed some potential at PF, but they need more there. An Otto Porter max offer sheet would be very interesting.

Agreed. Booker first big off the bench and 6th man is likely a competition between Dinwiddie/Whitehead/Kilpatrick. Still think there's a good chance they add a starting forward allowing Levert to start out as 6th man.
Whitehead
davek3698 : 6/23/2017 3:42 pm : link
Do you feel that Whitehead is a viable option to take the majority of PG minutes once Lin moves on?
i actually like Kj mcdaniel
hitdog42 : 6/23/2017 3:42 pm : link
he has real 3 and d potential... kilpatrick can get cut in my book. plays zero defense and is a bit of a chucker.

Thanks for clarifying! I puked in my mouth when I saw MCW!

Love what the Nets did, although I'm not sure why they felt the need to stash a Euro. They need players. That said, they are FAR better off than they were a week ago.

I imagine Russell will play the point for the most part, Whitehead will be more of a role player.

more like a rodney stuckey unless he really improves his 3pt shot and defense
Was under the impression
davek3698 : 6/23/2017 4:07 pm : link
that Russell morphed into more of a 2 guard in LA - from what I've read, at least. This coming year I would think Lin would remain at the 1, and Russell at 2.

He's not athletic/controlled enough at the 1. Always thought he was going to be a 2 in the NBA. Asking him to guard the elite PGs of the NBA is a losing recipe.
Whitehead and Kilpatrick have their warts but they can both score
Eric on Li : 6/23/2017 4:16 pm : link
and get to the rim so there's a place for them in the NBA off the bench. At least while they have cheap contracts. I think the below would be the current depth chart, but over the rest of the summer I'm sure Marks will deal off some of the extra wings and add another starting player in the front court.

Lin........Dinwiddie....Whitehead
Russell....Kilpatrick...Goodwin
LeVert.....McDandiel....Harris
RHJ........Booker.......Nicholson
Mozgov.....Hamilton.....Allen

Thank goodness the days of starting Randy Foye are behind us. Add Otto Porter to the mix and all of a sudden things are really looking up.

If Porter is added

I would hate for LeVert's minutes to suffer. How would the lineup change then?

That would lock them into their roster with a similar guy like oubre not retainable--- very likely they match but it's not a clear no brainer

LeVert would probably start the season as sixth man with Porter/RHJ being kind of flex forwards. I don't think it would effect his minutes too much though. Lin can opt out next year so if LeVert earns more minutes he's going to get them.

Kelly oubre shot 29% from 3. Porter shot 43%. Oubre may grow into a nice player but 14% difference isn't that similar. There's a much higher chance Washington matches than to either of Johnson or Crabbe from last year.
Nets pace and gameplan
hitdog42 : 6/23/2017 5:03 pm : link
Means nobody is going to play over 30-32 mins a game- so there are plenty of minutes to go around on this team
I would not be concerned about that at all
What About Quincy Acy?
looie : 6/23/2017 9:06 pm : link
Gave them some nice stretches of play last year, and Atkinson loves his work ethic. Doesn't he figure in their future plans?
Kelsto
looie : 6/23/2017 9:18 pm : link
Looks like we hit the over; lots more Nets fans out there than people realize.

Remember, the Nets didn't have a legit PG for 2/3 of last season. If Lin had been healthy, give them 5-6 more wins at least.

The key with this team is patience. Atkinson/Marks are definitely building something good here. There's nothing happening with regard to playoffs for the next 2 years but come the Fall of 2019, I predict things start getting interesting. Slow, steady progress is all I ask.
I think Acy is at the end of the bench or misses the cut altogether
Eric on Li : 6/23/2017 9:48 pm : link
he's a scrapper but limited. Kind of a modern day Scalabrine.
Looie and co
kelsto811 : 6/23/2017 10:27 pm : link
Definitely hit the over! Good discussion guys.

I'm with Hitdog that I think Kilkpatrick could be odd man out, though I know he was the "first" Marks/Atkinson add so there could be some sort of attachment there.

I think Acy has a role here. He's a sneaky knock down shooter from 3 and a hard working guy.

Just like everyone mentioned, would LOVE Porter but I'm not getting my hopes up. KCP has great two way potential so I think he'd be a great add as a backup plan.

End of the day, future looks bright and I'm 100% on the Marks train.
I like what the Nets have done over the past few days
Mike in NJ : 6/23/2017 11:00 pm : link
They took a situation in which they were probably the team with the bleakest future to one in which maybe you can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I think D'Angelo Russell is going to be really good for them, he came on strong last year after the all-star break. I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up 20-6-4 while shooting close to 45% from the field and 40% from 3.

Was reading it this morning. Pretty pathetic. Hope Russell takes that as an extra chip on his shoulder moving forward.

Rodney Pryor has signed with the Brooklyn Nets after going undrafted on Thursday night.

Not sure if they nabbed any other undrafted guys but I expect they did.
The thing that confuses me about Russell is that his age & production
Eric on Li : 6/24/2017 10:00 am : link
is in line with guys he was drafted ahead of and are deemed untouchable. Jaylen Brown is still considered a really good prospect (rightfully so) because he's very young but I don't think he ever even scored 20 points last year. Russell is just as young and his numbers are already very solid with good percentages, and they were trending up at the end of the season. It's good to see that his former teammates seem to feel differently about him than Magic did.
Also picked up Jake Wiley on a 2 way contract.
D-Rod : 6/24/2017 10:05 am : link
Never heard of him before but looking at his highlights and Pryor's, it's obvious they are both really athletic.
Believe they also picked up an athletic PF from Miami
Eric on Li : 6/24/2017 10:07 am : link
named Kamari Murphy. He's got ability but he's very inconsistent.

Two sources told me #Nets interest in JJ Redick is real. Owns $4M condo in Dumbo, worked out w/ @JLin7 could be good influence on @Dloading
fine with Reddick
hitdog42 : 6/26/2017 12:33 pm : link
if that is how they go.

prefer trying to give porter a go at a max--- but reddick would bring shooting and leadership- would rather guys like russell learning from him then like kiltraptick
Reddick would be a nice add but that basically means 3 guard lineup
Eric on Li : 6/26/2017 12:50 pm : link
plus LeVert coming off the bench as a guard as well. Could definitely use Reddick's shooting and leadership, but that would be a tricky lineup to shuffle.
