NFT: Will the Sixers be contenders soon?

LCtheINTMachine : 6/23/2017 12:08 pm
Conventional wisdom is that it looks like the Sixers' plan is coming to fruition. They smartly sat out the LeBron years since no one in the East could beat him anyway. Now they are in position to be the East's best team in a couple seasons when the King declines.

Are Embiid, Fultz and Simmons the next great NBA superstar trio? What does everyone think?
Most likely yes...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/23/2017 12:13 pm : link
But I'd be worry about Embiid. He's a generational talent, but big men with knee/foot injuries scare the hell out of me. Look at Walton.
Define soon
Sgrcts : 6/23/2017 12:14 pm : link
In the next 3 years? Probably not.
I think LBJ is LA bound
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/23/2017 12:16 pm : link
next summer anyways so the East will probably be wide open come '18-'19.
In three years in Philly, Embiid has played 31 games
Greg from LI : 6/23/2017 12:24 pm : link
He wasn't even able to make it through a full college season at KU.
The scary thing
Metnut : 6/23/2017 12:29 pm : link
about Philly is that they have tons and tons of cap room too. If these young players pan out, they could become an attractive destination for FAs.
I guess Lebron is tired of people bringing up his NBA Finals record
bceagle05 : 6/23/2017 12:31 pm : link
so he wants to lose to Golden State in the Western Conference playoffs instead.

As for Philly, thank God they took Okafor over KP, as anyone would've done that year. Fultz/Simmons/Saric/KP/Embiid would be insane. As of right now, Philly, Boston and Milwaukee are jockeying for post-Lebron East supremacy.
Lebron's not going to LA
giants#1 : 6/23/2017 12:37 pm : link
even with him and PG they aren't a lock to be a top 4 team in the West. And the west is much more of a grind in the playoffs. Spurs/Hou and even OKC (assuming LAC get broken up) are all likely better than the #2 team in the east. If he stays in the east, he gets to keep coasting to the finals. Only team that might challenge them is the C's but Ainge seems too in love with "assets" to pull the trigger on a deal for a star (they easily could've topped the Butler offer and kept #3).

Yeah, that's my concern with him too. He's a phenomenal talent, but he can't stay healthy.

That's 31 more games than the other 2 guys in the super-trio combined!

I think there are good odds LBJ does go to LA. 1) He hates Gilbert, 2) He is an entertainment mogul & LA is the place to be for that, & 3) He got the Cavs a ring so mission accomplished.
Who the heck knows?
GiantFilthy : 6/23/2017 12:45 pm : link

On his radio show yesterday, Jalen Rose was adamant that there was NO way LeBron was going to the Clippers. He said he knows some things that he's not going to share - but said LeBron would play in Cleveland next year. He said when LeBron leaves Cleveland, it will be to join the Lakers because LeBron wants to own an NBA team after he retires - he could finish his career with the Lakers with an under-the-table agreement that he would have the opportunity to buy a % of the Lakers organization.
Let them make the playoffs
Vin R : 6/23/2017 12:47 pm : link
first
I could see Lebron moving on.
GiantFilthy : 6/23/2017 12:47 pm : link
What he should do is make it clear that he came back for the fans and citizens of Ohio because they deserved a championship, but he is leaving as a punishment to the owner. Every single Cav fan would understand. They wouldn't like it, but they would understand. Gilbert doesn't deserve Lebron.
Thought the sixers should've gone
giantsfan44ab : 6/23/2017 12:49 pm : link
After butler. Center a deal around Saric, Okafor and Anderson.

I don't think they'll make the playoffs next year but after that they will be playoff regulars. And they still have a lot of assets, guys stashed, and cap room.
Saw the Sixers have sold out all games next season
Rover : 6/23/2017 1:23 pm : link
I saw that, and had a few questions.

First where exactly do the Sixers rank in popularity right now in Philly?
Second, why have the Sixers drawn so poorly for most of their history? Aside from Iverson, they have drawn much worse than the Flyers both in the stands & on TV.
I'm kinda surprised to see this level of enthusiasm.

Is this just a case where Sixer fans are less loyal than Flyer fans, but basketball is just way more popular in Philly?

It always seemed to me the Sixers were the ugly duckling in Philly without a rabid base.
sure
PaulBlakeTSU : 6/23/2017 1:24 pm : link
they've had injuries to the young blue chips pile up, but I would trade places with them in a heartbeat.

You are 100% wrong. The Sixers have a very rabid base but they have been terrible a lot. The Flyers always draw the same South Jersey/Delco white trash automotons whether they suck or not. Respkit?
I went to a Sixers Rockets game
giantsfan44ab : 6/23/2017 1:40 pm : link
this year, primetime Friday on ESPN. Was sold out. There were celebrities all over the place. Atmosphere reminded me of Knicks playoffs games a bit (I don't think anything can top the MSG atmosphere though). But the fans were vibing.

Sixers have the best atmosphere when they are good.

Eagles games always have a Roman colosseum feel to them...
They sure are.

Contenders for the 8th playoff spot in the eastern conference. I'll wait to see them all healthy and playing well before I think anything further than that.
coming to fruition?
BillKo : 6/23/2017 1:46 pm : link
I mean...the team has sucked for how many years? And the purposely tanked for a majority of them, right?

And gone thru two GMs I believe.......

Coming to fruition should be replaced by sucking for a long time.......hardly a plan.

And yet it resulted in a large accumulation of assets.

I follow this type of stuff in sports & it always struck me as weird.
The Iggles are obviously #1 and usually draw very well (though they did have blackouts in the 80s & 90s).
The Phillies, they seem more fair weather, when bad they don't draw that well.
But the Flyers always draw. Granted they never have tanked for a long time, but still.
Then you have the Sixers who don't appear to have ever drawn well aside from Iverson; and even then, it still wasn't sold out year after year & when he left they had thousands of unsold seats at playoff games.

I've felt kinda envious that Knick fans have not had to deal with a dominant, rabid Philly fanbase that Ranger & Giant fans have.

I think karma bites them in the ass for firing hinkie. I doubt embiid ever stays healthy and I just have a bad feeling about Fultz and Simmons. Neither have won at any level.

Fultz never won at any level? Two state championships at DeMatha and a FIBA U18 gold medal don't qualify as levels?

Pray tell, what has KP won?
Let's add in his D.C. Bleu Devils AAU success....

It's good for the league if he goes west. As long as he doesn't goto GS lmao
I hesitate to call it a "plan"
Natek212 : 6/24/2017 10:39 pm : link
Purposely sucking for 5-10 years should not be a "plan."

Unfortunately it is. An I'm still not convinced the Sixers will be much better than the 8 seed this year. Don't see them contending ever.
If you're not winning you're losing...
BurberryManning : 6/25/2017 12:15 am : link
who cares if you lose by an inch or a mile?

As snarky as it sounds, The Process has become a rallying cry for intellectuals because it builds a franchise through logic and a Bayesian rubric and not the eye-test. The fact that the Sixers are the only other team located in New Jersey other than the Giants is a sweetener but it's nice to follow a team that completely bought into math.
