Sounds like another big Arizona trade is in works. Raanta and Stepan likely to Coyotes. 7th overall could be part of it and DeAngelo.
With all the moves the other teams in the division are making, it sounds like we're lagging behind them. We need to keep up if we want to make the playoffs.
Agreed. We now have no #1C (and no fourth line C) and no backup Goalie.
On the plus side, it frees up some salary. D'Angelo is earning less than a million. Either we'll meet Shattenkirk's demands sans hometown discount, or we'll trade for someone like Galchenyuk and extend him and Zibanejad.
RE: Just seems like they should have gotten more for Stepan
if in getting D'Angelo, we don't go after Shattenkirk (the latter is obviously a much better player) and that this is the start of a slow rebuild.
It's hard to tear the entire thing down because we have a lot of guys in their prime, but given the lack of an elite center and an aging star goalie, Gorton might be thinking our window's closed.
DeAngelo is only 21. Have not really seen him play enough to know anything more than that. His suspensions probably lowered his value a bit. Good opportunistic trade.
I like trades with an eye to the future. The Yandel and especially the Staal trade--that's what they have to avoid.
"He's a special young player. You don't get drafted where he got drafted (first round, 2014) as a 5-9, 5-10 defenseman without elite abilities. He certainly has those,'' Keefe said before Monday's game. "He's as competitive a player as I've ever coached. He's got a lot of passion. He's going to be a good player for a long time.''
But along the way, there's been an increasing number of speed bumps.
DeAngelo has four goals, 21 assists and is a minus-7 in 42 games for Syracuse this season. He's missed three games under the hockey euphemism of "coach's decision'' from Syracuse head coach Rob Zettler. For a prospect of DeAngelo's talent coming off well-chronicled maturity issues in juniors, that's an alarming pattern."
#7 and Miller probably keeps them on the phone for another 10-15 seconds OL but probably still isn't enough.
Not gonna happen.
I don't love the return on this deal at first blush, but steering clear of another NMC and clearing $7m in addition to a top 10 pick isn't awful.
Strikes me as a deal you don't make unless there is another shoe to drop...even with a Zibanejad re-sign and the worst imaginable deal for Shattenkirk, there would probably be around $10m in space.
(Disclaimer: I'm not advocating a Shattenkirk blank check by any means, in just expecting it at this point)

I don't know much about D'Angelo
That ARIZ 7th pick is going to NYR as part of a deal that includes DeAngelo. For Raanta/Stepan. May be more
7th pick is a nice bonus. Wonder if Rangers try and ship it back out or use it to move up.
@NYP_Brooksie
As first reported by guys in Chicago, Rangers dealing Stepan and Raanta to Coyotes for 7th overall and 21-yo righty D Anthony DeAngelo

Tough to see Stepan go. Really is the end of an era
Kevin Hayes in the top 6. Give me strength.
None of us are counting on you.

I don't think this seems like a Sather-esque move at all.
Stepan was always overpaid.
Good player who didn't do anything great.
The purge continues... hopefully Nash is next
I think this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue
Here's my guess. Either:
21st Overall packaged for Duchene/Galcnehyuk/MacKinnon
OR
21st Overall packaged for a Dman, sign Thornton.
I'll take the first option
Also, they needed to move a big contract to create working room, and he seemed to be the best chip they were willing to deal.
Now, whom are they targeting at #7?

I wonder how much we'd have to add to the 21st pick to get MacKinnon. Still think there's more left to the guy.
The 21st pick has got to be in play. A few of those names from that last tweet are interesting
Follow Gorton around for 20 blocks today, maybe you'll overhear some names to let us know who he's targeting.

All things being nearly equal, wouldn't mind the highest upside center.

I would be over the moon to get Duchene or Mackinnon. Give them Holden back!

I don't know much about the NHL draft, but 7 is an awfully high pick for a backup goalie and an overpaid no. 2 center, no?
Not gonna happen.
