Sounds like another big Arizona trade is in works. Raanta and Stepan likely to Coyotes. 7th overall could be part of it and DeAngelo.
but he's not a #1 C and I think you had to move on from him. But man is there ever a lot riding on that pick now. Even though Stepan isn't a top flight C, it's not a sure thing to get as good a player in the draft at #7.
Sean Hartnett @HartnettHockey
Rangers are swimming in cap space after the Stepan trade. Roughly $20 million after today's trade and could be about $23M if Klein moves on.
What happens from here before we make any judgements, but Stepan is no #1 center, we didn't have a #1 center on our team and we still don't, that is what we need besides defense. The #4 center position can be filled pretty easily, so that is not a worry, and Zibanejad and Hayes are good #2 and #3 centers. So work needs to be done.
"Sarnia Sting defenceman, Anthony DeAngelo, hasnt played in two weeks. The last time he saw the ice was during a game against the Guelph Storm on Jan. 31. Up until now, the word had been the talented blueliner had been serving a team suspension issued by head coach Trevor Letowski.
Its not the first time a player has been disciplined by a coach and it wont be the last. The situation, though, has been cloudy with Letowski dancing around why exactly hes decided to sit the highly touted NHL draft prospect.
Those clouds parted on Friday, when the Ontario Hockey League announced they had suspended the native of Sewell, N.J., eight games for violating the leagues harrassment, abuse and diversity policy. It's the second time this season the 18-year-old has been suspended for contravening the rule which attempts to keep homophobic, racist, sexist, and the other derogatory language used by small minds out of the game.
The minimum suspension for this infraction is five games. Recently, Windsors Steven Janes was suspended five games under the same policy. In Janes case it was something offensive said to an opponent during a game.
In DeAngelos case, what he said was directed at a teammate. The team is tightlipped about what was said and to whom, but it was bad enough for Letowski to take action without waiting for the league to intervene.
Internally as an organization we made the decision, said Letowski, a former NHLer and graduate of the Sting. It was obviously a serious matter. Any time it involves one of our players there has to be a certain respect level. We respect all of our players and it was pretty serious.
We handled it internally for the first day and then we felt it was important that the league became involved we completely support the leagues decision.
is a solid return for Stepan alone. I'd hoped to get another piece if Raanta was in the trade too but it is what it is. The cap space acquired is also a major asset so we'll see what they do with that. Can't fully judge the scope of this move until after free agency.

All aboard the Joe Thornton train!
It might be, but a team like the Rangers needed an NHL player with upside. And maybe they'll parlay this pick into that.
Stepan's 46th in 5v5 P/60 the past three years (for forwards with 500 minutes played). I don't get the criticisms he isn't a first line center. There's nothing to support that. He just isn't top ten. And his contract was fine.
Reports on Deangelo (on the ice at least) seem pretty positive. Coyotes have a ton of good prospects that I think got us dreaming a bit. But he could slot right in on the 3rd pair right side
The 7th pick is going to get a very solid prospect. And you can parlay the 2nd 1 either for a player or trade it up again either with 7 or alone with another pick.
Stepan has been a good player but I suspect he's not a guy who is going to sustain any high level as he gets older. His speed issues and shot quality are legitimate negatives for him. Rangers got a lot from him. Raanta is house money. He was going to leave eventually as Lundqvist isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
Not great player. Disappeared in many playoff series. Definitely not a number one center so I guess it wasn't his fault that he was played as one. Tired of his no shows in playoff games. Glad he's gone. Good guy, just not good enough.
He'd be a tremendous add for you guys. Played for the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. Some see him as a dark horse to be the best player out of this draft. Has good size, good speed, good shot. Plays C.
Before Devils won the lottery, Glass is whom I wanted.
faster and quicker. Stepan certainly can't help there. Speed kills especially in the playoffs and he was such a non factor. The 2 teams in the finals were probably the 2 fastest teams in the league. They now have a ton of cap space so lets see what they do w/it.

This whole first line center thing gets thrown around constantly with Stepan but all numbers in fact suggest that he was a middle of the pack 1st line center. That's pretty good. And it's what I mean when I say we will absolutely miss him. His game isn't flashy and he's not the most skilled so I think that deceived people. But the production was really consistent. He was an excellent Ranger.
I figure they're shopping that 21st pick like crazy right now. I'd send the 7th pick out too if the deal was right, especially in this draft.
You can get a good player here at 7 guys. I'm telling you. I've been tracking the prospect pool all year once the Devils season went into the toilet early.

Rangers absolutely were one of the fastest teams in the league, even with Stepan. And his playoff struggle this year was way overblown. Far bigger culprits than him in our defeats.
This deal was about a chance to shed cap space, add flexibility, and hopefully add some young assets. Less so an indictment on Stepan as a player
I literally have no idea what the fuck this front office is doing this offseason. Want to rebuild - fine. I did and still do think that group last year was incapable of winning a Cup - and you need to overhaul the locker room after pissing away 3 playoff games... so fine... but i dont understand the execution to date at all.
Lose Lindberg for nothing and get pennies on the dollar for Stepan/Raanta?
Playoffs looking like a long shot absent some significant free agent spending next two weeks.
RE: if this makes a Galchenyuk or MacKinnon deal happen, that's good
I get the frustration from that perspective. But if the deal seems light to us, it probably did to the Rangers too a week ago. They likely held out hoping for more, losing Lindberg in the process. But with today being draft day, had to go with it.
Hadn't thought of it from that perspective, but that is too bad.
As far as playoffs, let's see what else is coming first.
increasingly skating league. Step's a plus defender, that's it. Can't skate, no shot, piss poor on faceoffs, no factor in ramped-up playoffs, zero toughness, liability on power play. No way is he a #1 C. Great time to move on from him.
Gorton must have done homework on DeAngelo whose maturity troubles are bothersome. Will AV even play him? Sounds an awful lot like a Clendenning situation. Not a warm and fuzzy acquisition but the skill and upside are there. Still can't see AV giving him a sniff though.
Is a Staal move coming? Fingers crossed.
Gort trying to right all of Sather's wrongs. Good luck.

Nice player. Good teammate. But on the ice, he did not scare anyone. No opposing coach ever told his team, "We gotta stop Stepan."
With all the other young forwards we have, this is no big loss.

Supposedly Devils are front runners for Galchenyuk. Habs want a win now player in return.
All aboard the Joe Thornton train!

Maybe we flip the pick and something else for Galchenyuk.

Who does NJD have that fits that mold?
Always appreciate these wonderful hockey takes from you!
Stepan continues to be underrated by most Rangers fans. We will miss what he brings

Supposedly Henrique is out there in trade talks. Devils would have to add a prospect but sounds like the Habs want to move Galchenyuk out.
They have quite a few actually Greg. Don't be a clown on this thread. You pollute more than enough already on this board.
If they were so hellbent on this deal, it would have been nice to do it four days ago when they could have then protected Lindberg.

Interesting - I didn't know they were considering moving Henrique.
Should we already pencil him in for the Rangers?

On trading of Stepan, I think it's fair to say NYR were concerned where Stepan's game was trending and his four years left at $6.5M.

NYR look at return as No. 7 overall pick (many good centres available there), talented if not temperamental D in in DeAngelo and CAP SPACE.

What assets do we have to trade for these guys? I doubt the #7 overall pick in a weak draft cuts it.
Agreed.

NYR should offer-sheer Draisaitl.
Agreed.
Aside from offer sheets never happening in the NHL, Drai would probably be $6M per year and losing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks in 2018.
Eh, seems low hit % with the NHL draft anyway, pull the trigger.
