I'm prepping to watch the Amazon series "Long Strange Trip" (once my pregnant wife can stay awake past 8:30)..
I had gone to a bunch of GD shows.. maybe around 30. 1990 was great. I have been listening to a lot of stuff from 1980-1989 lately just to see if it was better.
To my ears, it wasn't.
It seemed in 1990 they hit a 3rd peak, if you will (1970, 1977, 1990).
I have always preferred them from the beginning through 1970. That is the best sound for me.. but damn, 1990 is great.
Damn Brent for dying.
On Netflix there is a doc called "the other one" about Weir. I actually thought that one was better (mainly b/c its shorter I think), but both are really good. I'm not even that into the GD.
Don't mean to be negative, but speaking of eras, am I the only one who wasn't a big fan of Donna Godchaux? I mean when her voice was prominent (late 70s). Nothing personal and I love some tunes from that era, but I didn't miss her when she left..
In the second row. Dead acoustic set, New Riders with Garcia pedal steel, Dead electric set. Pigpen an about 25 minute "Lovelight." Total of seven hours. After those four Port Chester dates, ten years before the Dead played another acoustic set.
And the very next night saw Jefferson Airplane at the Albany State gym, where they set up on wooden risers like they were going to play for a high school dance.
No basketball arenas or baseball parks, thank you.

"We can share the women, we can share the wine."
"The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean."
Larry- Are you familiar with the Relisten app (Mac) and Deadhead Archives (Android) ? No reason to miss the old tapes or anything anymore. The quality of the re-mastered/mixed issued music from the band is a lot better in many cases, but I can't imagine you being disappointed in these catalogues if you are comparing to original tapes.
Pretty much every show they ever played at your fingertips.
Just loved the how much better a guitarist Jerry got in later years, though he was inconsistent, obviously.
He pretty much mastered the fretboard by the late 80s.
I could discuss his playing all day long...what a genius.
No worries, just don't call me late for dinner.
I knew nothing about relisten but I'm going to check it out. I did know about archive.org but hadn't been there in a while. I used to get pretty into my cassette covers and even put all of my ticket stubs on the cassette covers and the boxes I used to hold the tapes. No idea what prompted me to toss those bits of my youth.
I remember the Scarlet-Fire at MSG 1994 ( I think? )..so that's October something or other. It just kept going and Jerry was on FIRE. A nice ovation after the song.. which was rare. I think those there knew that it was something special from Jerry. He must have been lucid.. maybe his dealer was caught in traffic.
I watched the first episode of Long Strange Trip 2 nights ago. Great footage. I'm excited to see more of it.

I listened to those Port Chester tapes until they wore out! Some of the best.
I'm younger for the dead. Started going to shows 89.
I, too, prefer 68-72

Massive amounts of jealousy.
