Do you think the defense will suffer if Eli fires up

wgenesis123 : 6/25/2017 9:14 am
the offense this coming season. I ask because in the NFL it seems like the more you score points the more your opponent opens it up and scores too! Shoot-outs are more common today. I remember Spags comment after the Patriots won that 16th game against the Giants in 2007. He said it felt like we played well on defense but they scored 38 points, that's not good defense. The Giants have some pretty good teams on the schedule this year with a second place finish last year. 11-5 will be tough to duplicate.
More points scored by our offense

Means more risks opposing offense's have to take and in theory our defense should take advantage of those risks with more turnovers, more sacks, etc. More offensive snaps helps big time.
If the offense improves
JerryNYG : 6/25/2017 9:24 am : link
and is able to sustain drives and eat clock, it will help the defense be fresher. Might not be a huge factor early in the year, but by the end it could be significant in keeping guys healthier.

The units don't exist in silos. Success in one phase of the game tends to create more favorable situations for other phases.
The best defense is a good offense.

points/yards over the season, but as others pointed out, overall the defense will be better off for it. Longer, more sustained drives means less snaps for the D. (Hopefully) bigger leads means you could get some key players (notably along the DL) extra rest while also getting more reps for the younger reserves thus helping their development. And also, more points by the offense leads to more risk taking by the opposing offense which hopefully means more sacks and turnovers. If the offense could get some 7+ point leads heading into the 4th quarter, I think you could see both JPP and Vernon with 12+ sacks.
The only reason would be complacency

Two words ---- Prevent Defense

Defense needs to stay aggressive to be effective,
wgenesis123 : 6/25/2017 9:52 am : link
this I believe.
IF the offense plays to it's potential
Matt M. : 6/25/2017 10:11 am : link
teams will be playing from behind more, so the D may give up more total yards. The key will be limiting the points and creating turnovers.
The defense will "suffer" statistically
annexOPR : 6/25/2017 10:28 am : link
when teams pile up yardage / points in garbage time vs prevent defense

If/when this offense improves, this team will be unstoppable
I believe if the Giants offense plays well the defense will suffer
wgenesis123 : 6/25/2017 10:35 am : link
in the stats and we will be hearing the defense regressed. If it all translates to wins, more dancing in the endzone with the new celebration rules, I am looking forward to it.
No.

The more the defense gets challenged the more prepared they will be for the playoffs.

Statistics are for losers
If the Giants can have
giantgiantfan : 6/25/2017 11:22 am : link
a rushing attack yes. The pieces are there, just need the oline to step up and be average.
can answer that if or when ever the O gets up to doing so

still questions on QB and OL and hindering that..still
If opposing offenses
81_Great_Dane : 6/25/2017 1:18 pm : link
could score and move the ball at will against the Giants (or any team) just by deciding to "open it up," wouldn't they do that anyway?
What is scary,
Doomster : 6/25/2017 1:37 pm : link
is if this offense does put points on the board....

If this defense stays healthy, and is playing together as a unit for a second year, can put a legitimate FS on the field, and if Goodson is the "goods", this defense can even be better .....they can take more chances, if the offense is capable of scoring....

Ha! Ha!

I think we should run up the gut 3 times in a row and let the defense win the game.

We should try and score each and every time we have the ball just like the opponent will do. If this defense plays as good as last year then we should be good.
Blackbeard: Of course I am!

I am not saying the Giants should try to score less to help the defense. They will need sustained drives that take time. A good running game is great for the defense. I just think our defense can be better this year and decline in the stats. No one has found cause to address the schedule in the comments so far. I think the Giants will need to be better on both sides of the ball to equal last years 11-5 record. I also think 11-5 wins the division this year. I highly doubt Dallas can match last years record. We shall see!
A rested Defense will be more aggressive
MasherJints : 6/26/2017 12:44 pm : link
It is just the opposite of what has stated here. DC Spagnoulo has a press aggressive ideology instilled by his mentor Jimmie Johnson. The members of the Giants D has stated that they want to be the best Defensive unit in the league. If the Offense produces within their ability the D will be allowed to be aggressive. If the O plays to their potential or exceeds it we can be revisiting 2007 Patriots or 2013 Broncos level of production.

The members of Defensive unit are either in their prime or 1st and 2nd year players. This means that they will have the stamina to go full out and the added rest would play in favor of their advantage. I think this Defensive unit may be the best the Giants have fielded since the days of Parcells and Belichick. With a year of experience together the continuity may pay dividends that we have not yet grasped or hope to imagine.

I think that OL will be the biggest surprise this preseason. If that manifests, the Giants will have the most complete and deepest roster in the NFL. Outside of Eli, Jerry, Marshall and Cromartie the rest of the squad will be 28 or younger. Eli may have the chance to go out like Elway because the Giants Defense is mostly signed for the next 4 years.

So I believe a rested Giants Defense will bring devastation and reckoning to the their opponents. It is going to be an amazing campaign. The roster has playmakers everywhere at the skill positions, if the OL produces as anticipated the running game will flourish making the Offense extremely difficult to contain. Giving Eli a running game, protection and the most dynamic WR/TE corp in the NFL will provide us with an MVP caliber season.

Giants!, Giants!, Giants! #5 in the case
24-30 PPG
Bluesbreaker : 6/26/2017 12:59 pm : link
will generate enough wins to take the division we can't
expect the defense to carry us again into the playoffs
If the line plays better than average we will be there
in the end . We have to increase PPG .
not if
BlackburnBalledOut : 6/26/2017 3:37 pm : link
they control the clock on drives. they cant just score quick and throw the defense back out there. they have to run the ball better if the offense is going to get better. keep the D fresh and control the clock.

quick scoring drives are great, ill take one anytime but often quick scoring offensive powered teams tend to leave their defense worn out. think about the 2015 Giants or the Chip Kelly Eagles.

It's a fascinating study
NINEster : 6/27/2017 2:58 am : link
but it appears to me that without having a literal pro bowl roster for a team, you cannot sustain a high flying offense and an elite defense at the same time.

Whether through psychological effects and/or conditioning, it can't be done, at least not sustained for a season.

You can get a blowout or two but your top 5 defenses in 2017 most likely will be below top 10-15 in offense.

Did anyone else think the full subject line was going to read...

If Eli plays well...
EricJ : 6/27/2017 8:30 pm : link
that helps our defense. Some of you guys are discounting the fact that we will likely be winning the field position game if Eli is playing well. We will not be giving our defense a short field as often as in past years.

Not to mention the fact that the opposing offense will have to get one dimensional to stay in the game making it even easier for us.
