Will we ever see the day when Mac pulls Eli out of a game?

River : 6/25/2017 10:57 am
I am not talking about with a big lead for garbage time.
It seemed in the Coughlin years this would never happen other than injury. This is not Coughlin. Coughlin and Eli were tied together and now McAdoo is not a rookie coach anymore and he is not tied to Eli the same way. Bringing in the completion at Back Up QB says a lot. If Eli is not executing the plays and playing good enough to win will we see Mac pull him out of a game? Would he have the guts to do it to the best QB this team has ever had? Would the Fans accept it as just part of the game? Would it be crushing for Eli? Would the Owner who is a Manning fan except it? The head Coach can do what he wants but would this turn the team on him? Its said Eli had some influence in Mac getting the head coach opportunity would he dare do it?
Up to this point, we've never had a backup good enough

for this to even be discussed. And I doubt that changes with Geno Smith

Now, a year or two from now, if Webb develops as the Giants apparently think he can, I'd say it's not beyond the realm of possibility. McAdoo did seem to reveal at times he wasn't happy with Elis play
Do you want him to?
WillVAB : 6/25/2017 11:51 am : link
Seems like an odd question.
No I don't ever want to see it
River : 6/25/2017 11:55 am : link
but its a fair question. Will we see it?
Mac seems like a aggressive coach.
Great question

I think about it a lot. But in the absence of any other cause for Eli to take a step back it would be depressing. And if it did happen and Davis Webb came in with the same OL, weapons, and playbook and excelled where Eli didn't it would lead to some necessary revisionist history.

I would say most of us don't want that to happen.
I've seen plenty of times

where the QB stinks it up for 3 quarters then catches fire in the 4th. You don't take him out of the game unless the backup is very close in talent level.

Eli's not coming out unless he's injured.
When you take out an all-star QB, who is also the leader of the team,
PatersonPlank : 6/25/2017 12:35 pm : link
it sends a very strong message. You need to be careful because it can't be undone. You only do it when you are committed to making a longer term change. This isn't a situation where there are two QB's roughly the same, and some players like one or the other. I don't think we ever see Eli get pulled. If they want him out they will talk to him, and then fake an injury or something like that.
Eli needs to come out of games. But only when the outcome
Jimmy Googs : 6/25/2017 12:38 pm : link
has been determined.

I know they play too many close games, but there are times and circumstances when Webb should be in there to close them out. Particularly if losing.

Every snap helps.

Gosh, I hope so.

We haven't had a good QB controversy around here in a long time.
I would say there is a greater chance that

Benny gets pulled before Eli. Ben is on year 2 of a 3 year contract. Despite our record last season and an incredible turnaround on defense, the front office can't be happy with the performance of the offense. With this past off-season and the offensive additions, there will be no excuses if the offense doesn't get back on track.

Will ownership persist with Ben as a lame duck coach? Will perhaps ownership see the over-performing defense and elevate Spags to HC - dismissing Ben and hiring a legitimate OC?
Yes
NoPeanutz : 6/25/2017 1:23 pm : link
When the Giants sign a backup better than Eli, maybe Tom Brady or Drew Brees.
That's only going to happen
81_Great_Dane : 6/25/2017 1:24 pm : link
if Eli is stinking up the joint. And that doesn't just mean throwing interceptions -- a lot of interceptions aren't on the QB. It means mental errors, bad decisions, fumbles... Or it means Eli tries to play when he's sick or hurt and can't perform.

That's likely to happen sooner or later. But what's the hurry?
Eli is top 10 all-time in passing yards
Vanzetti : 6/25/2017 2:27 pm : link
So, think about other guys who at the top of the list and who came out for the backup.

The only one I can really think of is when Bledsoe was benched for Brady.

I think Deberg might have gotten benched for Montana but that was before my time.

Montana and Brady are probably the two greatest QBs of the modern era. Even Favre did not get benched for Rodgers.

So, if Eli were benched, it would be because Davis looked like a great QB. And it would be permanent and Eli would likely be let go. So, in other words, Mac would not bench Eli to send a message and put him back in the next game.

Agree with Patterson

we won't ever see Eli pulled unless we don't plan on having him return the following season.
How in the world..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/25/2017 3:43 pm : link
is a more "aggressive" coach likely to pull his starting QB?

You'd pull your long-time starting QB if you are pretty much any type of coach for only a couple of reasons:

- It is a blowout in either direction and you want the backup to get work
- The QB was injured earlier in the game and is ineffective upon return

It is highly doubtful you'd see the QB pulled to give the backup a chance to have a comeback. Ask yourself when have you seen that happen before?

Mac being "aggressive" or not really has no bearing.
Nobody replaced Peyton during any game
Doomster : 6/25/2017 4:18 pm : link
his last season, and there were plenty of opportunities to do so.......

If not for that defense, he would have been replaced....
On some other teams
ThatLimerickGuy : 6/25/2017 5:04 pm : link
It could definitely happen.

On the Giants? No shot. As said here earlier Eli is in there until the game is decided either way and if there is a change to be made for the next week a phantom injury will be used to make the change.
You do recall that Mac was the offensive coach prior to his head coach
Giant John : 6/25/2017 5:58 pm : link
So I would argue there is a strong relationship in place. That said if any player is playing that bad the coach can replace him. I don't see This happening with Eli any time soon.
You realize labeling Eli as the greatest Giants ever

Is an opinion.......right?
Agree with FMIC
Bluesbreaker : 6/26/2017 1:04 pm : link
barring injury or a blow out it will be Eli maybe a
year or two if he just loses the arm strength all together
it would have to be a very obvious situation over enough games that Eli isn't getting it done . 3 or so years from now I wouldn't be shocked to see it . If Eli stays healthy
Did that thought just pop in to your head?
