the subject matter or even the writing to be annoying. But it encourages reading (something many kids have a hard time doing, let alone enjoying) and creative thinking.
Perfect example is that 9 year old across the street from me. She's dyslexic and can't read well but she trucks through it because of the subject matter and once done with a book, will listen to it again on the audio book finishing it up with the movie.
I've known her family for about 1-1.5 years and its a pretty cool thing to witness in a fairly short amount of time.
Me and Mrs gidiefor always brought them in two the day they came out so we could both read em together -- have read all of them many times - and of course the movies are a treat as well and we watch them often.
Great stuff -- wish there was more!
RE: RE: Started reading these recently with my 7 year old daughter...
and the books are really terrific for kids. My daughter is totally enthralled with them. I finally get what all the buzz was about :).
PSA: The later books in the series get darker and deeper -- probably too much for a 7 year old.
LOL, well the first book starts off with the kid being horribly abused by his family and then he finds out his parents were murdered when he was a child, and ends with the murderer trying to kill him as well.
Along the way the kids get attacked by giant trolls, three headed dogs and nearly killed during a sporting event.
the books do but it's already in the context of what Tesla describes. The movies start out pretty light hearted and then escalate to being much darker by Azkabhan.

I would argue that Chamber of Secrets is pretty damn scary. I mean Harry fights Tom Riddle and a fucking basilisk. That's pretty dark!

How much worse do the other books get?
Well, major characters are injured seriously, tortured and killed. It's one thing to know Harry's parents died sometime in the past; you never got to know them as characters. Imagine how your daughter might react if Ron, Hermione or Dumbledore were killed in book 4 or 5.
Really, as the characters get older and more serious, so do the books. The first book has a few tense moments, but mostly Harry and friends have the time of their lives. Book 2 isn't much different. But starting with Book 3, things gradually get deeper and darker.

Ron and Hermione would be dead by book 3.
Agreed. What a bunch of shit. Something that got generations of kids to put down their game controllers and read books. What a waste.
If that's the kind of shit they're going to read, they were better off playing the games.
Allegedly grown adults now run around like imbeciles, holding fucking brooms between their legs to sort of play a mythical game that involves flying. Magical fantasy horseshit is the lowest form of fiction.
Rowling's writing got better as the series goes along. They're good literature anyway you slice it and they deal with many social issues as well as having the characters grow into adults. The depth and breath of her work rivals Tolkien (and has led to an expansion of Her wizarding world ("Fantastic Beasts which was pretty good).
Agreed. What a bunch of shit. Something that got generations of kids to put down their game controllers and read books. What a waste.

You really have a rough go with the "live and let live" thing, don't you...
What you're taking about before trashing it. The concept of slavery is delt with in the 4th book, terrorism by the 5th. The most valid criticism you could make is the books become more adult as they go along. Other than that you are way off base
I have a very hard time picturing any competent parent telling their child to put down a book to go play video games.
There's a whole lot of crap I'm going to mentally make fun of my kids for reading but it would never be to the extent where I'd rather them go sit in front of a screen.

That's a bit of a "Get Off My Yard" post. I'm not one for dressing up as a wizard (I prefer being a Union soldier), but why can't people do what they want? I mean is it any different than Trekkies, Star Wars geeks or Lord of the Ring nerds dressing up?

Maybe so but we'd still have 5 or 6 years before book 2 comes out
a fraction of the imagination that J.K. Rowling has. The books were excellent and I read them as an adult (my stepson is still too young for them). I have reread each of them as well a couple of times. Her imagination is captivating and, though dark at times, I am glad the series has inspired millions of kids to read.
The movies I was rather disappointed with but did watch them all as I was curious how they would represent certain elements of the books onscreen. I don't believe they were nearly as good as the original material. They left out so much, though I know there was only so much they could do with a standard movie length ti fit it all in (and not make most of them two-parters).
As a voracious reader, I am grateful for J.K. Rowling.
as someone mentioned above, is the way they get deeper and darker as they progress. I started reading the books at age 10, and around 16 or 17 when the final book came out.
Agreed. What a bunch of shit. Something that got generations of kids to put down their game controllers and read books. What a waste.

The Harry Potter books had no real impact on reading trends among children. They got kids to read inane Harry Potter books and....well, not much else.
Quote:
But in keeping with the intricately plotted novels themselves, the truth about Harry Potter and reading is not quite so straightforward a success story. Indeed, as the series draws to a much-lamented close, U.S. statistics show that the percentage of youngsters who read for fun continues to drop significantly as children get older, at almost exactly the same rate as before Harry Potter came along.
