NFT: Workout times- Morning or Night

GMAN4LIFE : 6/27/2017 2:24 pm
Question for you all- Looking for some advice. My current workout schedule works like this. Mondays- wednesdays, and fridays are weight training with 20 minute low impact spinning. Days in between are spinning classes for 45 minutes. I take off on Sundays. Now i wake up everyday to workout at 4:30am and then workout in my basement. I start working out at 5am as i give myself those 30 minutes to wake up. I can only workout til 6am.

I love working out in the morning but I believe it takes alittle toll on me as i have to sleep at 9:30 -10 to at least get 6 hours of sleep. Now i can do my exercises right when i get home around 6pm but then i dont want to be wired and not be able to sleep decently at night.

thoughts?Workout in the morning or night?
I prefer the morning.

Just get it over with. And if you wait until the evenings, things can pop up that can sidetrack you.

That said, if I had a beer or two too many the previous night, I'll wait until after work to workout.
sounds like you have a good routine

It really depends on what works best for you and fits your schedule.

I do it in the late afternoon/early evening now. Before I worked from home, I would go to the gym before work but it just makes more sense for me to do it later in the day now.

There are benefits/drawbacks to both.

I'm def a morning person. 90% of my exercise is running, and with the weather in DC being awful in the summer time, the earlier I can go the better.
As stated in the other workout thread...

I usually workout between 8 or 9pm depending on when my kids fall asleep. During my deployments, perfect time for me was working out at 2 or 3am when I was done with my shift. The gym was quiet, and the heat was bearable. I've always been more of a night workout person and not really early in the morning.
I love working out in the morning; however,

I have a problem where I wake up before my alarm. So a 4:30 wakeup call, my body would wake me up around 3:30 in anticipation of getting up on-time.

I have switched over to working out after work, which has been better.

The sleep deprivation was really killing me the opposite way.
I used to be very vigilant about getting up at 4:30

to get to the gym before work, but it has gotten much harder as I've gotten older (turned 56 last month). I'm able to sneak out at lunch to get a quick workout in, but I'd still rather do it in the AM.

... for time/convenience and getting it out of the way for the day. But I am stronger later in the day. Ideally if I could do it during lunch hour would be ideal... but tough to do that with the length of my workouts.

My clock is set for 4:00a, but I usually wake up between 3:00 and 3:30a. The gym is always quiet then, and its the only time a day I am not receiving orders from every direction.
5:10 wake up...

been in this routine for about 6 months now - problem is even on weekend with a few adult drinks the night before I wake at the same time regardless of how many hours I sleep.

Yeah its pretty brutal since you are counting on that hour of sleep. If your doing low carb, apparently adding some carbs into the diet can really help with sleep if you have been doing a low carb diet for a while.

I feel much better about exercise now that I do it after work.
I workout after work

At 4:30 PM.
After having the luxury of working out at 2:30 with my old job, I played around with workout out in the morning but just have stuck to this.

What sucks about 4:30:
-WAY WAY more crowded. At 2:30 the gym is peaceful, you have JUST the right amount of people. Even if you don't have to wait to get on the equiptment, I just hate the hussle & bussle of the crowd. The gym is less "zenful."

-Usually by this time of day I am tired. Taking a caffeine based pre-workout does the trick EXCEPT I am sensitive to it, & it leaves wired the rest of the night. So it kinda sucked being groggy in the morning, then when you get home & finally have a chance to lay down, being hyper.

What sucks about the morning is I prefer lifting after I have had a couple of meals in me; and the gym is partially social to me, it is nice to go there at the end of the day and see people.
If you go in the morning, you have to rush to get done & in the office in time.
I'd love to have something I can take pre-WO

Nearly every successful person I know gets up early. You've got a good thing going. Why mess with success?
