NFT: Francesca - Christie?

Samiam : 7/8/2017 12:17 pm
I know I'm in a minority here but I'm a fan of Francesca and am sorry he's leaving in December. One of the reasons is that I think the alternatives are either bad or suck. Evan Roberts & Beningo are bad. Michael Kay and his group suck. Steven A Smith really sucks. According to today's Star Ledger, Christie is a strong candidate. Apparently, when he subs on the station, ratings are good or very good. He's got a name & a personality and that's part of the draw. I can ignore the fact that he's a Cowboys fan but the guy is a complete asshole and a bully and a general all around douche. (I know some of you may think that of Francesca.)

I think if Christie got that job or any job on the Fan, I would boycott the station after being a regular listener since day 1 when it started . Do you feel like this or am I in the minority here as well?
No. He's the same arrogant SOB that Franscesa is.

From Governor of NJ to Presidential Candidate to Trump Transition Leader to .....WFAN. Downhill all the way to the bottom.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
It would be such a stupid decision

I cannot imagine there are many people who will run to their radios to hear Chris Christie's take on yesterday's sporting events. Besides being immensely unpopular, why would anyone care what Chris Christie thinks?
Nope,I'm w/you

As a retired NJ educator,I can't find one thing nice to say about the Beach Blob!I won't watch/listen to Boomer & Carton when he subs for Boomer. He makes me physically sick!

Should be the new Mike & The Mad Dog.

I wouldn't just boycott the station
Gatorade Dunk : 7/8/2017 1:19 pm : link
I'd boycott every one of their sponsors too.

Chris Christie is not just a waste of space, he's a waste of oxygen.
from a purely business standpoint

it may work. The audience for sports talk radio is probably a lot different than it was 20 years ago. Satellite, podcasts, the internet etc. have siphoed off a lot of listeners. I'd bet the demographics are now a lot like those for other talk radio. I could imagine Christie appealing to the same audience just with sports themes. Won't be my cup of tea but then again I am one of those who has turned the radio off.

afraid jcn is right, and moespree also ("it would be such a stupid decision") in a way the latter perhaps did not intend. Other than Francessa, with all his arrogance and refusal to acknowledge what he does not know, I feel entertained, because his knowledge and points of view I find interesting.

WFAN has been making stupid decisions for years now by hiring the hosts that they have. Other than the Sunday AM baseball guy (superb, and very good guests), and Roberts, who I think has ok commentary--pairing him with Beningo is a little along the lines of pairing McDonough with Girardi, an anchor--the rest of them are loud-mouth wannabe Francessas.

The last 5 days of Boomer & Carton were great. Carton was on vacation so we didn't get 2+ hours of soap opera. For 2 days we had Boomer & Phil-and boy, they were great. They didn't just talk football but all sports.I was impressed w/Phil's overall sports knowledge! Last 3 days of this week we got Mark Malusis & Kim Jones. They work very well together as a team, very knowledgeable on all sports(I wish Kim were back on YES) & as an added bonus,Minko did the updates.Five days of real sports talk & a large % of the phone calls both teams received was about how much people were enjoying their presentation. But, they'll probably build a bridge w/Fucking Christie because of his controversy & overall ability to be an asshole!
I find it hard to believe ratings are good

when Governor Jabba sits in. I don't know a single person who likes when he's on the air, and most people I talk to about it say they turn off the station when they hear him.
Francesa is an arrogant blowhard
mfsd : 7/8/2017 2:39 pm : link
but I still tune in now and then to listen to what he has to say - sometimes for the unintentional comedy factor, but still

I will never, ever, tune in a single time to listen to that fuck Chris Christie were he on the air. Whenever he's been a guest I change stations
I predict Christie will get great ratings
LCtheINTMachine : 7/8/2017 2:58 pm : link
He's an arrogant blowhard like Fatcessa and people love to hear these fools bloviate for some reason. In other words, a monkey could do the job and Fatcessa and Christie both fit the bill.

Francessor is terrific, not low brow frat house grab ass, pretty knowledgeable about most sports, always entertaining. He makes it appear much easier than it actually is.

Not sure why anyone would listen to Chris Christie. His act is so tired and based almost entirely on pugnacious bluster. "You don't like the Cowboys?!" "Then root for the looser Jets. They were pathetic when I was a kid so I rooted for the Cowboys. Okay!?" "You don't like me, don't listen. Okay?!"

Ah, okay, I won't listen.

I listen everyday I use to like joe and Evan but the last few years they have become unlistenable. Evan has to get the Mets into everything and joe has to make it known he's a miserable Jet fan it is painfully annoying.

"30 for 30" episode that talks about the years that Francesca and Russo had their radio show together. If they aired it, I missed it but, in the promo Mike talks about turning into a bit of an asshole when he first became successful (and a celebrity). Looking forward to seeing it in a rerun.
I'll give Christie a shot
djm : 7/8/2017 8:49 pm : link
But from the little I heard he's just another talkie looking to stir shit up. He's not a dumb guy by any stretch and I'll acknowledge he knows sports but he's not objective.

To make matters worse the guy is just impossible to like. I'm not even talking about his Dallas loyalties which in itself is enough to hate the guy. Christie personifies dooshbaggery.
One other thing about this...
trueblueinpw : 7/8/2017 9:34 pm : link
What's it say about Chris Christie that he goes from being a serious candidate for President and being twice elected NJ Governor to a possible contender for a drive time sports radio spot? Sure, it's a cherry gig that most guys would kill to get, but, after being Governor and running for PotUS? This guy's really fallen down.
If he gets Trump as a guest

According to Carton and his producer, Christie's appearances are highly rated. But it is amusing how tone-deaf they can be. And don't forget, CBS Radio chose David Lee Roth to succeed Howard Stern on K-Rock (whether that was to give a buffer before O&A took morning drive is debatable).

Christie sees the success Ed Rendell has had in the Philly media
GeofromNJ : 7/9/2017 4:47 pm : link
and figures he can do at least as good, if not better. Besides, his political career is essentially over. His only chance at the presidency lies in winning a NJ Senate seat and that is unlikely to happen anytime soon. And his value as a lobbyist is limited due to very bad approval numbers. So it's between house closings and sports talk radio for the "big" guy.
I've actually stopped listening
dank41 : 7/10/2017 6:54 am : link
to WFAN almost completely since they have put Christie on air. Some mornings I turn it on and hear his voice and I just cringe.

I'm also sad Mike is leaving. He gets a worse rap than he should, it can't be easy being on radio for 5 hours by yourself and take call after call. We are taking that for granted right now, because the next show probably won't take nearly as many calls and will probably try to fill time with stupid things (like Boomer and Carton do)
I don't listen much
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/10/2017 8:16 am : link
to WFAN anymore and can only tolerate Mike on limited occasions, but if they hire Christie as his replacement, I'll never listen to WFAN again.

I agree with the above poster who says that hiring Christie says more about the average listener.

Did you see the cover of the post? Who thinks of that stuff.
There will be a segment of their base that, yes,
Mike in Long Beach : 7/10/2017 11:09 am : link
will not listen if Christie is one. But I think there'll be a (much) larger segment of people tuning in out of both hate-listening and sheer curiosity. I think from an integrity standpoint it's an undeniably lame move if it happens, but you can't deny their ratings will be higher with Christie than they would be with anyone else.

Part of me thinks with that, WFAN's best move would be to have Christie opposite a credible radio host. Maintain a smidge of integrity while padding their bottom line.

Why would you not believe that? Radio stations have PPM's that give them that data. What would be the purpose of making it up?

Because while Christie's popularity is way down across the board there is a group of rabid Christie haters, not that big but very vocal, who will believe anything written about him that's negative. Even something as far fetched as manufactured ratings from an apolitical organization.

What they seem to forget is that being as good as or better than "Bro, bro, bro, Jets, Jets, Jets Bro, bro, bro Mets, Mets, Mets" is NOT that high a bar to clear.

Went to a BBQ yesterday and had the same conversation. Kim and Evan is the best possible outcome - an even-keel approach to Giants/Jets and then Mets/Yankees. Which is probably why we'll get Christie-Beningo.
