History

RIP Eddie Crawford member of the 1957 Giants
"Following his collegiate career, Crawford played in the North-South Game in Miami, Florida, and was then drafted by the New York Giants of the National Football League. He was an instant success with the Giants in 1957, playing first team as a defensive back and flanker on offense. However, the nagging shoulder injury from his college days limited his pro football career to that single season, even though Giants assistant coach Vince Lombardi was encouraging Crawford to return in 1958."

Traina's article on Chad Wheeler is insightful...
Dan in the Springs : 7/10/2017 10:10 am : link
and also raises some lingering questions I've had about our OL evaluations. I have been so curious as to how this kid has appeared to become the primary backup to Flowers. Traina points out that he struggled against Schwan (which also helps explain his positive reports coming out of camp - different subject). She also tries to explain how he was available despite an impressive resume.

What I don't get is how he gets a shot at LT while a kid like Pugh, who the Giants felt a few years ago could play the LT position, or a kid like Bisnowaty who they traded up to draft, hasn't. From what I can tell Pugh has never really taken any kind of significant practice snaps at LT since he was drafted. Some would say that he struggled at R. I thought while he had a sub-par soph year there, his rookie season at RT he might have been our best OL. For some reasons it's as though the coaches have simply disagreed with the scouts and GM on his ability to play LT.

Now we read about Biz and how he has to re-learn everything about blocking from the right side. Why the disconnect? I'd not be critical except for the fact that our OL coaches haven't exactly established a record of successfully developing young players at their position. Does a player have to first be successful at the right side before they are given a shot at the left? Why would that be?

I just feel that something is very wrong here. Hmmmm...
The OL is a funny lot isn't it?
SGMen : 7/10/2017 10:21 am : link
Right now, I think I have it as:

Flowers-Pugh-Richburg-Jerry-Hart
(Pugh)-(Jones)-(Jones)-(Fluker)-(Fluker/Bisnotoway)
PS: Wheeler, at least 2 others (Desmer?)

We may carry 8 OL's with all active on gameday's?
Dan
Klaatu : 7/10/2017 10:29 am : link
Wheeler has a very extensive injury history and looked pretty bad at the Combine. Boylhart may have given him a 1st round grade, but even he admitted that he probably wouldn't get drafted until the third day, which is when most of the pundits had him getting drafted (if at all).

I said in another thread that Wheeler is the type of prospect the Giants have not been able to develop in recent years. My hope is that with the new S & C staff, along with the new O-Line coach, that trend will get reversed.

Also, I wouldn't read too much into who's playing LT with the second team in the spring. Patti (not the guy who wrote the article) surmised that if the Giants had to replace Ereck Flowers the job would go to Justin Pugh. I don't know that I buy that, though. I think a guy like Biz can take the swing-tackle job if he doesn't beat out Hart for the starting RT job.

Dunker not Desmer on the PS along with Wheeler.

I didn't forget Adam Gettis but am thinking he may be the odd man out in a numbers game. However, I also know he has some versatility inside. Tough call on how this one will play out. But I do know that we really need Bisnotoway needs to work out at OT for depth and I do believe he will. Four year starter being coached up by Solari, I like his chances.
It is fair to say Dallas will be missing CB Carroll, LB Wilson, DE
SGMen : 7/10/2017 12:13 pm : link
Irving for the first game due to suspensions. 3 key defenders out on a team with a lot of new defensive faces.

The Giant offense, assuming we get out of camp very healthy, should absolutely FEAST on opening day. I think we should do to Dallas what they try to do to other teams: run the ball, throw to the open man, keep moving the chains and score TD's in the greenzone now that we have big man Marshall; TE's Engram, Ellison, Adams; and, improved OL play. Don't give the Cowboys many opportunities; stuff the Cowboy run game and make Prescott beat you.

Thanks Dawg..I thought backup tackle Steve Wright (deemed good enough to start for most teams) of the Packers would be a steal..He was 27(?) at the time and young enough to make an impact, imo..I believe he was involved in the Francis Peay trade (I was glad to see him go)..Peay actually played pretty well for Lombardi iirc..Of course, who didn't?

My concern is less about who's lining up at LT in the spring generally and more about how the Giants determine who can or cannot play the position. I don't think Pugh ever got any kind of significant practice snaps at the position. I wonder what we would think of Flowers had he been forced to go to RT as was the plan at the time. Would he ever have gotten a shot at LT or would he have been forced inside?

Think about the Giants approach - it generally is as follows: Draft a player who has lots of experience at LT, declare him following the draft as capable of playing LT, put him at RT to practice and learn, and never really give him snaps at LT. Biz was a possible LT and is having to learn RT first, which has been described as awkward and similar to learning to write with your other hand.

Can you imagine this approach in baseball? Kid has a natural swing, we think he could be a great left-handed hitter in the park, we're going to start him out hitting only right-handed to see how he does. If he works out well there we'll have developed a great switch-hitter. If not, we'll teach him to bunt.

Simply ludicrous and I know the analogy isn't entirely correct, but the point is that the team has struggled to develop talent on the OL and you have to wonder what is more difficult - helping college LT's learn to play LT in the pro game or trying to teach them RT first.

LT Erek Flowers was young & "raw" when we took him in the first round. He was going to learn RT as a rookie before LT W. Beatty tore a pectoral muscle and was out for the year, forcing Flowers to LT before he was ready. The kid held up even with an ankle injury.

However, with a new OL coach in Solari, he didn't develop year #2 as expected. You may even say he may have regressed some. But I think the reason he didn't develop is that as a young man he didn't put in the required effort to learn and get better, or so the whispers were. This off-season, he appears to have put in the effort both in the gym and elsewhere.

If both Flowers and Hart improve from "bottom quarter of th league" bad to around middle of the pack or slightly better (remember, they are but 23 and year 2 of coach Solari's style...) this offense will really click.

We haven't drafted enough OL "high" for whatever reason and the lower round guys never developed over the last bunch of years. This year, I think we see improvement from everyone outside of Jerry who is who he is. Pugh just needs to stay healthy is all and we'll be fine. Heck, they all need to stay healthy really.

Go Giants!
