NFT: Home Run Derby Thread - 8p ESPN

B in ALB : 7/10/2017 1:39 pm
As a Yankee fan you have to be pretty damned excited for this one tonight. Two Yankees - El Gary and Aaron Judge are in the contest. El Gary has a pretty big challenge facing off against the defending champ. And Judge is up against a powerful hitter in Justin Bour.

Wouldn't be surprised if more people are watching the HRD than the actual game tomorrow night.

Would love to see a Stanton vs Judge final (ideally, a Sanchez vs Judge final!).

Check out El Gary's custom bat he'll be using tonight.

ALL..

Should be fun. Regardless of how he performs, Aaron Judge is taking center stage these next 48 hours. ARod interviewed him for the pre-game show tomorrow night, and I'm sure he'll be a main focus of the game broadcast.
If

Seems a little homer-ific. An exciting player - but so is Giancarlo Stanton, who is playing in front of his homecrowd.

In fact - GS is probably the best comp to Judge.
The Marlins have a home crowd?

Yeah, Stanton's been around though.
bceagle05 : 7/10/2017 2:48 pm : link
It's not homerism - Judge is leading the AL in a bunch of different categories, and is having a much better all-around season. I think the networks will focus on Bellinger and Judge quite a bit these next couple of days - rookie phenoms in big markets.

By the way, Miami in mid July... players cant be enjoying this. wonder if they even try to open up the dome / left field windows tonight... always 50/50 rain is coming in sideways this time of year and its muggy as hell.

You have rookie phenoms playing for two marquee franchises - one in each league, and each coast. It couldn't possibly be scripted better. Does that shortchange Stanton? Sure, but you can bet that's the way the coverage is going to be slanted.

Yeah but Logan Morrison isn't there. Whatever will MLB and the fans do without him?
Cut LoMo some slack
MetsAreBack : 7/10/2017 3:48 pm : link
he's probably the only MLB player I can recall ever being butt-hurt about not participating in this thing. Particularly in a pitchers park. He must have some sort of weird incentive clause in his contract.

By the way I didn't think much of Stanton's season this year - but turns out he does have 26 HRs playing a cavernous pitchers park vs Judge in a bit of a bandbox. They're both freak specimens - its not an insult to compare Judge to Stanton.

Yeah, the players couldn't enjoy the whopping 3° difference right now. Way to hot for baseball!

Anyways, I'll be supporting both Judge and Sanchez from right field tonight. Should be a good time if my son and I can withstand the air conditioning.
no, not an insult
Greg from LI : 7/10/2017 3:59 pm : link

Blackmon is the "smallest" of the HR Derby competitors at 6-3 210. Then, from there ...

6-0 230 Moustakas
6-2 230 Sanchez
6-4 210 Bellinger
6-4 249 Bour
6-4 260 Sano
6-6 245 Stanton
6-7 282 Judge

You're literally the first person on the planet to insinuate that Judges HRs are helped by playing in a "bandbox". Absolutely ridiculous. This guy hits moon shots all over the field and has also been robbed of another HR on a terrible call.

And the only person taking insult to compare Judge to Stanton was Stanton. Not the fans

.Mets fans trying throw cold water on Yankees fans enthusiasm is a bad look.
HR Derby selectors
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/10/2017 4:08 pm : link
often make the mistake of choosing guys who hit HRs because they are great hitters rather than pure mashers (e.g. Robinson Cano). Some guys do both, but I always thought this was all about the guys who put on clinics in batting practice even if they are <.250 hitters.

I'm glad they no longer limit the participants to All Stars because for years I thought guys like Adam Dunn and Mark Reynolds should always be in the Derby but they never were because they didn't make the ASG.

Obviously I'm pulling for Sanchez and Judge, but I'm most excited to see Judge, Stanton, and Sano hit absolute moon shots.

stadiums play a role in HR quantity
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/10/2017 4:09 pm : link
but Judge has hit the ball harder than anyone ever recorded by Statcast, literally.

100% womens. The low cut, and very small letters are the easy giveaway. The youth sizes jerseys are obviously small, but they arent low cut and dont have small letters like that

People forget about Kingman. He wasn't a great all around ballplayer but he was like Judge in terms of being somewhat of a physical freak. I was at the Stadium once when Kingman hit a ball out of the old Stadium - it was foul, but it was about 2/3 of the way down the left field line. That was impressive.

Bour kinda gets screwed by the rules. But he put on a show.
Wasn't a big fan of the HR Derby, but that was fun. Good show by those guys. And you could tell Judge was in the best shape out of all of them. Sano was completely spent. Bour looked to be in the 2nd best shape. Even El Gary was spent.

You know what's funny about Judge and Jeter....

is they have some of the same mannerisms, same demeanor, some similar quirks. Judge also looks to be bi-raical same as Jeter.

Of course we don't really know if Judge is bi-racial since he was adopted. Jeter would have been 17 when Judge was born of course. In the unlikely event Jeter got someone pregnant when he was 17 good chance they would have been too young to raise the kid themselves.

Wouldn't it be the craziest story of all times if Judge ended up being Jeter's biological son?
