NFT: Yanks Talk - 07/10/17 - HR Derby Edition

Let's talk Yanks...what deals, if any, do you think they should make...
Was kind of hoping Sy'56's little tidbit...

from the game thread yesterday got some more color...but we have to wait and see.

but I believe they will come back from a trade (or trades) with a starting pitcher and a first baseman. I've read so many rumors that I would not even venture a guess. I'm more interested in who they are going to give up because they have to shed some talent to stick to the 40 man roster or they will lose them in the rule 5 deal.

I suspect they let Mateo go and maybe throw in a pitcher or two. Also wouldn't surprise me if Dustin Fowler and even Estavan Florial gets traded. The outfield is crowded and they are making way for a Frazier-Rutherford-Judge-Hicks outfield. And if they have any inkling of signing Bryce Harper, there's "not enough tits on the hog to feed all the piglets" (note: that's an Abe Lincoln saying BTW when he was confronted by an angry woman upset with all the cuts to government jobs)
I think the Yanks are going to hold their fire for a couple weeks
rich in DC : 7/10/2017 6:35 pm : link
They might make a minor move for a bullpen arm during the break- but other than that, wait.

The reason is that they have an 11 game stretch on the road after the break- and have been VERY bad on the road this year. Another stretch like the last 10 games, and this team could be out of playoff position and looking to sell.

Priority one is a bullpen arm
Ron from Ninerland : 7/10/2017 7:20 pm : link
Tyler Clippard has single handedly blown at least 5 games. Bentaces and Chapman have blown a couple more. Put those games in the win column and the Yankees are still in first, even with the injuries and mediocre starting pitching. We hope that Bentaces and Chapman will get back on track but Clippard ? Even when he's right he's just not that good. He's primarily a junk ball pitcher that has to have perfect command to be effective and even then, he can't strike people out. Chad Green may have the stuff to be a late inning guy but he's shown he hasn't got the durability. Warren is more of a long man. Shreve isn't quite there although I already trust him more than Clippard.

Coming into this season this Yankees bullpen was the weakest they've had in years, and now its biting them in the ass.

Completely ridiculous comment - Clippard has been garbage but coming into the season Clippard, Betances, Chapman and the others were not the weakest in years and almost every "expert" had the bullpen as a strength - which it was for half the year. Where were you midway through May when the bullpen was one of the best in baseball?
I just saw that the Yanks released Carter.

Just like everyone has a game plan till they get hit, everyone holds out for the moon for Justin Boer until July 31, then Mateo and another piece gets it done. If we are in the race I'd I'd seriously consider a deal that didn't include the top guys.
Mateo has come back around
Phil in LA : 7/11/2017 2:03 am : link
Is taking his walks and still has 80 speed and defensive versatility. People want to trade that because Bird is out longer than expected? A disruptive lead off guy for the next dynasty for a guy with no versatility, good power and will cause a log jam when Bird gets back. Pure idiocy.

BOOM! There's nothing out there worth making a big, move this year. Let some GM drop their pants for prospects if meed be. Otherwise we stay the course and deal only for value.

There is literally nothing out there that is worth dealing high after.

Mateo has had a good month or 2. Its only a matter of time before the 10th MRI/bone scan finds the tiny fracture in Bird's ankle just like with Tex a few years ago, and he's done for the year. That would make 2 straight years he's missed. I love Bird as much as the next guy but can you really count on him at this point? And frankly is he that much worth waiting for? He's got a nice skill set and I'd be fine with him at 1st long term if he was healthy but I see no problem with exploring a guy like Boer as long as the cost is fine. I'm not advocating giving up guys like Frazier/Torres/Adams/Rutherford etc...
and I fully trust Cashman, he's one of the best GM's out there
Stu11 : 7/11/2017 8:22 am : link

Is very honest in his interviews, I have listened closely the last few seasons and he has done exactly as he said when interviewed. Right now he said the Yanks want to add people to help for this season, he believes they do have an opportunity this season. BUT, he is not going to give up on the long term plan of competing year after year for a one year run, he said he has already turned down trade offers for players he believes would help this season, but the price tags are outrageous so far. He said Yankee fans would be happy to know he turned down the trade offers that have been proposed to this point. I absolutely believe every word he said.
He is actively looking to trade (I think)...
Dan in the Springs : 7/11/2017 9:29 am : link
because of the log jam on the 40 man and rule V draft, no? I'm not well versed on the details anymore and haven't kept up as well as I'd like, but it seems like they have to make some moves to protect guys or trade someone no matter what, else they risk losing them.
I love Bird, been a fan since he started his Nick Johnson act...
Dunedin81 : 7/11/2017 10:09 am : link
in the low minors. But this is going on two years where he was expected to contribute but injuries have made him a non-factor. This ankle/foot thing could be persistent. Can you punt two reasonably competitive seasons in the hope that he comes back healthy and hits like you hope he hits? I wouldn't hate a Bour move if the price was right, failing that at least get a stopgap.

I agree. A little tired waiting for Bird to get healthy and contribute. Bour would make a great stop gap for a couple of years, but also could be a long term player as our DH as a lefty killing it with the short porch in right. Sorta like Big Papi who wasn't a stellar first bagger, but his bat was too important to keep out of the lineup. And since Bour's more than adequate at first base, could also be used there in the future as a 1B backup and DH to whoever ends up being our long term fix. Certainly a huge upgrade over Carter. I'd love to see him in pinstripes.
Bour's not going to command a stopgap price, though
Greg from LI : 7/11/2017 10:28 am : link
The Yankees are going to have to make some deals, though, with the coming 40-man crunch. They can't keep everyone.
Yeah it's rough...
Dunedin81 : 7/11/2017 10:40 am : link
and a number of the breakthroughs of especially the last month or so (McKinney, Polo, Cave) involve guys who aren't on the 40-man and likely won't be. If you want to get something for them, you need to package them. There are teams with bleak farm systems for whom 3-4 bats for a bullpen arm or even a live short season lotto ticket is a good deal.
yep Dun and we have the perfect GM for this task
Stu11 : 7/11/2017 11:06 am : link
he'll sort this all out and do whats needed to make this team better this year without mortgaging our top prospects I bet.

The marlins can ask for all they want, however the market for power hitting 1B who have never hit more than 23 hr's is just not going to be through the roof. Sure they can hold on to him, but if they want to move him (and with him due a big raise in arbitration next year they might) the market just won't be through the roof for him.

They've got three plus years of team control and his first arb year isn't likely to be significant, they have no need to trade him. If they want a salary dump he's the least of their problems. So his asking price is understandably high.
The 40 man limit
mavric : 7/11/2017 11:34 am : link
is really the big dilemma facing the Yanks. They've built a super great farm system loaded with prospects. And they are going to have to let a half dozen of them go unprotected and they will immediately get snagged up by other teams in the Rule 5 deal. That's the problem with stockpiling high end minor leaguers.

Hence, the ONLY thing that makes sense to me is to get something for a few of them while they still belong to the Yanks. Otherwise, we lose them anyway and get absolutely nothing in return.

Yea but he will get a monster raise this off season and he's going to be 30. In a juiced ball year who's to say he doesn't revert back to the typical Bour next year? now is the time for him to cash in and I think on July 31 they will realize that.

His salary probably goes to $1 mil, give or take. Year after next probably $3, and so on. So even if he regresses he'll probably be under-market for the next few years.

Deadspin has a remarkable post with spray charts from MLB. All of the other comptitors pulled virtually all of their homers. Judge, on the other hand.....

Look at how many opposite field shots there were!
^^^^
Del Shofner : 7/11/2017 12:40 pm : link
That is really cool. Here is Joel Sherman in the Post:

"There is a different quality here. Everyone hits homers in this event, but not like Judge. The theory is the balls are juiced for this event, all for better flight. But that means they are juiced for all. Yet, just one man exceeded 500 feet. Judge. Four times.

His homers came in all shapes and sizes, in all directions. He launched shots like the fountains at Bellagio, majestic parabolas into the upper deck in right and beyond it in left. There were line drives that seemed as likely to take down a wall as clear it. And like he was playing a game of Around The World in basketball, Judge would sprinkle the homers to left, to center, to right — a symphony of distance."
I can't even imagine how many he might have hit

I don't think that that fact was lost on anyone, including die-hard Yankee haters. Kid is a superstar. I hope the Yanks hurry up and sign him to a long term contract while they can. Because if Bryce Harper is about to get a 650-750 million contract by some team, Judge could get more. We need to lock him up to be a Yankee for life without dealing with competition during free agency when he discovers some team will give him a billion dollars. He is our modern day "Babe Ruth"
The only thing I haven't liked about the coverage of Judge
Matt M. : 7/11/2017 1:00 pm : link
is that ESPN keeps referencing records (i.e. longest ball, hardest ball, etc.). But, these are only since ESPN started tracking this. For example, his 496 foot HR was touted as the record breaking HR for distance, but how many 500 foot HRs were there from Mantle alone, let alone other superstars?

That said, this kid is fun to watch. He is so relaxed at the plate, plays hard, for a guy his size he plays a pretty good OF, and his power is just unreal right now. I sincerely hope, as a baseball fan, not just as a Yankees fan, that he is the real deal. Watching someone hit like this over a number of years is what I imagine it must have been like to watch Mantle's career or Mays' career, etc. But, this is just one year. I am NOT calling him the next Mantle.

beatrixkiddo : 7/11/2017 1:00 pm : link
you could tell that some of the players he competed against minus Bour were pressing to hit as many as they possibly could knowing Judge was going behind them. It was obvious with Sano and Bellinger, Judge is just superhuman, I can't believe the Yankee's have this kind of talent, its so exciting as a fan.

I wouldn't do that just yet. He is under team control for a few more years. You need more than half a season to get locked up for that kind of time and money. given his strikeout numbers, it is still possible his career could take many different arcs.

It's very difficult to judge. A player in the Negro Leagues is said to have hit a ball more than 700 feet, and Josh Gibson's feats are legendary. But because nobody has come close to some of them in the modern era, even with faster pitching, greater strength training and every other modern advantage, the inevitable question is whether those balls (potentially those bats) were different than the ones in use today.
