An old Marine may wear his old uniform so long as it is correctly worn and he conforms to Marine grooming standards. Eating with his cover on is highly suspect - Marines only wear them indoors when under arms.

No way she he be wearing his cover indoors. I've seen some old lcpls before ( busted down or prior service) but sounds like stolen valor to me.

Hard to fathom the balls of someone to do this, considering the number of Marines in the world, and how I'd guess most might be inclined to confront (or am I wrong about that?).

Much respect for you guys. N one for people who'd do that crap.

Then some questions may be in order. It's pretty simple to nail most fakers. They won't readily remember things all Marines would, like boot camp platoon number/company/battalion, MOS, duty stations.

That said, some people get wayyyy too aggressive with this stuff and take it too far. Phonies piss me off, but sometimes what appears to be stolen valor isn't. Nothing wrong with asking questions though.

there is a matter of context. Not too many frauds are looking to steal the glory of a lance corporal. That being said, if the guy is bull-shitting his way for financial gain and public recognition, some questions would be in order. But a guy getting a round of drinks on the house, some ass and steak, isn't going to warrant any confrontation. Best I can tell from the details given is that he is wearing his cover indoors which would be a red flag regardless of branch of service. If everything else looks in order, big deal. The guy might just be an old marine wearing his old uniform and doesn't give a crap about wearing his cover indoors.

The con man using fake or embellished service to get money, and the pathetic loser trying to not be a pathetic loser. The former deserves all the scorn he gets. The latter? Tough to get too animated. But it's all too easy to take it too far, and start giving the Spanish Inquisition to someone who may have served honorably and doesn't deserve the hassle.
