There was a story in ESPN this morning about DeAngelo Williams being a free agent. His reasons for not considering the Cows are straight out of a Giants fan website. From what I saw last year he is still a quality RB so the Giants should do their due diligence and consider bringing him in...he'd teach Perkins and Gallman a huge amount as young RBs

loved him in college and all he's done is produce whenever given touches
I like Gallman better as a number 3 right now and the Giants don't owe Vereen or Darkwa anything.
And, how much time did Vereen and Darkwa spend on the field last year? Williams may have nothing left but are some of you for real?

You do realize that DeAngelo WIlliams has missed 17 games in the past 3 seasons right? Why would we take a hit for releasing Vereen and Darkwa and then sign Williams(who wants to get paid)? Are you for real?

Agree 100% and was going to say the same thing. What if Perkins is just average (or worse below average)... Gallman's a rookie and plays like one... you guys ready to go into the season (or go through the rest of it) with Vereen and or Darkwa as your starting RBs?
I think this would be a great signing and I'd cut Darkwa in order to get it done. Darkwa's shown he can play well enough when he can stay on the field but the question is would he make it through a season? And Vereen isn't a 3 down starting RB (although he could maybe do it for a game or two). Yeah sorry... I don't see anyone besides Perkins and Gallman (and maybe Vereen) who is so important that they can't be let go for a proven RB who although may have some mileage on his legs (although not as much as you'd think because he split time so often throughout his career) has proven to be an above average back when given the carries.

hasn't taken a single snap yet we can't look at a veteran who may or may not have alot left in the tank because Gallman is a lock to do something special. Who the hell knows if he can find a hold to run through or catch a pass from an NFL QB or block a blitzing NFL LB. We barely know what Perkins can do over a full season. Granted he's pretty much a lock to make the team but for all we know, all he does this year is STs while he learns to play with the big boys.

All that said... Williams would have to know, understand and respect that he's going to be no better than 2nd on the totem poll as far as carries go and that Perkins and/or Gallman will have every opportunity to win and keep the starting job. The only way Williams would get a shot is if both Perkins and Gallman (if he shows that he may be able to handle the job in preseason) are either injured or very ineffective. I'd give him the shot over Darkwa (if he was still on the roster) and Vereen (who I don't think can handle it over more than a game or two).

Or we could release Draughn or Abdullah if DW was willing to come in for the vet min (or close to it). Health aside, he's arguably better than any RB on this roster and Vereen/Darkwa have their own injuries to deal with.
He was the league leader in rushing yards for the first two weeks of the season until Bell came back.
The only three untouchable 'we're not cutting this guy' RBs on the roster, as far as I'm concerned, would be Perkins, Gallman and Vereen.

I would replace Draughn with DW in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I agree - I don't care about Abdullah either. I don't even expect him to make the team anyway. Darkwa kind of has a cult following but I'd take DW over him too.
Yeah, thats what everyone said after 2014 after he averaged 3.5 ypc.
"Too old, he's done."
Then the next season he rushed for over 900 yards and 11 TDs at 4.5 ypc.
He's not done.
I can't see this "super bowl run" team go into the season with w/a 2nd year RB, a rookie RB (I love both of them btw) and Vareen. Seems like a perfect situation to have a vet RB come in to back up/teach.
Agree, after having the Blount interest, I have been wondering if we'll sign someone like D. Williams
or if someone like Alfred Morris shakes free, and whatever the heck is going to happen with the Saints backfield. (AP/Engram)
Anyone like any other vets that may get cut?
he was the short yardage back once Bell returned.
Me too. I'm on board with having a vet like DW play the mentor role, assuming he accepts a limited role, as I think he would. I know the Giants are committed to getting younger and more athletic, but there's still value in vet leadership
That said, replacing Darkwa with Williams could be a nice move imo. Darkwa has proven three things: 1, he's a decent STer, 2, he's a runner willing to hit the hole hard, and 3, he has an injury history especially when given a significant number of carries. I've been partial to idea of Darkwa as the short yardage back this offseason but Williams may be a better fit because of his more proven durability. The biggest knock I would make is that his age makes him a risky signing and a short term solution. You don't know if he'll fall off the cliff or if he's more liable to fall to injury. And, if Darkwa shows that he thrives in a limited short yardage role, he's got age and size on his side.
Depends on what they think they've got from Darkwa, but I lean towards staying the course and not bringing in Williams.
Again, although his age says he's 32 his legs are more in the 29-30 age as far as mileage. I think he'd be a pretty good signing.
If he was younger, he'd already be signed.
Quote:
But much like Jennings lost it completely at age 31, I'm not sold on a 32 year old for RB. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see the Giants pursuing.
If he was younger, he'd already be signed.
Thanks for the correction. I was just repeating what I'd seen somewhere else.
My point still holds though that because of him splitting so much time throughout his career, he doesn't have the tread on his tires that a RB his age would typically have.

Absolutely. No argument from me. :)

We are full at the position. I always liked him in Carolina, but he's clearly passed his prime. We have 2 young guys in Perkins and Gallman, we have Vereen and we have Darkwa. I don't see where he would fit.
Full at the position? Take those 4 RB's and you can count 12 games total in their careers for NFL starts.......
I don't know if Williams is the guy, but I do see a veteran cut from another team getting a spot on this roster.....Darkwa, for whatever reason, can't stay on the field.....and to roll the dice with him is just crazy....
Oh by the way, I would have no issues if we didn't either...
