NFT: To any distance runners I need some advice

blueblood'11 : 7/13/2017 8:26 am
Talking specifically about the hamstring. I started with it over 3 months ago in an area referred to as the sit bone. I'm told it is where the muscles in the hamstring come together and attach to the pelvis.

That is where the problem originated and quickly migrated into to meat of my hamstring halfway between the knee and glutes. Through therapy the hamstring muscles themselves feel fine. My therapist says the area where they attach is very hard to get blood flow to help the healing process.

He assures me through time it will clear up. I have resumed running on a gradual basis at the recommendation of my therapist and while I am able to run through the discomfort I'm becoming somewhat skeptical that this is ever going to go away.

I'm a distance runner and it is starting to get on my nerves. My inclination is to run run run but I can't go at it the way I desire because of this issue

Is there anyone out there who has had this condition happen to them and what was the outcome. What do you recommend. My daughter thinks I should have an MRI and after all this time I'm considering it.
You probably..

need to figure out if any of the muscle has been detached from the bone. If you have discomfort when sitting, it could be an avulsion which is where it comes off the pelvic bone.

I think you'd need an MRI to determine that.

If it is a less severe issue, rest and moderation should help, but hamstrings (even tweaks) are notorious for lingering. I tore my hamstring in college and to this day, long car rides start to make me feel discomfort.

That's what worries me. Lingering effects.
I agree with your daughter.

I have had hammy problems in the past (although not in the area you are experiencing them), and it got to the point that I expected to feel it pull. I would overreact to every minor twinge. If you get the MRI, at least you'll have the comfort of knowing if there is a structural problem or not. Good luck.
Have you discussed this...

with an actual doctor? That should be your first step...

that with all the studies that show how bad distance running is for the body, it is still popular. So many people I know with knee, hip, back, ankle issues all were distance runners.
Well

I've been running all my life and this is the most perplexing injury I've ever had

When this occurred it didn't seem that serious and I was sure therapy was the way to go. Maybe I was naive or fooled but I've had injuries before and this just seemed more of a nuisance that a little therapy would help alleviate.
Hey Blue blood I have the same injury

started running about a year and a half ago after a 25 year absence. Was going good for about 6 weeks and then this injury. Same leg and same injury from way back when I competed 30 years ago. I run now once a week and one year and a whole lot of treatments later its still painful. You have hamstring tendonosis most likely

Thanks. I'll check it out. But let me ask you, is this something that will dog me the rest of my running days?

It may. Im 54 years old so perhaps thats why mine came back after all of those years. If your young it may heal. Check out that video and go see a chiropractor and get some ART Treatment and see if that helps.

Well, talk to some skiers, or soccer players (esp women), or football players. Talk to anyone; knee, bank, ankle issues are common. Studies have shown that distance running is a good exercise outlet for many, but not for everyone.

To add to that running is a straight ahead activity. It puts less stress on the joints. Injuries occur but when you see the numbers of people who run in this country those numbers are minuscule.
