NFT: Yankee Talk: 7.13

kash94 : 7/13/2017 11:05 am
1- Huge four game set in Boston starting tomorrow. With Sale pitching in game 2, winning tomorrow is very important (granted the Yankees beat Sale the last time they squared off).

2- Seems like Holliday and Castro will be called up soon. Who gets sent down? Does Frazier stay?

3- Bird took BP at SI yesterday. Yankees need to be careful so I'm not really expecting much, but good to hear.

4- YES network ratings are up 53% this year year-over-year.

A random note, but it still sucks that Cano is no longer with the Yankees. Trust me, I'm happy they didn't offer that contract and you can make an argument Castro has been better than Cano this year (with a much better contract), but it still sucks.
Hicks
kash94 : 7/13/2017 11:06 am : link
is also slated to start baseball activities on the 25th, so hopefully he'll be back the second week of August.
Problem is that because the Yankees didn't sign Cano,
TheMick7 : 7/13/2017 11:09 am : link
Cashman tried to make it up by signing Ellsbury. I didn't like the signing then & I like it much less now.At the time, I thought Cano's contract w/the Mariners was ridiculous but w/hindsight being 20/20, I'd do it in a second if I had known his "replacement" would be Ellsbury!
Greg in LI isn't often right
Rover : 7/13/2017 11:19 am : link
But he hit it on the nail before when he said that was a total overreaction of the Yankees to the Red Sox winning the 13 series.

Yanks blew it by not trading Cano at the deadline.
They knew they couldn't sign him to a reasonable deal.

Good point!

Buster Olney brought this up, but Cano is putting together a HOF career

At 34, his career stats are:
.305/.354/.497
295 HR
493 doubles (5th among active players)
2297 hits (6th)
64.3 WAR (6th)
8 all star games
5 silver slugger awards
6 top 10 MVP award finishes
2 GG

Assuming Cano plays 6.5 more years (remainder of his deal) and has an average line of

.280
15 HR
25 doubles
150 hits
4 WAR

His final career stats would be

393 HR (most all time for a second baseman)
656 Doubles (8th all time. 3rd all time for a second baseman)
3272 Hits (13th all time)
83.8 WAR (46th all time)

Cashman wanted to deal Cano
Greg from LI : 7/13/2017 11:33 am : link
But Hal wouldn't let him. It was a huge mistake. Glad he learned from it.

And, of course, if they were going to spend $150M on Ellsbury, then they should have just paid him.
Yeah...
Dunedin81 : 7/13/2017 11:40 am : link
walking away from Cano was fine. Spending 60% of those dollars on Ellsbury after letting Cano walk was not.
Frazier will stay until Hicks comes back.
BC Eagles94 : 7/13/2017 11:51 am : link
The extra pitcher (13th) will go down for Holliday. And either Refsnyder/Wade will go down for Castro (hopefully Refsnyder).
Here we go with this Cano stuff again
GiantJake : 7/13/2017 12:14 pm : link
Cashman made the best business decision for the Yankees. They have a legit shot at getting under the luxury tax threshold next season. Resetting that clock would be huge moving forward. It's not like the Yanks let Cano go and replaced him with a bum. Starlin Castro made the All Star team this season. He makes a fraction of what Cano does and he is 7 years younger. Cano is making $24 million a year through 2023! Starlin Castro is making $9.8 mil this season, $10.8 next, $11.8 next and a $16 mil team option for 2020. Cano is hitting .275 with 17 HRs and 60 RBIs. Castro has missed a few weeks and still has .313 with 12 HRs and 45 RBIs. Cano's numbers are better, but is it worth paying more than twice Castro's salary? I don't think so.

I was thinking the same. Fraizer fills out the outfield rotation while Hicks is down, and provides an extra DH option on days Holliday plays 1B. Wade probably goes before Reysnyder, as he struggling at the plate while trying to make the adjustment to big league pitching.

I'd be surprised/disappointed if Wade goes down. He is a better overall player right now then Refs. If Refs cannot hit, and he hasn't, he has absolutely zero value. I expect Refs to be DFAd.

If they didn't want to pay Cano, fine
Greg from LI : 7/13/2017 12:47 pm : link
If you go back through the archives, I said several times in 2013 that they should trade Cano rather than letting him walk for nothing. I stand by that. I also said at the time that letting Cano go was rather pointless if they were going to spend a good chunk of the savings on a far inferior player like Ellsbury.

And you can believe that Castro will maintain this level of performance if you want. There's no reason to expect him to, however. Doesn't mean he won't, but I don't think he will.
I don't believe in Castro at all
Phil in LA : 7/13/2017 12:51 pm : link
Thairo Estrada reminds me of Cano when he was young and sort of under the radar. I think he's the next great Yankee 2B.

I would have loved to have kept Cano, but not at 10 yrs/$240 mill at his age. 7 years/$175 would have been a decent number.

Ellsbury was one of the dumbest signings ever - they already had a better version on the team in Gardner. Only thing Ells does better than Gardner is steal bases and he has not done much of that.

I agree there is little chance Cano maintains his production past 36/37 yrs old (including fielding).

Don't count out Mateo. A few weeks back I thought he might be trade bait, but he has excelled since his promotion to AA Trenton.

Also, I wouldn't count out Castro. This year marks the 4th time he was named an all-star (and he is only 27).
He doesn't consistently control the strike zone
Phil in LA : 7/13/2017 1:14 pm : link
and I have no faith in players like Castro. I don't care who makes the all star game. I think Mateo might be the SS, the 2B or the CF while we wait for Florial. And the Yanks better get used to the idea of having young DH's from now on.
I've gotten the sense that the Yankees aren't nearly as high on Mateo
Greg from LI : 7/13/2017 1:17 pm : link
as we probably are. I expect him to be dealt, particularly since he is rebuilding his value with his hot hitting in AA. There isn't room for him in the OF and Torres surpassed him in the infield.
Interesting...

dealt for what? There are only shitty optons on the trade market. When Mateo takes his walks, which he's doing again, he is a devastating disruptor with 80 speed.

Cashman didn't make the call on Cano. I'm sure he gave input and would guess he agreed but the if the Stein Kids wanted to pay Cano it wouldn't have mattered what Cashman thought or wanted. That decision was made above him and it was the right call. McCann & Ellsbury were terrible panic signings after Cano left. How much of that was on Cashman we'll never know.

Phil don't you think it's unlikely that Estrada is going to get a chance to play 2B for the Yankees? Mateo, Solak and of course Torres and maybe others are probably in front of him.

Unless Cashman trades Didi and puts Torres at SS where he belongs, moves Castro to 3B, and opens up 2B.

But why change now? When they had Jeter they added Arod a much better SS and moved him to 3B. When they had Gardner they added Ellsbury and moved Gardner a much better CF to LF. So putting Torres a better SS than Didi at 2B would be business as usual I guess.

On a slightly off topic note I wish that next spring they give Judge some games at 1B. He played there in high school and it would save some wear and tear on the outfield walls plus give the Yankees some options against tough LH pitchers.

When the younger OF options arrive, Judge will most likely move to DH. His defense is actually quite good- but there are already reports that he has to ice his knees from wear and tear already. Putting him at DH likely extends his career rather than having him wear down his knees over whole seasons.

I could see the Yanks asking around the league offering Didi and Castro this winter to see if one of them could help pry away a top-end SP as Torres would be ready sometime early in 2018 to back fill for either one.

However, Estrada SHOULD be in AAA- why they are letting Solano and others take ABs away from Estrada is beyond me.
Estrada's been crushing AA as a 21 year old
Phil in LA : 7/13/2017 1:35 pm : link
Torres should be 2nd or 3rd when he comes back. Solak is older and behind Estrada.
Dealing Webb....
LarmerTJR : 7/13/2017 1:35 pm : link
Does it mean another deal for a reliever is coming, or the beginning of cleaning up the 40 man by getting younger prospects in return?

Why are the Yanks potentially opening a roster spot? The Brewers are in 1st place- I doubt they trade from their big league team for Webb.
why would you rather DH Judge than have him play 1B?
Greg from LI : 7/13/2017 1:36 pm : link
A 6'7" 1B who is a good athlete with a strong arm sounds pretty good to me, and it's not as if the Yankees are brimming with quality 1B prospects? At this point I'm assuming that Bird is the next Nick Johnson and will never be healthy for any length of time.

I would note that he has shown NO power before this season- and he has hit 10 of those 17 HR at home- in Colorado Springs- which is like the Coors Field of AAA.

If he's next in line for a shot- fine- but I wouldn't get that excited- he's not in the Brewers' top 30 prospects.
love the Webb for Cooper
RasputinPrime : 7/13/2017 1:45 pm : link
mostly because Webb didn't look like he was good enough to help us and Cooper may keep us from overpaying for a stop-gap 1B.
Webb

numbers in AAA. 366 avg, 17 HR and 82 RBI's. Sounds too good to be true that we only had to give up Webb for him.
PCL inflation

but it probably does prevent a big trade for a 1B.
Good point about the DH spot.

No need for the likes of Holliday or Beltran anymore. Use that spot as a way to break the OF logjam and rest Sanchez a bit more.

PCL inflation yes, but his league adjusted WRC+ was 170. He's 26 in AAA, but worth a shot as a fill in.
