NFT: Yankee Trade: Tyler Webb traded to Milwaukee

nygnyy274 : 7/13/2017 3:35 pm
Sources confirm Yankees get minor league 1B Garrett Cooper from Brewers for LHP Tyler Webb. I believe @JonHeyman & @JeffPassan had first.

Cooper hitting .366/.428/.652 17 home runs 82 rbi's at AAA but he's 26 and will be 27 in december so not that young.why not call up cooper now??? He's having a great year in AAA, Get rid of this waste Refsynder Wade can play the infield as well as outfielder and Choi can play outfield as well. Refsynder is totally useless
Very likely is insurance...
Dunedin81 : 7/13/2017 3:41 pm : link
Ford doesn't have a lot of AAA reps. Cooper is probably nothing more than a stopgap, but much cheaper than Bour.

Have you seen Choi
DCOrange : 7/13/2017 4:15 pm : link
The only place he's playing the OF is in a slo-pitch league.
They should absolutely call him up
Pego61 : 7/13/2017 4:28 pm : link
and send down Refsnyder. I'd prefer a 4 man bench, rather than 3.

You've got Holliday and Castro back this weekend. That will leave you with Romine, Torreyes, and either Wade or Refsnyder, if they stay with the extra reliever. If you have a 4 man bench, and you call up Cooper and let him platoon with Choi, that just makes much more sense.
Bye Bye Birdie

I get the feeling the Yanks have had it with Greg Bird and his phantom injury. He does not seem very eager to play even after missing all of last year.

A shame. He reminded me a lot of Jon Olerud. Very quiet swing with good power.

None of that matters when you can never get on the field.
I think it's insurance...
Dunedin81 : 7/13/2017 4:32 pm : link
against Bird having further problems and Choi turning back into a pumpkin. Cooper doesn't have significant splits.

Yeah, lifelong dream, starting 1B for the NYY, millions upon millions of dollars at stake. But he wants to be on the shelf.

Bird is already working out with Staten Island Yankees. Hell of a talent. Would be a shame to give up on him too early and have him come back and bite you in the ass. Have some patience, He will be back.

The Yankees know a lot more about his injury then we do. Doctors cleared him to play a month ago but he refused. Gee- if I had millions at stake I would probably play on one leg.
Given Cooper's age
wigs in nyc : 7/13/2017 4:46 pm : link
is he most likely a AAAA'er, Shelly Duncan/Peter O'Brien type, or a more well rounded prospect?
Dissident shitheads in Tampa like Levine & Trost...
Dunedin81 : 7/13/2017 4:48 pm : link
prodding Cashman to deal for a 1B by insinuating that Bird is malingering do not indicate what the Yankees do or don't know about injuries. Plenty of kids have had foot or ankle injuries that seemed minor but proved debilitating. David Adams, for one. And often they don't show up on basic imaging. If you want to be frustrated that the kid can't get or stay healthy sure, but accusing him of tiny heart syndrome is ridiculous.

It's the PCL, the most hitter-friendly league on the planet, and he's playing for Colorado Springs where the ball carries, so the idea that he's a budding star because of his AAA stats seems unlikely. But he was drafted at 22, he has progressed at a solid clip through the farm, his K rate is respectable, he could end up being a decent hit-first 1B with some pop.

Then why give up Webb for him. Webb was helping the team.
The Yanks have been killing it on the prospect front
robbieballs2003 : 7/13/2017 5:09 pm : link
So they absolutely 100% get ty6e benefit of the doubt here.
if this makes a move for Bour/Duda less likely
RasputinPrime : 7/13/2017 5:11 pm : link
then i'm a fan. Webb wasn't going to give us anything we can't find elsewhere.
Holy crap

1) Yeah, they do, which is why they are seeking stop-gap solutions, not a full-blown long-term replacement.

2) Doctors miss sports injuries--especially things like hairline fractures. If he is saying he is still in pain, why are the specific team doctors right about that, and him wrong? The main problem as the team sees it, apparently, is that they worry that he may not be able to stay healthy, not that he is malingering.

3) Bird knows if he is in pain or not, which possibly is why he won't risk future millions (with whatever team) to potentially damage his body by playing in pain. Playing baseball in pain just screws up your swing and your body. It ain't smart.
This could be somewhat of a 40 man roster move too...
BC Eagles94 : 7/13/2017 7:09 pm : link
Don't think Cooper is on the 40 man, and Webb was. And there is no reason to put him on it unless they feel like he is a better option than Choi and Bird/Austin aren't coming back. He can just be insurance down in AAA, while we open up a spot on the 40 man. Webb was a JAG. Like all these back end bullpen guys this year, he was a lefty though.

You could play with one leg and you'd bat .060 or something and you'd not get your $1 mill contract. Bird has to protect himself.
If he could play, he would.

Yeah that's the appropriate description of Webb, JAG. Given a choice between stuff and minor league pitching numbers the Yanks - and just about everyone else - will go with stuff.
Bird must have pissed Cashman off something fierce
32_Razor : 7/13/2017 8:47 pm : link
to make this trade.
where is the proof that Bird is actually
RasputinPrime : 7/13/2017 8:50 pm : link
refusing to push himself? I keep reading about this but a hundred idiots squawking doesn't make it so.
I hope the trade works out
mavric : 7/13/2017 9:15 pm : link
for the best. We have certainly been hurt by not having a legitimate first bagger (or third, but I digress).

I read that Cooper is an excellent defensive first basemen, so that's a great start. He's 6'6", 240 lbs so hopefully can stretch for the ball as well as dig out bad throws in the dirt. And he doesn't overswing at pitches. Has a nice swing.

Here he is hitting homers to both sides of the field.
Cooper going yard twice - ( New Window )
Good move
PaulN : 7/13/2017 9:27 pm : link
Gave up little and you never know, you may catch lightning in a bottle, worth the shot, I don't think this has anything to do with Bird other then the fact that they simply do not know when he will be available and if he will be this season.
