Very cool oral history of the Aerosmith/Run-DMC collaboration on "Walk This Way".

That song turned out to be the original rap song.

Not even close. Rap was around for quite a while already and was already becoming more mainstream.
It was Run DMC's

third album and they weren't even the pioneers of rap, it was far from the original rap song.

And it was awful.
Uh...

I think OC meant the Aerosmith version, not Run-DMC's, turned out to be the original rap song. Was there rap pre-1973?

Thank you
Brought Aerosmith back

They may have faded into obscurity if it wasn't for this song.
The first four albums are pretty strong
lono801 : 7/13/2017 7:09 pm : link
ROCKS being the best for me...

But I'll agree it brought back life to the band...

After Draw The Line...its slim pickings...
Get Your Wings was their best
redwhiteandbigblue : 7/13/2017 7:27 pm : link
Follow up to the initial album that had Dream On. Get Your Wings had Train Kept A Rollin. A close second was Toys In The Attic which was end to end hits like Toys in The Attic, Walk This Way,
Toys in the Attic had

Big 10 Inch....

It ruined a great album...

Aerosmith turned into a justifiably criticized band
santacruzom : 7/13/2017 7:51 pm : link
But in their early years they were awesome and surprisingly funky as fuck for a rock band.

Huh? That song is classic tongue in cheek Aerosmith

Night In The Ruts is actually one of my favorite Aero albums despite Joe quitting before it was done and Steven's vocals being ragged as a result of his drug problems (he was smoking crack by that time)

I've read a couple different articles claiming that 1985's flop Done With Mirrors was actually much better than its reputation
I think they were awesome through

Rock in a Hard Place (a very underrated album). After that it was hit or miss. Though Done Witn Mirrors is underrated too.

Rocks is my favorite. Just an awesome and gritty album.
I really liked reading

Chuck D talk about the early days of Rap, and how eclectic it was; Ruben just brought the two streams together in an official way. Thanks for posting.
Toys also had ridiculous Joe Perry

guitar riffs, moreso than any other album. Toys In the Attic, Sweet Emotion(killer riff),Walk This Way, Round and Round.

And if you don't get the "tongue in cheek" lyrics, you don't get Steven Tyler and Aerosmith.
I guess that's for me
lono801 : 7/13/2017 9:41 pm : link
I get it...

It still cluttered what could be a great album.

It's a stain

Definitely check out Done with Mirrors. I think it's great.

not bad, but the sound quality on it is horrible. Perry's solo tune, let the music do the talking appears on that one.
Oh yeah... I meant to say this earlier...

thanks for that link Greg. That was a great article. I knew about some of the stuff but not nearly all of it.
Glad you enjoyed it

For me, reading it takes me back to that time when I first heard rap. It was 1986, I was in fifth grade. It was a fun time because, for a few years there (and for the only time in my life), I was best friends with the coolest kid in school. He was like a real-life elementary school version of Ferris Bueller. He was the person who introduced me to Run-DMC, and they seemed like the coolest thing in the world.
