The New York Knicks are pursuing a deal with Scott Perry to make him the franchise's new general manager, league sources told ESPN.
Perry is the Sacramento Kings' vice president of basketball operations. The Kings granted the Knicks permission to meet with Perry, and the two sides sat down in New York on Thursday, league sources said.
The Kings and Knicks are beginning to discuss compensation that will allow Perry to take the job, league sources said.
Perry would report to Steve Mills, who will elevate to Knicks president, according to sources.
Phil Jackson was dismissed as president of basketball operations shortly before the free-agency period. New York has been searching for a GM who won't push for an overhaul of the front-office staff, league sources said, as well as an executive who can co-exist with Mills holding ultimate authority.
Perry was hired only three months ago as the front office's No. 2 to Kings GM Vlade Divac. That took place days after Perry was dismissed as the Orlando Magic's assistant GM.
Perry played a part in selecting Kentucky point guard De'Aaron Fox with the No. 5 overall pick and making a draft-day trade to move back and draft twice more in the first round, selecting North Carolina's Justin Jackson.
In free agency, the Kings signed veterans George Hill, Vince Carter and Zach Randolph.
Perry has a front-office history that includes stops in Seattle, Oklahoma City, Detroit, Orlando and Sacramento. He was part of helping GM Joe Dumars build an NBA champion and perennial contender with the Pistons.

in bright lights. Why did we need another thread about the Knicks GM when we clearly have one already? Was it so important to start a new thread? That's like 15 Knicks threads. It's impossible to have good conversations because everything is slip amongst all the threads.
I doubt it's anybody needing to see there name in bright lights. Probably just wanted the info out to fellow Knicks fans. It's kind of a big deal that they hired a new GM. Some people may not read through an entire old Knicks thread. If the news coming out was saying we were interviewing him I'd agree and say we don't need a new thread. For a hire I disagree.
Back to the GM. I don't know anything about him at all, but according to a lot of people who have a ton of knowledge about the NBA this is a good hire. I've seen at least 5 people on Twitter say this is the best move we've made in years. Let's hope that is true.
Also helped the Pistons kill it during the '09 free agency by signing
I'm finding it hard to trust him. But so far I can't really trash him. His signings at least have a point (younger more athletic- THJ, transitional PG in Baker ) and he hired outside the organization a guy who frankly is far more qualified to build a team than Jackson was. That's really not bad. Perry is obviously a guy Mills feels he can work with who has expertise he doesn't to make a good management team. That's s proper hire not a dysfunctional one. Let's see how they do together with regards to the Melo trade. That will tell us if the needle is finally pointing up.

sorry, but there's no defense for the Baker contract. Not the dollars, not the structure. It's awful on every level. If we cut the guy tonight it wouldn't shock me if he never makes another NBA roster.

Ron Baker cannot be your lead point guard in the NBA.
The Knicks are really good at a few things- constant dysfunction and staying in the headlines.

Knicks with zero direction and zero leadership. What a joke of a team. Sources: Knicks put Carmelo Anthony trade talks on hold, may want him back - ( New Window )
1. For the purpose he will be used Baker is not any worse than Rose or Rondo at this point. He's a transitional PG to Frank nothing more.
2. They put the Melo trade on hold NOT permanently canceled- which is what any responsible organization SHOULD do at this point with his trade value low AND a new GM coming on board. Rushing to make a crappy deal is irresponsible.
including reincorporating him into the team should be discussed. I don't think for a min that will happen but they should be looking at the whole landscape not just a litte part.
line is this... Houston and Cleveland don't have a single "great" asset. If the Knicks decide around training camp that a crap return is enough then they will still have that opportunity. I've talked about guys like Qi, Osman, Hartenstein all season and yet I acknowledge none are such great prospects that if we "miss out" on one of them we will be scoffing at the Knicks holding out (and Qi doesn't even appear available). On 7/14 there is no rush.

I'd argue Capela but that's been a non-starter. What if the Knicks tossed O'Quinn in with Melo? It's ridiculous that guys like Qi or Capela are non-starters but that's what happens when it's inevitable that a guy is getting dealt somewhere-- why give up anything of value? That's why I think this has to be a ruse to extract more in a deal.

I haven't seen any indication Capela is even remotely on the table. If he were I'm sure the deal would have been done by now. It's to the point people are overrating/overvaluing guys like Qi (who I would surely take because it's time to move on) but this isn't like getting a guaranteed help for the Knicks.

I agree, was addressing that they don't have a single asset but my broader point being that we're not talking about Giannis or even a next tier guy like Miles Turner here. He's their lone asset. The Knicks need some sort of leverage to extract more value (not saying it's going to be Capela because it's not) because otherwise why would Houston ever even consider including something of value. They know Cleveland won't include Love and that the Knicks won't take back Shumpert. They also knew that the Knicks wouldn't go into the season with Melo on the roster so you offer crap and wait them out which seems to be what's gone on to this point.
It's chutzpah for them to not even offer Qi. They're getting a piece they hope will make them a championship contender, and they won't even give up one useful player?
Unless we can get good young pieces, picks and expirings I wouldn't trade Melo, as much as I think that he's a poor fit for where we want to go next year -- the tank.
But I'd rather we wait him out and hope that he opts out after next year as opposed to being saddled with crappy players who take up cap space for years to come.
is a very good player but Im not super excited about maxing him out in a season. I think he's more of a Tristan Thompson good supporting player than a Draymond Green star in his own right type. It's fine to pay a lot for Thompson once you're out of cap space anyway, but I dont think you built a team by doling out max or near max money to support players.
Im somewhat torn about whether you need to keep cap flexibility for when KP is a legit star (when you'd draw better UFAs), or whether you should just get guys now to be better, which will attract other stars in the deep future.

He's not even on the table so I don't think you have to worry about it. Austin Green didn't seem over the moon excited about Osman, and Griffin (while still with Cleveland) sort of made him sound like a "does everything pretty well type" almost like a young Kuz. Qi is the most intriguing of the bunch but even then there are high odds he's not even an NBA contributor. Major risk.
There's no harm in pausing talks with Hou/Cle to attempt to get Melo
to try and get him to open up his list to include more teams. The deals they've been talking about will probably still be available in a few weeks or even once the season starts barring a Melo injury (always possible) so even if it's a low likelihood that he'll go to any other team it's worth a shot.

no team has traded away more second rounders (both our own and ones we acquired from other teams) than we have over the last 7-8 years. If not, it's gotta be a short list.

I wonder if Vegas has odds on him finishing that contract.
I can't remember the last coach or exec. we've had that actually finished a long-term contract - or extending an existing one. I think Isiah may have gotten an extension from Dolan at some point prior to the Anucha fiasco.
Pretty likely those trying to trade Melo before Perry was onboard
Why isn't the media going crazy about this GM 'search'? It seems like very few people realize or care that everything starts at the top, and with Dolan not willing to allow a 'real' GM like Giffen to come in with his own people nothing will get better, NOTHING.
I'm not a pro basketball fan, I much prefer college, but I do root for the Knicks. But I'm not sure I can continue to do that. I'm not jumping to another team but I can't waste my energy on this ownership any longer.
the media most certainly went crazy over the GM search

Less of a concern than losing our #1s. Even good teams often shed #2s.
Realistically, a good GM is easily worth a #2 pick.
Decades ago, as a New Yorker, even though I moved away, I was and remained a big fan of the Knicks. No longer. But I still have the Giants, the Yankees and the Rangers. Knicks dropped out. Sad, really. This change is unlikely to change that situation. I wish something would.
You can get 2nd rounders if and when you need them.
