Giants Birthdays 7-14

Rosey Grier DT D3-Penn State 1955 NYG 1955-1962 3-14-1932
From Life Magazine 6-2-2015
Code:

"Grier was 6& #8242; 5& #8243; and played at close to 300 pounds — but moved like a smaller man. “When I played in high school,” he told LIFE, “I patterned my movements on the little guys. They were so fast, and I learned to watch how they moved, how they worked their feet. So after a while, the instant the ball moved at the line of scrimmage, I would just explode off the line. My quickness came from watching little guys. I penetrated so quickly because I beat everyone off the line, always.
“It was an exciting time for me,” Grier recalled of his early days with the Giants. “Here we were, out of college — most of the guys, anyway, had all graduated from college — and to be with these players from all over the country was fun, a thrill … and, at first, a little nervous-making. I mean, when I first came to the Giants, a lot of the guys were from the South — the head coach, Jim Lee Howell, was from Arkansas — and I assumed that there was no way we’d get along. With me being black, and knowing that there were only going to be so many black ball players on a team — well, long story short, I could not have been more wrong. The camaraderie I found there was unbelievable.
“It was an an incredible thing,” Grier said, “coming from the South, playing college ball at Penn State, to end up in New York playing for a franchise with a history like the Giants. I enjoyed it so much, and became good friends with guys like Charlie Conerly, [halfback and receiver] Kyle Rote … oh, so many of them. The team felt like a family then. It really did.”

Short and Simple reads on Giants this morning
SGMen : 7/14/2017 8:00 am : link
My reactions are the same as those noted on past threads:

-QB's will be Eli Manning, Geno Smith & D. Webb (inactive 16)
-DE D. Taylor will make the final 53 despite 108th ranking
-OG Fluker will be the backup RG & RT
-OL 6th Rd Pick Bisnotoway will get reps at RT & LT (swing)
-WR Brandon Marshall will have a superb campaign, motivated

The only thing that could derail this team is injuries, an abundant long term amount of them.
I think the OL, overall, will be improved due to year #2 under Solari & continuity; due to youth (Flowers, Hart, Richburg) improving; and, because we have TE Ellison and 2nd year TE Adams/LaCosse who can block far better than W. Tye, L. Donnell ever could and those TE's will help our OT's a whole lot.

If we can rotate our DL's (and we really should) with success this team should be sick good right out of the gates, no issues.

I've said if we can somehow start 5-0, we'll be in great shape for the division crown.
Dallas will be a tough road game but due to suspensions and young secondary, I have to believe we prevail.
Detroit has an offense, sure, but their defense doesn't seem to be all that.
Philly will be a dogfight, hard to say how good Philly is now with 2nd year QB Wentz.
Tampa may be our toughest game to date - they will compete all year, even for a SB run. I believe that.
San Diego is hard to grade this early too but we are home, they are cross country.

Start 5-0, get on a roll where you have confidence that you can beat anyone, and good things will happen for us this year. Oh, a healthy 5-0 rather than a lucky 5-0 would be better. Go Giants!

Davis USA Today: Ranking NFL offensive lines by team: Cowboys have new challenger
"21. New York Giants: They've endured slings- and arrows, and there's no sugarcoating the offense's inability to run. But did you know the Giants' 22 sacks allowed in 2016 were fewest in the NFC? As far as guards go, Justin Pugh's a pretty good one. But the organization is taking a leap of faith that young Ts Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart, who too often look overmatched, will rise to the occasion."

I liked Kratch's comparison...
Dan in the Springs : 7/14/2017 12:49 pm : link
Taylor compared to Randle. Isn't it a bit weird that Randle is completely out of football? I mean, not really weird because he was obviously no star here, but he's relatively young and was a pretty high pick overall. He basically played out his rookie contract and that was it.

Pretty much the definition of a bust I guess. His receiving yards were decent while here for a 2nd receiver, but nobody liked what they saw in him.

Anyway - is that the thinking on Taylor? Had some decent production at times, a starter last year, but little/no interest around the league for his services. Is it possible that he will also be out of football come September?
