Call it a hunch,

I believe DT Robert Thomas, with his big body and understanding of the defense, starts game 1 and holds his own against Dallas and beyond. Maybe a notch below Hankins in terms of overall ability but nothing drastic; nothing that would make you say "why didn't we overpay for Jonathan Hankins and keep this defense in-tact" and such.

I would also not be shocked if J. Bromley was cut and C. Bryant kept. Bromley knows the defense which is to his advantage but it isn't like he has "wow'd" the NFL.

Because I truly believe we'll make a SB run this year if healthy; well, I'd keep a proven veteran over a total JAG.

JPP, Vernon, D. Taylor, R. Okwara, A. Moss - DE's
R. Thomas, C. Bryant, D. Tomlinson, ??? - DT's

And if Bromley was cut, I'm not sure anyone is going to really pursue him? Day 1 rosters aren't "set" despite the cap implication of having to pay someone for the season
Bromley's one of those scholarship guys Banks talks about.

Does absolutely nothing and just.....hangs on.

I went back and watched the 1st DAL game last year. We were stuffing Zeke - the minute Bromley comes on the field, they start moving the ball. It's ridiculous actually. On Zeke's long TD run, both Bromley and Wynn are on the field. And *BOOM* easy 20 yard TD.

And as a pass rusher? Completely ineffective. If we hadn't drafted this guy there is no way he makes the team the last couple years.
Health will be key

The drop off from Vernon, JPP, Snacks is significant. Lose any of these guys for a significant period of time and the Giants will struggle in run defense.

Hopefully we can keep Snacks at DT.
You might be on to something there, Robbie.

Yeah, I'll stick my neck out too and guess that Harrison makes the team. ;o)

As Eric suggests, the third edge guy will be a very important player on this squad. They can't expect Pierre-Paul and Vernon to handle the workload they carried last year, not to mention the need for somebody to step up if a starter gets hurt again.

I don't think Jay Bromley is as bad as his worst detractors suggest. On the other hand, he's nowhere near as good as the Giants hoped he would be by this point. I think he'll stick for another year, but a lackluster August could easily finish him.
Agree on Bromley. While I don't think anybody expects

his ceiling to be better than a rotational DT, it doesn't work if the opposing team's running game basically thrives when he is on the field.

And unfortunately it does...
I should say I also believe this is overall

the best Defensive Line in the NFL.

We have 3 dominant football players in JPP, Snacks and OV. It almost doesn't matter who the 4th guy is. This is an old school, 80/90's style DLine that's impossible to move the ball against.

I think part of the reason we didn't care much about re-signing Hankins was how quiet he was playing in between Snacks and OV. He saw lots of 1on1 blocking at 3T and did nothing.
Bromley
jtfuoco : 7/14/2017 5:00 pm : link
was a wasted 3rd round pick that was called by many BBI members the day of the draft its time to move on from him and stop this holding on to guys who where drafted but cant play for 3+ years yeah they may be cheaper under the rookie contract but most of these guys just don't belong in the league. In the modern NFL if a guys don't show anything by the end of year two you have to look to move on.

Take your response and apply it to Flowers. Or should he stay for the Weight Watchers program?
Bromley sucks

this will be his last year on the Giants ... assuming he makes the roster

There may be a reason we signed a guy like C. Bryant, a veteran with starting experience, and that reason is that he is simply better than J. Bromley (JAG). I guess we'll see how things play out in camp.

I think one reason we signed C. Bryant was the price tag: vet minimum with nothing guaranteed. Which is JAG money. Hopefully Bromley is better than that.
p.s.--My dark horse is Josh Banks! He is a long shot with two rookies (Tomlinson and Moss) already "guaranteed" roster spots on the DL; but if Bromley doesn't make the cut, Banks is the only remaining 3-Technique in the bunch.
I think we see improvements from OV and JPP this year.
giantgiantfan : 7/16/2017 2:09 am : link
I think a legit #2 DT will emerge. This line will only improve from last year. I think we're set for 20+ sacks between JPP and OV. If Okwara or the rookie emerges as a good rotational guy were are looking at a line that will be up there with the production of the Strahan/Osi/Tuck line and the Osi/Tuck/JPP line.

Will Eli Manning and the offense please step up, please step up.

I agree. OV played hurt for much of last year and it was his first in the system. JPP is still on the "learning curve" when it comes to the physiological changes to his hand, so there is a reasonable expectation of continued improvement on that score. And they are both young enough that a decline due to age is not yet a factor. If both have healthy years, both should perform better than they did last year. My expectations are Pro Bowl quality play from each.
