Yes there is a chance Harvey returns. He is about to start throwing. Personally, I use him out of the pen for the rest of the year where I think he can excel. His shoulder has atrophied from the TOS surgery and he doesn't have the strength to pitch 6 innings this year.
And way to go Matz giving up 4 runs in the first..
ZGiants98 : 7/16/2017 1:33 pm : link
WTF.
Wow.
ZGiants98 : 7/16/2017 1:39 pm : link
So much for a sweep. Fuck you Matz. Two back to back horrid starts.
At least it's early enough

to where there is a chance they can chip away at the lead. If they can get three or four back quickly and the pen holds them they may have a chance. Not likley, but a chance.

The Nats trade (Doolittle and Madson) would have helped us tremendously. Didn't cost a fortune either.

Familia
Reed
Madson
Blevins
Doolittle
Sewald

That would have been nice...

Walker, Familia, and Harvey all about to start rehab assignments.

I still say it's not impossible the Mets make a run late. The question will be if they have enough runway left to make up the ground they've lost.

I still buy and sell....

1.) Get Cabrera off this team as soon as possible. Fuck that guy. This will allow TJ Rivera to stay in the lineup when Walker returns.

2.) Trade either Bruce or Granderson (Bruce probably brings back more). This allows Conforto to slide into his natural position in RF and also allows Nimmo to stay up when Lagares returns.

3.) Bring in a reliever. Sandy loves adding Clippard/Reed type guys at the deadline. Do it again Sandy.

Team stays in tact for when the cavalry returns and the Mets still come away with a few prospects. Win Win.

Can this game mean we can be sensible and be sellers this month? The idea that the Mets were going to contend for a playoff spot is absurd.
We are 100% selling..
ZGiants98 : 7/16/2017 2:23 pm : link
The only question is "how much"?

I fucking hate Fernando Salas.
ZGiants98 : 7/16/2017 2:24 pm : link
Guy should have been cut the third week in April.

I was all for bringing him back on the cheap as a solid vet to fill out the pen but one of his biggest attractions was that he was cheap and cuttable if he didn't work out. Why is he still here?
Shocker...
ZGiants98 : 7/16/2017 2:29 pm : link
Salas comes in and starts pitching batting practice. AGAIN.
Damn.

He has really done a poor job this season. Putting aside the injuries for a moment there have been just far too many inconsistent starts from the staff this season. Some games, like this one the starter doesn't even seem prepared for the game. Mets had no chance today because of the horrible first inning by Matz.
Robles recalled...

Bradford demoted. Thank GOD. Robles has had a series of nice outings in a row.

I would. The guy can hit, but he's a player without a position. I understand sacrificing D for O, but he is a brutal fielder, and doesn't have a ton of power. If the offer is right, I'd move him.
Problem
DanMetroMan : 7/17/2017 11:10 am : link
with trading TJ Rivera is the return almost certainly is a lot lower than you would think. He's defensively a zero, 29 in October and unproven. I doubt the Red Sox are offering much for a guy like that.
Trade Tj

So you can play Flores.

The two are almost identical except Flores more power

You keep him, then. Low cost/productive player. At the MINIMUM, he's a very good bench player on a good team. At BEST, he's a productive hitter, everyday.

They are calling every team about 3b help. Not really sure Cabrera/Rivera make a ton of sense for them in that role (one refuses to play 3b, the other is below average there). I'm guessing due diligence.

They must be desperate if they're considering Cabrera for 3B. Personally, I think he's a decent fit at 2B, but doesn't have the bat or arm for 3B.

Because the Mets need to be sellers and not idiotic if they win 2/3 and suddenly believe they are close. None of the pitchers are coming back "soon", the bullpen is laughable, it's time to move the vets and look toward 2018.
Sandy flat out admitted the season was likely over
DanMetroMan : 7/17/2017 2:38 pm : link
""You're always looking to see what transpires over the next seven to 10 days," Alderson said. "But I think we're at the point in the season where things would have to go exceedingly well for us to realistically change direction.
"Not surprisingly, we'll be open to talking to clubs about various possibilities. So, certainly, the next week or 10 days will have a bearing on that, but I don't think we'll have a material impact on our thinking at this point.""

""This is not a teardown situation," Alderson said before the Mets hosted the Rockies. "This is what I believe is a pause button. We're going to have a lot of players that are free agents at the end of the year. A lot of payroll will become available. We're not looking to rebuild, quote-unquote, we're looking to make sure we have a nucleus of a competitive team going into next year."

As did Jay Bruce

“If the organization isn’t always trying to make themselves better in the long run, then they’re doing everyone involved a disservice — the fans, the players on the team currently, everyone,” Bruce said. “Because the goal is to be good for a long period of time.”
I'm fine with selling
Metnut : 7/17/2017 2:58 pm : link
but I'm not rooting for Mets losses.

Fangraphs gives the Mets a little under a 10% chance of winning a wild card spot. Given that we're likely looking at pretty marginal returns for our guys, I'm fine with the team going on an 8-2 streak and I get some fun baseball to watch over the last few months. It's not like we have a Miller or a Chapman that teams are going to get into bidding wars over.

Every prospect is a potential lottery ticket. You never know who is going to develop further or be better than expected. Heck, Syndergaard (a first rounder) was a prospect Keith Law thought was a future reliever and ranked him #87 in baseball, DeGrom was a non-prospect. The system is very thin, trade all impending FA's it's the right move.
I'm fine with
Metnut : 7/17/2017 3:10 pm : link
Alderson dealing all those guys (Reed/Bruce etc.) but I'm not going to root for the Mets to lose games in order to push him to do so. If we end up going 8-2 over next 10 and Alderson stands pat I'm fine with that too. I don't think they are making a run, but the team has 10%ish or so playoff odds at some point in each of the two prior seasons and not only made it interesting but made it in.

I guess we're also working on incomplete information because we don't know what type of offers/interest Alderson is getting for the players.

If we do sell, I'd be thrilled to get anyone that's even an honourable mention on someone's top 100 list. Best return might be to package two useful players to a team with a big need (maybe seattle?).
Even if they do
Metnut : 7/17/2017 3:15 pm : link
get hot, they should trade an Of, preferably Jay Bruce. His horrific defense negates a lot of his value in the NL and I don't want to see Conforto on the bench a few times a week to get Grandy playing time.
I
DanMetroMan : 7/17/2017 3:17 pm : link
believe Bruce/Granderson can both bring back a decent prospect, Reed should be able to, Blevins almost certainly would be sounds like they are keeping him. Wilmer/Rivera? Who knows? Matz probably tabled the idea of selling high on him. I'd take anything resembling a prospect for Reyes. Walker might be able to bring something solid back.

Sandy, and put the for sale sign out and leave it out until the dead weight is gone.

If it's true that because of Cabrera, Rosario has been in the minors this long (and otherwise they would have called him up sooner), that's an indictment of the front office and coaching staff.

It's not like Asdrubal Cabrera is a difference maker.

It reminds of the excuses that Al Leiter and ancient Jon Franco said Kazmir would be bad for the clubhouse because of his cockiness.

a top 100 prospect for TJ Rivera, then let's do it right away, but I'm not sure I'm inclined to deal him for peanuts, even if we're "selling high."

Guys like Rivera and Flores are good to have around. Players get hurt all the time and versatile IFs can be worth a few extra wins over the course of the season. Remember the days of Loney, Campbell and Reynolds getting significant meaningful ABs over the course of the season? I'd hate to see us go back to that.

Sandy seemingly closed the door on a Sept callup so maybe they wait until next season to "help" Bing and ticket sales. I haven't seen any indication he will "retire" after the season but who knows? He's already accomplished more than anyone (including the Mets) could have expected. He's been pretty amazing all things considered.

Well TJ Rivera isn't an example of a guy I'd be looking to trade. I'm putting up all pending FA on auction and listening on anyone else. #9 prospect in the Astros system for Jay Bruce is still better than nothing.

Shecky : 7/17/2017 3:35 pm : link
Earned a TON of respect, there isn't a person around that could have predicted his success. Nor dreamed of it. Hats off to him.

The first move the team makes is the most important. It's the signal to other teams what the starting point is, the value, the desperation to make the move. The first trade is the absolute most vital one - hence why Cabrera has not been "given away" as some have suggested should be done...

As for those that don't want to root for losses - it'd be the best thing that could ever happen to the franchise. An all out collapse for 2.5 months!!

I have my doubts Cabrera is much of a factor in whether or not to bring up Rosario. Rosario would be taking Reyes's starting spot at this point not Cabrera's.

I'm not personally buying it. I think it's mostly about wanting to settle the clubhouse post 7/31 aka who is gone/who is here etc. I'm not saying Cabrera is some angel but which veteran on a bad team embraces being replaced? And yet it still happens without a story. I'm not buying this one.
A complete collapse
Metnut : 7/17/2017 3:45 pm : link
during the remainder of the season seems to me to be very hard to pull off without controlled guys like Cespedes, Conforto, DeGrom, Wheeler, Matz, TDA (guys we're likely going to rely on to some extent next year) generally underperforming. Second tier controlled guys like Lugo, Gsellmen, Nimmo, Montero, Roebles, Smoker, Rivera and Flores would also likely not perform well if the team goes into the tank.

Is it really good for the Mets if Wheeler gets tagged tonight? Any new prospect that we'd get likely wouldn't make up the value "lost" from our controlled MLB guys underperforming.
I guess what I'm
Metnut : 7/17/2017 3:47 pm : link
trying to say is that I'm more than fine with Sandy selling off the vets in their walk-year but I'm not really comfortable in rooting for the team to lose a lot of games to make him more likely to want to sell those players.

I'm not telling others how to feel. I just think the worst possible situation is the one you laid out. Going 8-2 over the next 10 games and then standing pat or even worse "buying". They have enough talent going into next season with some tweaks they can legit be a playoff caliber team. This roster as of today not that. I'd take a few chips for guys who certainly won't be back next year + playing time for the kids. Win win.
