NFT: Yankees at Twins tonight - 8p - Ginger Edition!

B in ALB : 7/17/2017 5:25 pm
Very very interesting seeing Frazier in the 2 hole tonight.
Headcase down to 7. And what's this? No Torreyes? My eyes can't believe what they're seeing.

1. Jacoby Ellsbury (L) CF
2. Clint Frazier (R) LF
3. Aaron Judge (R) RF
4. Matt Holliday (R) DH
5. Starlin Castro (R) 2B
6. Didi Gregorius (L) SS
7. Chase Headley (S) 3B
8. Garrett Cooper (R) 1B
9. Austin Romine (R) C

Facing Adalberto Mejia
4-4
4.43 ERA
Is it completely silly to envision

Sanchez at first base eventually? I just feel like if he could completely focus on hitting and didn't have to worry about calling a game... he could be even more of a monster than he is now. Plus he could play every day.
Twins lineup facing Bryan Mitchell
B in ALB : 7/17/2017 5:46 pm : link
1. Brian Dozier (R) 2B
2. Zack Granite (L) CF
3. Joe Mauer (L) 1B
4. Miguel Sano (R) 3B
5. Max Kepler (L) RF
6. Kennys Vargas (S) DH
7. Eddie Rosario (L) LF
8. Ehire Adrianza (S) SS
9. Jason Castro (L) C

That's what DH is for. But in this case, he caught 16 innings on Saturday and then had to catch again last night because of the double header. I'm sure he could use a day off

It's not silly at all, but I have a hunch that despite his athleticism Judge will be there long term at some point. He's got a large frame to maintain and I think that would help. That said, same can be said of Gary, but we don't have any other catching candidates to fill his shoes. We do have some potential OF candidates to fill Judge's.
I'm not complaining about sitting him tonight
mattnyg05 : 7/17/2017 5:50 pm : link
but just in general, the at-bats you lose every year just being a catcher-is he good enough offensively to say "we can't lose those at bats every year"? He might be.

Agree it was never a matter of heart. And although this is a completely different aspect, it's now fair to call him injury prone. And I'm not talking about little injuries here and there, but injures that are serious enough for surgery. I think it'd be wise to look into other 1B options in the future, and anything you get from Bird being a bonus. I like the guy, but he's sadly injury prone and has had 2 surgeries within 2-3 years on his lower body. Worrisome for sure.
I don't understand this love affair Binder Joe has w/Romine

How do you figure ? He had one serious injury and this unrelated relatively minor one that was misdiagnosed . He had no injuries prior to the shoulder

Um, I don't recall too many people questioning Bird's heart.
robbieballs2003 : 7/17/2017 7:32 pm : link
There was a quote from an unnamed source (probably Levine) that called him out. People's posts were basically referencing that. Also, isn't it an exploratory surgery to get a better understanding of why he is in pain?
I remember not too long ago
RasputinPrime : 7/17/2017 7:36 pm : link
Sanchez was washed up as a prospect and many wanted to clear the dead weight.

Bird will mash. Sadly not before next year but let's not forget how good he is. The bigger issue this season was miscalculating with Carter as plan B. Hopefully Cooper/Choi or someone else on-the-cheap steps into that role.

You weren't on here enough then. There were plenty of people questioning Birds heart on this site. On particular poster said it was in his head. And these posts have been going on much before the "unnamed team source" article came out. That was very recently. I had several disagreements with posters that were killing Bird.

And I don't think it is exploratory surgery. They haven't announced yet but there were rumors itcwas to remove an extra bone in his foot that should not be there.

Don't know where you're coming from as I don't frequent the nightly whining sessions because of that. Maybe you should know that before you throw me into the "whining group", my gripe is Sanchez is one of your better players yet Girardi finds a way to catch Romine 3 days a week, even if it's not a day game after a night game.Unless Sanchez is hurt, that's just not good baseball. Thanks again for your insight!!!

I haven't been on much lately, but admittedly find the binders nickname stupid and the constant whining about Girardi tiresome. He's far from perfect, certainly fair to debate his decisions, but the daily complaining gets old.

As for Sanchez, none of us know for sure, but i suspect he's been taking a real beating behind the plate this season. Girardis obviously trying to keep him fresh

He needs rest.

Joe would rather sit El Gary 3 days before resting Judge or DHing him.

Just throw Holliday at 1B for the remainder of the year and burn him out.

It's very important to me the Yankees finish above .500 before our new dynasty starts

Mitchell's command of the breaking ball

is awful. He won't last 5 innings if he doesn't start throwing strikes.
re: Sanchez
Milton : 7/17/2017 8:46 pm : link
Catcher is kind of like shortstop in that you first want a guy who fields the position well and as long as he's not a liability at the plate, anything more than that is considered gravy. If Sanchez is below average at fielding the position (which includes calling the game, throwing out runners, and keeping pitched balls from getting passed him) they should consider their options (i.e, DH, 1B).

A catcher who calls a great game and has speedsters thinking twice on the basepaths is more important than one who hits .275 and smacks 40 home runs. If Sanchez can be both, he will be worth his weight in gold, but is he?

Guess the bottom 1/3 is not the black hole.
They weren't playing a shift and the third baseman was in.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 7/17/2017 10:48 pm : link
The bunt had to be 100% perfect. That was a very dumb thing to do.
sticking with Smith against Sano.
Del Shofner : 7/17/2017 10:51 pm : link
Thought we'd see a righty come in here.
Dangerous AB here

that ground ball gets through while we've been ripping balls at their defenders all night

Joe's luck ran out.
Del Shofner : 7/17/2017 10:57 pm : link
Why did he keep Smith in against a righty hitter there?
I know our pen is gassed but I don't get that.
Del Shofner : 7/17/2017 10:58 pm : link
This is a winnable game.
Is Girardi sleeping?
Kyle in NY : 7/17/2017 10:59 pm : link
Come on
OK - I've been a big Girardi supporter but I do not get this.
Del Shofner : 7/17/2017 11:02 pm : link
Smith did his job and now you let him fail after 50 pitches or whatever it is?
I'm kind of done with Girardi
Kyle in NY : 7/17/2017 11:03 pm : link
.
I think 10 years
bceagle05 : 7/17/2017 11:03 pm : link
might be enough for Joe.
Don't you dare criticize Girardi!
B in ALB : 7/17/2017 11:05 pm : link
God forbid you bother the delicate sensibilities of some Yankee "fans" who are just tooooooo tired of hearing it. Shame!

We could do a lot worse. But if a strong option shakes loose this offseason, I hope we make the move. Similar to what the Cubs did with Maddon
There had to be at least 1 RHP he could trust to get a few outs
shockeyisthebest8056 : 7/17/2017 11:09 pm : link
there. That wasn't fair to Caleb Smith at all. He pitched well and is going to get a loss barring a comeback.
The announcers said Smith was good for 100 pitches
B in ALB : 7/17/2017 11:11 pm : link
according to Girardi. Apparently there was absolutely no deviation from that analysis.

Aaaaaaaaaaand Headley smashes one 250 feet to LF. Well done power hitting 3rd baseman.
Another shitty loss complete with WTF is that idiot
shockeyisthebest8056 : 7/17/2017 11:14 pm : link
doing stuff this time courtesy of Didi Gregorius.
Ridiculous loss
Kyle in NY : 7/17/2017 11:15 pm : link
I'm sure Frazier will be on the bench tomorrow too
If Frazier isn't playing tomorrow
B in ALB : 7/17/2017 11:19 pm : link
Joe needs to be fired.

I suspect he'll play.

I hear Torreyes is pitching and DHing. Is that true?

No - that's ridiculous. He's playing 3B and batting cleanup.
Judge sits tomorrow

Might be time to get Andujar up to join Frazier

Send Headley packing DFA eat the money

Provide a spark.

Holliday/Gardy is all the vet we need
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 7/18/2017 12:45 am : link
1) At least one of Ellsbury/Gardner needs to be traded for whatever they can get. Frazier needs to be playing and Hicks outplayed both of them when he was healthy.

2) Didi's bunt made no sense. The 3B was in and no shift. Plus, he hits lefties and lefties have been hitting well against that reliever. He obviously did that on his own and it was a bad decision. You do that with 1 out or with the bases empty.

3) On the ground ball single in the bottom of the 8th, he was also shading too far up the middle for Sano. Playing more toward a traditional SS position, he makes that play.

4) I can't blame Smith. He pitched well and they didn't exactly hit the crap out of the ball.
New coach needed.

I hope so. Judge needs a rest and time to work out what's wrong at the plate.
Gave up on this game early (couldn't watch it live in VA anyway).
A little disappointed
mavric : 7/18/2017 8:35 am : link
but overall, I'm just enjoying the season watching the youngsters learn the ropes. They are fun to watch. Mitchell did pretty well last night and Smith looked real good. And even though Judge is in a slump (Babe Ruth, the Mick, and Lou Gehrig went through them too), he's showing off some good defensive skills and a rocket arm. Remember, he's still learning. And I was glad to see Cooper flash some leather and finally settle down and getting his teeth cut with some hits.

It's all good. We might not make the playoffs, but we get to have fun watching the kids mature into steady ball players. The hot Spring and early success spoiled us thinking the kids were ready now to go all the way and bring home the trophy. And maybe they will, but that was never the long range plan.
Sorry I'm too much of a die hard to be "enjoying" the past month
Stu11 : 7/18/2017 9:00 am : link
I am enjoying watching the kids and am slowly coming around to the reality that we just might not turn this thing around at this point this season so I'm not dying as much with the past few losses.

After this year I'd move on from Gardy. He's been a good hard nose/gritty player for the Yanks, but he is on the downside of his career and standing in the way of the youth movement; not to mention the team needs someone who can get on base more often leading off.
