Mark Bavaro was my secret crush in the 80s… When the SF 49ers play the Giants that Monday night and he dragged the entire Niners defense with Ronnie Lott clamped onto his back it made my heart go pitter pat :-)
To hear his words regarding Evan Engram makes me excited for the beginning of the season!
Bavaro doesn't even pay attention to football anymore. I heard him interviewed a couple years ago, and he sounded like he hadn't watched an entire NFL game in 10 years.

He saw Engram live in OTAs and was in awe of his size / speed. It's a good thing.

I think I read an interview with him not long ago where he said something like he doesn't pay attention to the NFL much anymore, has his own thing going.
Does anyone remember what he said about Shockey after he was drafted, if anything?

I remember since I met him at the game when Parcells returned as coach of Dallas. He was a quiet guy during his career and you're knocking him for being quiet in his post-career?
Only here can people can turn an innocuous quote into a heated debate about its merits.
I would love to know WHEN exactly has Bavaro seen this guy? College?
is LIVE DURING OTAs sufficient?
It's pretty impressive to turn anything about this comment into a negative ... nicely done BBI
Seriously? OTAs? Absolutely not.
So what if it's just OTAs? It's still a positive. There's no good reason to dismiss what Bavaro said about Engram unless you're just looking for the negative in everything...and even Doomster hasn't been doing that lately.
And actually, what Bavaro said was pretty measured and did include a qualifier:
Quote:
"He's unbelievable," Bavaro told the New York Post of Engram. "I don't know what he's going to look like in pads and playing football. But he can move. He can run and he can catch. He's impressive."
So, you can either say, "Gee, that's nice," and take it for what it's worth, or you can say, "Bavaro doesn't even watch football anymore," or "Meh, it's just OTAs," to which I'd reply with GFY.
with a huge grain of salt, be it positive or negative..There have been many HOFers to be during the spring or summer..
To me, College play mostly speaks for itself..As will performance in the pros..For the record, I'm quite excited about what Engram is expected to be and am eagerly looking forward to the regular season where the real evaluation of a negative or positive begins..
I don't care what Bavaro or anyone else thinks at THIS POINT IN TIME
Wow, looks like someone's little feelings are hurt. Â
Bavaro reporting that Engram is big, fast, and can catch is nothing we didn't already know. Seeing Engram in person was probably an eye-opener for Bavaro, because tight ends weren't like that in his day. And since Bavaro admittedly doesn't follow the NFL very closely anymore, he probably doesn't fully appreciate how much Engram's mold is the current one for NFL tight ends.
But you probably also got psyched when Simms said, "Watch out for Marvin Austin", because GIANTS LEGEND AT GIANTS PRACTICE SAYS EXCITING THING!!!
That's fine. You tell people to go fuck themselves over trivial disagreements like this, so you obviously have bigger problems.
really some of you guys, this is Mark Bavaro for god sake Â

Yeah, I'm sure Bavaro had no idea what he was talking about when he said, "The way the game is today, you need a big pass-catching tight end, a guy who can run like a wide receiver...That's the way the game is..." He added, "But for some reason they wouldn't get anybody."
Maybe you were one of the folks who swore up and down that the Giants would never draft a tight end in the 1st round, I don't know. But some of us were driving the Engram bandwagon long before the draft, and when the Giants do draft a TE in the 1st round, and it turns out to be the guy you really wanted, and the best TE the Giants ever had looks him over in the spring and says he's impressive, we feel like our faith has been justified, we take it for what it's worth, and we don't appreciate the naysayers who just have to open up with some "too cool for the room" BS about how Bavaro's opinion means very little because you heard him interviewed once.
I tell people to go fuck themselves when they act like douchebags, when they feel compelled, as TTH put it, "to piss in people's cheerios." Seems to me that someone who feels the need to do that is the one with the problems.
since the draft, based on what I've seen and read. To hear, probably our GOAT TE, say he's impressed, what the flock is not to like? Sure he hasn't had pads on yet for the Giants, but he looked pretty freaking impressive in them for Ole Miss. F*ck yeah I'm psyched!
Even if Mark Bavaro never actually saw him play even in OTAs, I still don't get the "Don't get too excited" fun police telling you to pump the brakes in July.
take the word of some anonymous mouthbreathing keyboard tough guy slob over one of the best TEs of all time when it comes to football. That's my choice and I'm sticking with it.
OTAs. Pffft. It's basically a bunch of guys playing catch in their backyard. Might as well have stayed home and posted on BBI.
With excellent hands. Plays TE. There's an easy way to use his skills. It's easy to see it will work in the NFL especially after watching him on a field with NFL players.
Bacardi mentioned there is a trend toward pass catching and more speed at TE. Then mentioned Giants haven't had one. He's right. Now we do and he likes what he sees.

People are going to have to decide whether or not OTA's are important, or if there's nothing to see here. If there's nothing to see here, then some people look like asses for getting their knickers in a bunch over OBJ missing OTA's.
before the regular season. That being said, this isn't John Gruden here, I don't recall Bavaro making a comment on a Giants player so for him to come out and say this means something to me. The fact that it's his position means more. Bavaro even says we have to wait and see what he looks like in pads but hard to not get a little excited about Engram with everything we area hearing.
Bavaro, to me, is a HOFer, albeit his career was cut short..He's one of the top 5 TEs I've ever seen..Seeing him in an Eagles' uni was painful..
That said, if his evaluation is based on following his College career, I sit up and take notice, though, until he steps foot on a professional field when they start playing for real, we won't quite know.
If his evaluation is based on pitch and catch, sorry, I'll take it with a grain pf salt. Again, many players have looked like the "real deal" during OTAs and minicamps and oft times display the requisite talent ("he has all the tools" mantra) during those workouts..
So to those who have asked, "what's the problem here," there is NO PROBLEM. We're simply taking a wait and see posture given how often we've been fooled by talent that didn't quite live up to the hype when the bullets started flying for REAL.
On paper, I'm extremely excited about what this kid could bring to our O..
the Giants have a "tight end" who, from an athleticism stand point, is on par with AJ Green, Julio Jones, Sammy Watkins, etc. - and in some cases, superior to those players.
we have every reason to be excited about his potential this year - especially at a position of "need".
if he's anywhere near hernandez/reed - he's more athletic than those "matchup nightmares" - this offense will be unstoppable.
these are good things.
i'd be shocked if engram isn't at least a solid receiving TE Â
he's got the chops and comes from a good football factory in ole miss. He fills a need and will get good to great coaching. Engram will at least be a solid contributing player here. If you believe the hype from Mara Tech he will be pretty damn good. They don't usually gush over young players unless it's legit.
don't get me started on BAvaro's HOF chances. Terrell Davis makes it but Bavaro doesn't???
Fuck Canton. Davis didn't have too short a career but Bavaro did...
Here's a trivia question:
Which two players were the best offensive players on a two time super bowl winning team. One of the two was labeled as THE BEST EVER by multiple reputable people. Both had careers cut short due to injury. The one that DIDN'T make Canton actually played longer. That same one literally re-defined the TE position.
Such horse shit. Bronco anti NY horse shit.
I am hopeful, but I'll reserve any comments until the pads go on Â
Lots of players look good before the hitting starts, at TE especially. Not only does he need to be able to catch and run, but he has to be able to hit, block, and be hit too.
I don't care what Bavaro or anyone else thinks at THIS POINT IN TIME
Looks to me like you have a misplaced problem here.
Seeing a TE move like Engram can be seen and evaluates without pads on. The game is moving more towards flag football. If Bavaro noticed a TE moving at a pace that impressed him I'd say that is worthy of at little fan excitement in July.

I know, I know, we are "gidiefor" the guy.....but can we see him play in pads first?

He's been around the team during the offseason work.

You're just way out of line at this point.
No, I'm not. The guy who posted the middle finger and then "GFY" because he encountered an opinion he didn't like is the one who's way out of line.
You've got to be kidding with your post.
Oh, you cut me to the quick...to the fast, even!
Dick.
