NFT: 10th Anniversary Trip Recommendations

aimrocky : 7/19/2017 12:54 pm
The wife and I are celebrating 10 years next spring and we're already kicking around ideas for a trip. Because we have two youngsters, we can only get away for a max of 4-5 days, so I'm really looking for no more than a 3-4 hour flight.

We're focusing in on the US Virgin Islands. We've done the Bahamas and didn't love it and visit Florida 1-2 times a year, so looking at something different. We're looking for something tropical where we can relax, drink, swim and eat well. Does anyone have good recommendations on great destinations, resorts, etc? I've been looking at St. Maarten's or St. Thomas, but my wife and I have never been so we're relying on online reviews.

Taking her, and my 4 year old, to Disney. My wife is beyond psyched.
I am partial to Iberostar Jamaica Grand (adults only)
Young Elijah : 7/19/2017 12:57 pm : link
after about 6 visits to the Carribean its still my favorite.

Excellence Playa Mujeres is a close second.

Check Booking.com, Bookit.com, Expedia.com, and cheapcarribean.com before confirming. There are always a few $100 off coupons and other resort cash floating around.

Good luck!
Oops! Thought you were leaving the kids- You cant do the Adults only
Young Elijah : 7/19/2017 12:58 pm : link
obviously but the Rose Hall i believe next door is as nice just with kid activities.

For Excellence, the Beloved is the sister resort with kids stuff.

Both still highly recommended.
I may be paranoid because of my poor experience with the Bahamas

Its nice, but more hectic with kids (going with my 2 boys).

No all inclusive, you feel a bit obligated to see Old San Juan, the rain forest, islands off the eastern coast etc. All which require taxis and stuff. Just something to consider as they are things I am dreading :)
I loved Aruba

My co-worker said the same about Aruba
aimrocky : 7/19/2017 1:16 pm : link
I'm afraid it's too far for only 4-5 days. You're essentially losing a day to travel. If I had more time, we'd probably opt for a week in Napa.

For 5 days Last year.
We rented a car and had a great time alot to see around the island. We did a day in San Juan and hiked the rain forest for a day.
We stayed at the El conquistador. They have a private island with great beaches and a ton of activities.
Good restaurants near by. We are planning to go back in February.

I don't remember Aruba being constantly windy.

I mean there's a sea breeze, but it wasn't like a desert sand storm. I like Aruba, but it sounds like a longer flight than aimrocky wants - it's close to 5 hours, but if he wants to bend on the flight time it's great I highly recommend it.

Fly to St. Maarten

then ferry over to Anguilla. Thank me later

Not cheap but don't know you're budget.
I would avoid St. Thomas.

Go to St. John and stay at the Westin. You will fly into St. Thomas and take a ferry over to St. John. It is a fantastic property with amenities that you expect from the Westin brand.

Also, you might want to consider St.Croix.

yupbjac27 : 7/19/2017 2:46 pm : link
but the wife and I went to Turks for our honeymoon and it was great. It's within the timeframe of a flight you are suggesting and it was a great trip!

We stayed at the Seven Stars (reasonable) and there were a couple really good dinner spots at night (Coco Bistro was my favorite). Also, we did a snorkeling trip that was super fun.
Have you considered the DR?
Section331 : 7/19/2017 2:51 pm : link
I've been to the La Romana area abunch of times, and really like it. I stayed at Casa de Campo and Iberostar Hacienda, and for the money, I preferred Hacienda. Casa is a little nicer, but not worth the fairly significant price difference. The food was better at Hacienda, as well.
if you do St Thomas
djm : 7/19/2017 3:13 pm : link
go to St John and try and stay there as long as you can. You can take a ferry from St Thomas. Thank me later. It's one of the best kept secrets of the Caribbean. Quaint little island with tons of places to eat and some of the most amazing beaches I have ever seen. St Thomas is nice too...but the resort we stayed at sort of forced you to eat very pricey food. Granted it was fantastic...still pricey and the island is a bit clumsy to navigate.

If and when we go back we are going to try and stay at St John the entire time. Even if it's insanely priced, it's worth it because you make up the cost with all the accessible food and liquor on the island---walking distance.

link with some QA on Thomas and John
djm : 7/19/2017 3:19 pm : link
if you want things easier so to speak, and want to stay at a beachfront resort then i'd say go to St Thomas. If you don't mind a little exploring or don't mind staying in the "town" (Cruz Bay) setting of St John --many beaches are within walking distance. And like I said there are dozens of pubs and cafes all over that island. Very good, very affordable. I can't wait to go back. Our ten year anniversary is coming up too. I really want to stay at St John for the entire trip.
Link - ( New Window )
also depends on what you are looking for
djm : 7/19/2017 3:21 pm : link
Aruba is predictable in a good and not so good way. It's safe. There are tons of places to eat, many withing walking distance but I found the island and beach experience to be a bit underwhelming. There is snorkeling but you have to find it.

For the money I think Aruba is a bit overrated. It's great but with a little planning and effort you can get more bang for your buck in the virgin islands.

We are Air BNB at a house for a week, on the west side of the island, with own private beach, pool and in a gated residence. We plan on renting a car to adventure all over the island, we want to go to the park and possibly do the hike, we also plan on making a bunch of meals at the house we have to cut costs a little, but any recommendations for food would be awesome. We plan on Snorkeling quite a bit, and just getting away to relax. Probably gonna go play some golf down there too! I truly can't wait.

djm : 7/19/2017 4:07 pm : link
sounds like you're going to get a lot more out of the island than we did. We stayed at a Marriott at some castle type setting. I wish I could remember more. There was a lot to do at our location. Probably a dozen or so places to eat, etc..shops out the ass. We ventured off the resort one or two days -and walked over some draw bridge into a local scene. It's a very unique island. The architecture will jump out at you instantly. That euro dutch look.

Enjoy!
Saint Lucia!!!
NYG27 : 7/19/2017 4:31 pm : link
Personally, some of these larger islands lost their charm and get over crowded at certain locations, which is the last thing you want to deal with while on vacation.

Which is exactly why I love Saint Lucia so much. By far the cleanest beaches, white sand beaches and crystal clear coast among all the main islands. Plus if you guys are into outdoor activities, there are a ton to do. From all the water activities, to exploring the rain forest, visiting and walking through the active volcano, zip lining and some of the best hiking trails in the Caribbean, then this island has it all.

Not sure what your price range is on a resort but if you can afford it, Marigot Bay Resort is stunning and worth the price. I've linked it below, check out the pictures.

If you want a more cost efficent place, I've also stayed at the Royal St Lucia Resort and loved it. I've linked it below, check out the pictures.

gtt350 : 7/19/2017 4:51 pm : link
your thought process. Ricks cafe at sunset, banana bread, Royal Jamacian cigars and coffee. Ganga is terrific, Reggae beautiful resorts especiaslly the all inclusives. Super clubs in Nigril, Couples in Ocho Rios no problem Mon
My two cents:
Crispino : 7/19/2017 5:22 pm : link
No to Jamaica. Doesn't feel safe when you leave your hotel grounds and the trinket sellers are brutal.

No to DR. Unfriendly people, serious problems communicating with hotel staff. Gorgeous beaches though.

No to Aruba. A huge snore. A desert island, not at all attractive. Oranjestad is over in 15 minutes and there nothing else on the island. And depending where you are, the wind can sandblast you right off the beach. Also no quality snorkeling as the water is murky. Wonderful people and food though.

Puerto Rico is nice, but the most Americanized of the islands. Has some nice historical sights.

Mexico would be my choice. Anywhere within reach of Playa Del Carmen, which is a fun town for shopping and people watching. Good restaurants too. Also, take the ferry to Cozumel for the best snorkeling in the Western Hemisphere. Lots of things to do off site from your hotel.

Good luck!

I recommend the St Regis Bahia Beach. Absolute paradise.

El Conquistador is nice but a bit dated.

As for Aruba, I like the Marriott properties down Palm Beach and away from the crowds and beach populated by tourists from dozens of hotels.

I would definitely pick St Thomas over St Maarten. I'd recommend an AirBnB by Megan's Bay. Beautiful beach.

If you choose St John's - another good call - I would look for AirBnB deals there to. I'm renting a house for two weeks there and I'm amazed at the price. It's friggin ridiculous.

Also, think about hurricane season and possibly getting off the hurricane belt. This is why Aruba is a great suggestion depending on the time of year. I love that island.

If you have specific questions about any of these places let me know.
For aruba you really want to be in the Palm beach area
bhill410 : 7/19/2017 7:30 pm : link
Which is essentially a 2-3 mile stretch of high rise resorts. I personally like the Hyatt but it can be slightly pricey at times. If memory serves correctly the rui is the all inclusive but you really don't want to limit yourself to the hotel food as there are a ton of good restaurants. As people have alluded to Aruba is fantastic if you just want to relax, be safe, enjoy the beach, and drink. However it's not as pretty as an island as some others. However for 4 days you likely may not have time for traditional sight seeing anyway.

DR and Jamaica are both a little sketchy for me. Caymons are nice but expensive. St Lucia great but expensive as is Turks. Bermuda you have to be mindful of time of year as it's not tropical. Costa Rica is fun but for only 4 days prob not worth it since it's a decent flight and then you have to fly to coast (or do a sketchy drive).

I like Rivera maya and my buddy was just talking about Tolume south of playa del carmon for the water huts if that's your thing.

Some great restaurants like El Gaucho, Fools and a Bull, Flying Fishbone, Que Pasa, Amuse, Barefoot, etc.

She and her boyfriend had a great time. Loved the resort, went on excursions, no hassles with the locals and the weather was great.

djm : 7/20/2017 9:51 am : link
granted I wouldn't go bar hopping in the local scene but I also don't think you need to avoid the local scene at all costs. Plus, you don't even NEED the local scene to enjoy the island.

I loved Jamaica but it was my first trip to the Caribbean. If you haven't to any of the islands or want to take a shorter and cheaper trip, Jamaica fits the bill. And the local resources are fantastic.

I actually have nothing but good things to say about the locals as well.
