what Buch went through last season kind of reminded me of Tarasenko's rookie year in St. Louis, minus the injuries that Buch had.
The talented Russian who put up really solid underlying numbers in limited minutes but wasn't fully trusted by the "old school" coach. Tarasenko was scratched for 5 of their 6 playoff games, unfathomable to think about now.
We need his offense next season. AV has to let him grow and live with the ups and downs Tarasenko - ( New Window )
I hope Buchnevich takes a step forward like Tarasenko Â
On a pretty big uptick in production from the talented Russian next year. You can see that the kid has all the skills in the world to make it happen. Now that he has that first season under his belt and a better understanding of the NHL game, I think we will see around 60 points from the guy. Call it 20+ in goals and 30+ assists.
will get every opportunity to thrive next season. Rangers don't really have much of a choice. HE will play.
I dont know how you can have such confidence given the yo-yo-ing AV often does with young players.
I have a hard time understanding how Vesey played over Buch when both were healthy.
You know the answer to that.
Vesey was far more advanced in terms of his two-way game than some people may have anticipated (me included). Plus he has more grit than Buchnevich on a team that could use soem grit.
Buchnevich for all the talent he has (and I'd be surprised if he gets close to Tarasenko) doesn't have the defensive zone side down yet.
Coaches like AV ARE NOT going to sacrifice defense for more offense/skill, they'd rather lose 2 - 1 because they can't score than take the risk of a defensive zone turnover, missed shift in coverage, etc. (at least that's generally their philosophy with forwards)
I'd personally put Buchnevich with Hayes if Buchnevich is going to get a regular shift. Hayes over-passes and Buchnevich overshoots, perfect pair.
I think pj has it exactly right. I'd only add that during the month or so that Vesey was a non-factor on the ice, his lows were on a par with Buch's, so there's that. This is not a defense of AV's allocation of PT @stillsteamedtheylet Clendowalk
Vesey was a non-factor for a lot longer than a month Â
Buch should see top-6 minutes before Vesey. I think Vesey has second-line upside and that tools are all there but he just needs some consistency. As of right now, I'd play Buch with Kreider and Zibanejad. The K-Z-B line. Vesey can be with his pal, Kevin Hayes on the third line.
Meanwhile, the Zibanejad arbitration hearing is scaring me a bit. The last time we had one was with Zherdev and we walked away.
And trade Holden for Bozak already!
RE: Vesey was a non-factor for a lot longer than a month Â
Yeah, he hit a wall early in 2017 and hit it hard. Hopefully just part of the adjustment process - but from a point production standpoint, you'd think the guy wasn't even playing at all for a few months.
that's the frustrating part about AV. He prefers the guy who looks good trapped in his own zone to the guy who causes us not to get trapped in our own zone. Especially if that ineffectiveness is "gritty".
Im still pissed about the criminal under-use of Yandle

I actually saw a very candid explanation from Claude Julien on this exact topic about Galchenyuk. And while I don't agree with it, I admired Julien's willingness to address it head on. Galchenyuk was a 21-year old 30 goal scorer, everyone expected him to be the next great star, but his development stifled and most blamed the coach (Therrien, but surprise surprise Julien agreed (they're the same f-ing guy), but anyway I appreciated his candor and I think this probably applies to Buchnevich too since AV is from the same Mario Tremblay school of coaching.)
Now this is different with Buch, since it was really just shifting Galchenyuk from C to W, vs in the stands, but same concept.

“Ideally, we would want him to play center. Ideally. But I think he realizes the same thing that we realize right now. Playing center is one of the toughest jobs there is. You have to be all over the ice. And you gotta be able to skate,” said Julien on Monday.
“Right now, he’s not at that stage. We have to put him in a position where he’s going to help himself and help the team, and right now the No. 1 center job … he wasn’t ready for it right now. It hurt him in his development and it hurt us as a team. He realizes that playing better away from the puck is what’s going to get him back playing center again. Wingers have less responsibilities. We’re going to take this step by step with him, and then maybe slide him back at center. It’s a decision he can make for us with his play.”
but he was a more effective player down the stretch and into the playoffs, and hopefully Vesey can build on that this year.
I still think we need one more high upside forward on this roster. Kovy sure would have been a good fit here. Right now we have 6 or so forwards you know will be effective - one of them goes down for a lengthy period of time and this offense will struggle big time.
And I'd also feel a lot better if Holden were traded (for a 3rd line forward). Right now we have 5 vet Dmen and Skjei - so guess who's never going to get an opportunity here... Graves, DeAngelo and Kampfer, that's who. Just like Clendo, just like Hunwick.
I think Kampfer is your perfect 7th, limited upside but wont kill you Dman... so that's fine. But October/November is exactly the time of year to give the other two a shot to contribute on your third pair.

I just figure there isn't as much veteran center/forward talent heading into 2017. Necessity just might negate any loyalty to veteran incumbents.
