NFT: Alien Covenant

djm : 7/20/2017 11:00 am
Once again....my initial thoughts after seeing this movie are I don't know what to think. My logic sensors in my brain signal wtf was that all about. My eyes and pleasure sensors say ohhh cool that looks really shiny...and then my logic sensor kicks back into gear and wants to kick a hole into the TV.

Why is Ridley Scott trying to reinvent the Alien universe while subsequently turning a SCI FI opus, teeming with all sorts of terror, nostalgia and potential into a jumbled mess of flawed logic and contradictions?

I don't even know where to begin with Covenant. It tries to be intelligent but just comes off as dumb, just like Prometheus. Fun to watch and never boring but so frustrating.

Am I wrong?
Well...

I watched Pro twice so I definitely didn't dislike it. It's shiny and pretty to look at and a genre I love but so damn flawed.

Both movies don't bore me but they are so ridiculous.
not wrong

They took the whole mythology and tried to make it look smarter but while doing so injected it with some of the stupidest most illogical decision making ever made. And then they contradicted the entire saga with new plot lines. Ridley Scott.... Thanks for the 70s and early 80s.
I haven't seen either
santacruzom : 7/20/2017 12:36 pm : link
But from what I understand, they explain that the aliens were essentially engineered as biological weapons, right?

If that's true, I'm not interested. Why can't they just have been fearsome creatures of origins unknown?

Next thing you know there will be Jaws prequels explaining how the shark came to be.

You're correct.

I could even live with that whole story line, as annoying as it might be, if they implemented something plausible. And yes it's annoying. They took imagination and fear and turned it into bullshit. Worse, they turned it into a flawed mess.
It was trash. Ridley Scott is just mad

people were looking forward to the potential Blompkamp Aliens sequel, so he had to regain control of the franchise and for some reason he felt like he needed to change a bunch of things unnecessarily.
It's like they doubled down on all the flaws
Motley Two : 7/20/2017 12:42 pm : link
from Prometheus. It was pretty shit.
Talk about milking a franchise
lugnut : 7/20/2017 12:46 pm : link
For about 2 days I was excited to go see Covenant, but then came to my senses. The first 2 Aliens were great, but then he had to go twisting and torturing things to get more use out of the franchise.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I expect his Blade Runner sequel to be shite too, for the same reasons. Trotting out a 75-y.o. Harrison Ford is going to be painful.
Scott isn't involved (?) with the new BR
djm : 7/20/2017 12:59 pm : link
How the hell are they going to sell everyone that Ford (Deckard) is a replicant? He's an old fuck. Replicants don't age.

UNless he wasn't one after all...I don't want to know. I have hopes for the new BR. The director working this one is quality.
Gotta admit I gave up after Prometheus
DieHard : 7/20/2017 1:41 pm : link
As for Blade Runner, Scott is a producer and claims it'll answer the question of whether Deckard is a replicant once and for all. Hope the director had the leeway to implement his own vision. I always thought Scott's belief that Deckard=replicant basically went against the point of the original movie.

makes a good (and funny) point. And if Deckard was a skin job, why the hell did he get his ass beat so much?

I thought so too. Personally I think deckard was initially intended to be human but the Ridley got cute and went along with the cult following theories. He just couldn't resist. I know the director's cut ending shows the other BR (olmos) leaving behind an origami unicorn which could lead one to believe deckard was a replicant...we'll see.
I liked Prometheus
NYerInMA : 7/20/2017 6:31 pm : link
if anything, I hated Covenant mostly because it abandoned the (interesting) Prometheus mythology in favor of an Alien: Resurrection-style orgy of gore and violence with no real plot.
They were both mediocre for the same reasons
mfsd : 7/20/2017 6:44 pm : link
Bunch of non-descript, unmemorable morons as characters

Think about Alien and Aliens - several characters were memorable, and you could feel an attachment to them as they faced horror and death

With both Prometheus and Covenant, I found myself basically rooting for all those dummies to die horribly

On that front, at least both movies delivered

Exactly. When I saw that Danny McBride was in convenant i figured great he's gonna provide that comic relief and realism that aliens had. Instead, they could have used anyone for Danny's role. I don't think he had one funny line or moment in the entire movie.

Your line about tries to be intelligent but just comes across as dumb sums both movies up perfectly
loved prometheus

didn't care for covenant. The weak characters in covenant made the movie particularly hard to get into - which I never did.
