NFT: Elon Musk Claims Approval to Build NYC-DC Hyper Loop

Mike from SI : 7/20/2017 3:13 pm
While this would be awesome, I'm not sure Mr. Musk appreciates that whatever "verbal govt approval" he might have gotten probably doesn't include the multiple state governments involved, local governments, environmental review processes, private lawsuits, etc. I hope he's successful, but I can see this thing getting bogged down in red tape forever. At least the lawyers and lobbyists will get paid?

Maybe he got it in writing

you know, a tweet.
He may be a genius, but you need to be half-lunatic

To navigate metro area red tape and politics to actually built major projects like that.
HE can just buy

Amtrak and improve on it
Government approval?
njm : 7/20/2017 3:33 pm : link
He'll need a binder as thick as the Manhattan White Pages to hold all the government approvals he needs between Manhattan and DC.
Everyone should be rightfully skeptical of this statement
Ben in Tampa : 7/20/2017 3:45 pm : link
but damn do I hope I'm alive when the hyper trains actually revolutionize transportation in this country.

There are major projects underway in Florida, but sadly Tampa is a phase 2 location. (Orlando/Miami) The issue, as it was explained to me by gov't official, is that these are really real estate plays for these private companies. The trains are loss leaders, they want the riders to stay and spend money on the land they own around the stations.

Unfortunately in Tampa there isn't any prime real estate where this model would work.
Is he still building
Pete in 'Vliet : 7/20/2017 4:01 pm : link
the hyperloop in California first? It seems like Elon's plate is pretty full these days. It would be nice to see one of these future project finished instead of adding on more.

So far he has:
Solar Roof panels
Tesla 3 ready to be revealed
Self-Driving car research continuing
Space X getting closer to mmanned flights
and now Boring Company's high speed rails on both coasts.

Did I miss anything?

He got a verbal?
Section331 : 7/20/2017 4:10 pm : link
From whom? I've dealt with gov agencies before, and I've never heard of getting a verbal from anyone. I like Elon, but I'm calling BS on this one.

And yes, even if it gets approval, it will be mired in the courts for years. Unfortunately so.
Elon Musk claims a lot of things

Well, he got the electric car thing.....
Crispino : 7/20/2017 8:07 pm : link
going and he should concentrate on seeing that through. Once they figure out a way to make the batteries more practical, the gasoline engine will become a thing of the past. The world will be better for it.

His cars aren't exactly environmentally friendly by any stretch of the imagination.
This is a big deal for some of the richest folks in these states
AJ23 : 7/20/2017 9:00 pm : link
all supporting it. And you can bet your ass government officials would love to put their name behind a project like this.

The key, as it often tends to be, is in the funding.
I claim that I am ruler of the world!
Victor in CT : 7/21/2017 8:30 am : link
What is amazing is that this is getting so much play and some people actually believe it. Which "gov't"? Federal? Any of the 4 states and the D of C that it has to pass through? What does verbal approval mean? It's more likely that this will take 29 years to approve than we see a 29 minute trip from NYC to DC.

And can this charlatan run a profitable business without massive taxpayer subsidies?

And then a politician will win cheap political points by cancelling it years down the road. People love short-money MFers.

There you go.
I saw the story on this last night
jnoble : 7/21/2017 6:30 pm : link
and saw the animation of what it would look like, zooming down a track like a possessed slot car at a zillion MPH.

Not to be the turd in the punchbowl but I'd be extremely wary of getting on that overgrown amusement park thrill ride until it was tested repeatedly. I cant imagine the death toll if one of those things jumped the track somehow in the tunnel at full speed

Such as?

1. I-66 adding a lane inside the beltway
2. I-66 expansion from the beltway to Gainesville, then Haymarket
3. 'Trying to get a 4th lane on I-95 from 123 to Quanico
4. Extending I-95 express lanes to exit 126
5. Adding lanes to the I-95 bridge from Stafford to Fredericksburg
6. Extending I-395 HOT lanes to D.C.
7. Expanding Route 28 from Route 7 to Manassas
8. Making Route 7 signal free from Route 28 to the Leesburg bypass
9. Trying to get Route 28/FFX CO Pkwy to connect to the ICC in Maryland
....and more
hmmm

of course they are

A recent study of electricity generation concluded that the average electric car in the US now gets the equivalent efficiency of a non-existent 73 mpg gas-powered vehicle after accounting for emission from electricity production.

and all tesla super chargers will soon be off the gird ... solar panels and batteries ..

The TRB just approved and it added it to the plan Wednesday evening.

Virginia has been trying to do this off and on for decades. Maryland won't agree to any bridge between the Beltway and Point of Rocks (Route 15 north of Leesburg).

Their stated reason is that it would impact an agricultural preserve. I suspect it's more about not wanting to make it easier for its residents to cross the river. In particulsr, they don't want to make Dulles easy to get to for western Marylanders (vs BWI), and they don't want to make it easy for Marylanders to get to Virginia jobs.

That's exactly it, which is very short sighted.
I hope they are able to pull through in the 21st century.
