Remember Shockey's catch and run in the preseason HOF game..

jnoble : 7/21/2017 5:51 pm
..his rookie year when he took off and obliterated someone on the Texans, just ran him over like a truck by the sidelines? Does anyone have that GIF or a link to it? Can't find it at all on Youtube, only his other highlight from that year from the late season Colts game. Thanks. I hope Evan E can do the same for us this year!
Enjoy.

I wouldn't say he had a bad career by any stretch but what could have been? You don't see many guys with his size, speed, mentality, toughness anymore.

. Man, I thought he was going to be an all time great. Weird, but his 02 season was his best year.

I know he had maturity issues but his nonstop injuries plus Coughin's offense did him no favors. Say what you will about Fassel, but his O-game plan used Shockey's abilitys more than Coughlins most of the time which was to stay in to block more than being run out to catch like an extra WR. I think he resented that.
I feel like we shortened his career
widmerseyebrow : 7/21/2017 6:25 pm : link
bulking him up and making him a two way tight end. In today's NFL I think teams keep him at 250 and minimize his inline blocking.

That's all said not taking into account his personality and lack of chemistry with Eli. Just thought his offseason training was odd for a few years there.
I didn't know until sort of recently
jnoble : 7/21/2017 6:32 pm : link
..that allegedly he asked to come back to the Giants after getting cut by the Panthers and was told a firm NO. Thats what happens when you get into a shouting match with the GM and demand to be traded, you burn that bridge forever.
I didn't know
jnoble : 7/21/2017 6:33 pm : link
that pass was from Jesse Palmer. He was a quick footnote in Giants history
now just imagine if...
jnoble : 7/21/2017 6:36 pm : link
..that was Larry Donnell instead of Shockey. Here's how that wouldve played out:
Catch
Trip
Flip
Fumble

6 points going the other way *face palm*
From my memory

Shockey liked blocking. I remember his issue with the Giants was that he said on any given play he can have up to 10 reads AFTER the ball was snapped. It took away from his playmaking ability. This was a Gilbride offense issue. It has been discussed a ton. When Gilbride's offense was clicking it was near impossible to stop. The problem was that it was off more than it was on. Plus you needed a great OL for that to occur. I also remember that we almost never had any yards after the catch in that offense for awhile. So, I am not going to criticize the offense because we won 2 super bowls with it but I also understand the downfalls of it (2008 when we couldn't adjust for Plaxico going down and thinking Hixon was going to replicate what Plax could do).
He was the Babe Ruth of pro football ...

Gave no quarter, expected none. Never seen one player get more helmets ripped off his head. At 250-260, he could out-run most 180-190 pound defensive backs, he was amazing.

Gilbride's offense was definitely a mismatch. To his credit, Shockey did like blocking and trained to fit in to the Gilbride tight end role as best he could: be a big time blocker and settle into an open zone over the middle when called upon. The former contributed to him being injury prone imo.

Just not a good fit at all for a big guy who could run like that.

I don't buy Coughlin's offense as a thing that slowed Shockey down. 2005 represented his second-best year in terms of catches and yardage, plus his best year in terms of yards per catch and touchdowns. He had more than 100 targets in 2005 and 2006, plus another 93 in 2007 before he got injured.

I think the big thing that derailed Shockey's career was his knee injury in 2003 plus his general pig-headedness. I'm not saying Coughlin's offense used him better than Fassel's did, but there wasn't really an appreciable dropoff like people often claim.
I do remember that game

I also remember that rookie David Carr actually looked pretty good in his brief outing too.
wasn't that also the game

Didn't Plax say that at least 2 of the INTs in Eli's famous crap-fest against the Vikings was because Shockey missed a read?
Shockey Moment
Tark10 : 7/21/2017 10:04 pm : link
The one catch that stands out in my mind was against the Colts. He took a flat pass on the left side and just blew colts DB's out of their shoes. I remember Strahan jumping up and down on the sidelines. A magic moment.

years after the injuries caught up, what a difference.

He had legitimate injuries, but he also did not take care of himself well off the field. He could have been better than Jason Witten.
Was watching the game with a friend who hated picking him

When he ran that guy over I yelled, "that's why you pick a tight end in the first round!"

was one of those rare finds....

I remember splitting him out as a wide receiver....remember the catch against the Eagles?

But the chemistry between him and Eli was not there.....was it the "tree routes" or something else?

I agree he could have been something special, if he took better care of himself, especially in the off season....

I don't think the Giants were the right team for him....he had an Oakland Raider mentality...

The one play though, that really haunts me, is that dropped td against SF in the playoffs....would have put that game away.....

Unfortunately for him, he was injured during the SB run....

Can you imagine this offense in 2007, if Tiki played one more year, and Shockey stayed healthy? the thing is, maybe we don't make it to the SB if that happened.....maybe their omission from the team was for the good of the team....
one of my favorite

all time giants ...

I recall this game quite well - I believe the DB he leveled referred to Shockey as "overrated" prior to the game.

It is my personal opinion we do not make that run if either player is on the team, healthy and in uniform.

Eli became a leader on offense and was able to spread the ball around with the two of them gone.
Remember when Boss caught that big pass from Eli

Is when, on an INT vs Washington, he complained to the official about holding while the D.C. LB took it in for a pick 6. December 2005.
