But I think he's right about Wayne Gallman. The rookie will be battling it out with Orleans Darkwa for the #2 RB spot (and I think he'll win). And, in the future, I could see him taking the #1 spot from Perkins. Nothing against Perkins...I just think Gallman is a more complete back.

It's hard for me to envision a scenario in 2017 that Perkins and Vereen are not 1a and 1b (barring injury).

I see Vereen as the change-of-pace back. As RV wrote, " ...the third-down/two-minute back..." I see Gallman as Perkins' principal back-up, the guy that gives him a breather every once in a while (and most likely a short-yardage specialist, too).
Perkins and Vereen will get the Majority or RB snaps
ZogZerg : 7/22/2017 11:14 am : link
Gallman will backup and Darkwa is fighting for a spot. Even if Darkwa holds on to #4 and they keep 4 RBs, I don't see him getting many carries.

Of course injuries will impact all of this.
How is Perkins not a complete back
robbieballs2003 : 7/22/2017 11:20 am : link
He has great vision, great quickness, can catch, and can block. He did excellent as a rookie in pass protection. He had some early mistakes but not only did he know his assignments but his execution was pretty good.

If you want to say there are questions about Perkins being able to handle the full workload over a 16 game season I cannot argue that. Saying Gallman is a more complete back when we haven't even seen him play against NFL competition is a stretch to me.
Here is one against Cleveland

Maybe so, robbie.
Klaatu : 7/22/2017 11:28 am : link
And maybe my assessment of Perkins is colored by the fact that I thought the Giants made a huge mistake drafting him instead of Jordan Howard (although with Howard's injury history, I can understand why they did). However, it's not like I think Perkins will be bad...on the contrary, I've argued that he's more than capable of being a featured back. I'm just higher on Gallman than most here probably are - I prefer the more powerful runner.

Understandable. Gallman became more of a complete back last year but, imo, I wouldn't say he is a more complete back. Gallman will have a role soon enough. Imo, that role will be very dependent on Perkins. If Perkins is getting the job done then Gallman's role can only grow so much. If Perkins is not then Gallman will have more of an opportunity.

Also, again imo, we need a RB like Perkins. He fits so much better with our current OL. When you watch some of Perkins' runs you understand that great vision and quickness are must if we are going to get anything out of our running game. Gallman isn't as elusive amd doesn't have the burst that Perkins has. Remember when Jacobs was a beast? He had a great OL. When that OL started to deteriorate so did Jacobs' game. Even in short yardage later in his career tge power aspect meant little since he couldn't get going. The great thing about Perkins is that he can get going in short areas. Add in his vision and it just makes too much sense. Hopefully our OL improves in the run game so we won't have to see our running backs making insane moves just to get back to the line of scrimmage.

Final note is this:

Quote:
But PFF also states that in 31 snaps as a pass blocker last season, Perkins allowed only one quarterback pressure.

I look at it this way, flawed as it may be --- gallman was a fourth round pick in a deeper rb draft. Perkins was a 5th round pick in a not so deep rb draft. If you go by the consensus, gallman was a better rb prospect than Perkins if only by a slight margin. Regardless, gallman comes here with even higher expectations than Perkins. What Perkins has on gallman is experience and he actually showed he can play NFL football.
