Family plus dog heading up to New Hampshire and Maine for vacation. Looking for a midway point in MA or RI to stay for a day or two. Preferably with a non beach activity as we are doing that in Maine. Appreciate any recommendations, TIA
allow pets, for an additional fee. With just a couple days most house rentals are out since they have weekly minimums.
I'd look into Newport, RI, Narragansett, RI (not as much to do as Newport, but vastly underrated coastal town, with better beaches than Newport - even though I know you said you're not interested in the beach) or somewhere on the North Shore of MA, like Gloucester, MA, Newburyport, MA, Rockport, MA (if you like art, this is the place to go), even Ipswich, MA.
In Newport, RI I was just there with my dog a couple weekends ago and you can do the cliff walk with your dog, or just basically walk around the wharfs, shop, people watch, etc. and at least a couple places allow dogs in their outdoor seating area (we ate at a restaurant called the Landing, not my favorite Newport spot - since there are so many great restaurants, but they allow dogs, so there's that) - and the food is good, just not Newport good.
We took our two border collies (medium sized dogs).
You can walk down to the gorge and the dogs had a blast playing in the water.
We stayed at the Quality Inn, and somehow (I don't remember how), we got this massive room on the ground floor, big enough that the dogs were chasing each other in big circles. Solid floor, so noone could hear.
We left the dogs in the room, had dinner at the Simon Pearce Restaurant. Superb.
midway between. I would look into PJ's suggestion of the northeastern show of CT, or maybe Sturbridge MA. You can find pet friendly hotels at www.officialpethotels.com.

A little further away, you can go to Kennebunkport, ME, a quaint town (You've probably seen video of this town because G Bush Sr has a house there)
Further north, you can go to the LL Bean flagship store in Freeport, Maine.
Or further south, you can go to Boston
