been good anyway. No control and the opposite of durable.
I guess the next step for him is the pen. Hopefully he can miss more bats working as a reliever and maybe focusing on only 2 pitches can lower his bb issued a bit.
Assuming he isn't extended. Thor, Degrom, and Darvish would be a great trio. Wheeler and Harvey obviously can't be counted on but Wheeler could be a dynamic reliever.
Think Wheeler ends up in the pen were he's fine but due to command not as good as people would think, Harvey is a decent back end arm for 2-3 years and then floats around the league as a "what if?". I wouldn't be on Matz but incredibly might have the best odds of being someone you want starting future playoff game
Mets calling it a "Stress Reaction" which is a precursor to an actual fracture. Still laughable and changes nothing.
You're making that up.
Huh? No Im not. That's what the Mets are calling it... lol.
A stress fracture is an actual break in the bone that has occurred usually due to repeated stress to a specific area such as running but can also occur from small trauma as well. An increase in mileage, poor fitness, poor diet, prior stress fracture, and menstrual irregularity in women can all put someone at risk for a stress fracture.
Often a stress fracture is diagnosed with a history from the physician and a physical exam in addition to using an x-ray, bone scan, CT scan or MRI. It can be tricky to diagnose at first and can take up to almost two weeks to see on a x-ray and for this reason if there is a high suspicion often a provider will choose another test to help with the diagnosis. A bone scan is great for seeing injuries to an area in the bone and a special dye is taken up in the area where the injury is located. It can be positive with other disease processes as well so a CT scan can be used to look at bone specifically if the bone scan does not given the appropriate information. A MRI can look at other structures as well as bone and can see breaks in bone but also looks at soft tissue and can see surrounding swelling.
A stress reaction is commonly seen as well with runners and triathletes. It is a reaction that the soft tissue and bone can demonstrate prior to an actual fracture being seen. It is often diagnosed using the same history and exam from the physician in addition to imaging. It has the same risk factors as well and is often seen on MRI and not x-ray. The MRI will show edema or swelling in the bone but no actual fracture in addition to inflammation in the surrounding tissue.
Mets have a ton of injuries this year... it's laughable...
But the rotation hasn't gone up in smoke yet. Matz is just going through something (similar to deGrom earlier this year). He'll figure it out and come out of whatever funk he's in. Thor's coming back. That's 3 pretty damn good pitchers still.
Lugo, Montero, Gsellman, ect. should be enough to fill out the back end even if Wheeler and Harvey never pitch again.
That said, I double down and go in on Darvish in the offseason or maybe trade for a TOR starter.
The New York Mets announced Monday that they have signed RHP Jonathan Albaladejo to a minor league deal.
Albaladejo, 34, pitched in the Major Leagues from 2007-2010 and 2012 for the Nationals, Yankees and Diamondbacks. In 66 career appearances he has thrown 76.2 innings, striking out 56 and walking 32. He has a career 1.422 WHIP, 4.34 ERA and 4.89 FIP.
Pitching for the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League this season, he won seven games pitching to a 4.44 ERA with 103 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings.
He had a strong 2016 campaign during which he went 15-6 with a 4.06 ERA in 172.2 innings. He was teammates with former Met favorite Endy Chavez who hit .345 in 95 games for Bridgeport in 2016.
86 innings are deceiving because he throws so many pitches per inning.
Sounds like they just overworked him coming off two years of not pitching. That's what happens when you have a manager and GM in the final year of their contracts. They are thinking more about this year than the future. Wheeler actually had a pretty good string of starts. Sounds like he just hit a wall physically.
I do not think this necessarily means he has to go to the pen. He just needs some rest. Might be a blessing in disguise.
I'm actually surprised Blevins has held up as well as he has, considering his load.
Of all the pitchers, Wheeler and Matz were the ones I was most likely
with the Mets, Cubs & Astros, it is a proven fact that you need to build around young offense because pitching is a complete crap shoot.
You need both. The mets had half the equation solved, and failed to follow up on getting the offense required to justify the pitching. I still say they should sell off what they can and try to get some young, athletic prospects.
But I think some of this DL stint is related to trying to manage Wheelers innings and jumping on any potential DL offering.
I know I am dumb and I still want them to trade off reed, Duda and grandy - but part of me still feels like we could make it semi interesting (think get within 4/5 games of second wild card by late August) if Harvey and Thor come back at all effective before September.
Rosario and Smith could come up and our 4 starting OF alignment can go to 3 and we might not miss much of a beat in terms of the lineup. Addison Reed will be the killer. Not going to have much of a shot without him. Probably the one guy I hope we can hold onto unless he brings back a ransom.
But part of me still feels like we could make it semi interesting (think get within 4/5 games of second wild card by late August) if Harvey and Thor come back at all effective before
We all know the odds of actually making the playoffs are very slim but If they can go on a little run then baseball in August will keep the attention. Of those of us willing to buy into what will probably turn out to be an illusion
But I don't want baseball to be over for me as a fan at the end of July. All of us Mets fans have endured too many seasons like that
Of Bruce - conforto - cespedes with lagaras in against lefties and Bruce occasionally moving to first? Resign reed, sign Cobb and add moustakas and who knows maybe rebuild is faster than anticipated. Cain is probably a better fit but I have to think Bruce will be a lot cheaper. Thor - degrom - Cobb - Harvey - Matz with Lugo & Montero starting in pen until first injury(s) to starters.
Agreed. Sadly, there's no DH in the NL and we already have two corner OFs. I'd rather allocate resources elsewhere. Also, the fact that just about every other GM keeps passing on this guy makes me even more skeptical about his skillset going forward. He really has to repeat his production from this year (basically a career year) to really be useful.
same as BHill in that I don't want baseball to be over already. I understand the playoffs are a long shot, but I'd still like to see the team win games down the stretch. Reed would be the biggest loss but maybe Rosario and Smith and replicate Duda and Cabrera's production (like Z said).
.379 babip won't carry over to MLB. Either way though, if the Mets don't want to extend Duda, Smith needs MLB ABs. He's been a guy that's often struggled a bit each time he was promoted, but after getting enough ABs, turned it around. Would be nice to get some 200 or so MLB ABs in 2017.
I guess the next step for him is the pen. Hopefully he can miss more bats working as a reliever and maybe focusing on only 2 pitches can lower his bb issued a bit.
Cervical Disc, Collapsed Lung, Arterial Clot....
Snakebit.
When is Gsellman coming back? We finally get another look at Tyler Pill.
You're making that up.
fuckin jinx
He is getting the last laugh

No sense rushing any of these guys back. Pitch Montero, Pill, Lugo, Degrom, and Matz (if he holds up....)

Sorry, lame joke attempt. See my 5:13pm post.
he's 3 for 3 tonight with his 15th homer (batting .338)
not bad for a fat/lazy bastid!

They need to just get him already. Deal Duda and be done with it.
which means he will promptly get bombed.

Wow I suck. Twice in the same thread completely missed it. lol
Im surprised Pill doesn't get another start

Anyway excited to see flexon instead of Pill.
Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good

that the Mets are calling up Flexen?? Pretty crazy. He will be starting in place of Wheeler.

Pill is not a major league talent

not bad but .325 is the Mendoza line in the PCL
